Aviles?? You mean the .317/.340/.436 hitter for BOS last year? Hmm.. I'll take that black hole at SS any day.

Platoon.

vs LHP .318 .348 .576

vs RHP .229 .263 .338

But it's somehow more valid to use his splits while he was playing with the Royals rather than using the splits while he was playing at Fenway, which is where he will play this year?

Smart, using his PAs with the Sox last year to predict his future perfomance rather than the rest of his career stats.

Plus Aviles is not a true SS. I bet that by the end of the season both Punto and Iglesias combine to have more starts at SS than Aviles.

Because his .737 career OPS is so bad?

His career 98 OPS+ is better than Jeter's OPS+ over the past 2 seasons, both individually (97 and 90) and aggregately (93).

How do you plan on dealing with your black hole at SS. The one that costs $17mm a year.

He's never had over 500 PAs over a full season. His OPS looks 'good' because his numbers are inflated by high BABIPs on his rookie year and 2010. He's streaky but will regress badly over the course of a full season. He is not a SS. He's like Freddie Sanchez lite.

Wow. That's laughable.

Discounting 1,300 PA because he has had a career OPS+ higher than Jeter's over the past 2 years.

And then you talk about a high BABIP?!?!

Hahahaha. That's hilarious dude.

JETER HAS A f***ING CAREER BABIP OF .355!!!!! THE HIGHEST AVILES HAS EVER HAD WAS .357!!!!!

Posted

Lmfao, Jeter has shown over his HALL OF FAME CAREER that he can sustain such a high BABIP without regressing his production.

The fact that you're comparing Aviles to Jeter makes me lose faith on this forums again. Idiot.

Well, Benny has some balls after all. Now go get Oswalt. And give Aviles and the kid Iglesias some PT.

Trading Lowrie earlier, you figure their thinking is changing on the fly.

The fact that you call Aviles a "black hole at SS" when he has a higher OPS+ over the past 2 seasons than Jeter makes me lose all faith on Yankees fans being logical.

Or they were waiting for Oswalt's price to drop to this range all along, and figured that Scutaro would be an easier way to shed payroll than Youkilis, their only RH power threat.

It makes sense.

Aviles at SS will hurt the teams defense IMO.

Probably.

I'm still all in for having Iglesias play SS every day. Let him win a gold glove and just hide his bat in the line up.

Posted

The problem is, that right now, they can't hide his bat in the lineup.

They can do it when the lineup is at full strength, but it would be a problem to start the season.

Tomorrow I will pour some out for that POS.

If this was just a salary dump, seems like a waste. If the owners were so worried about the luxury tax, maybe they should stop bringing in over priced players like CC and Lackey.

This ownership group has lots of money. Penny pinching is f'n stupid. I don't want Aviles at SS. That'll be ugly.

Hard to hide s bat in a lineup where the RF/LF is TBD.

Well that's fine, because we don't need to hide Aviles's bat.

So make Aviles the starting SS until Crawford comes back. Then you make Aviles and Sweeney a platoon in RF, and have Iglesias as the starting SS by mid April.

I'm actually thinking Crawford will be back for Opening day, but that's just my opinion.

I dunno about that. Wrist injuries are always very complicated. I'd say late April as the best-case scenario.

Some money has been freed up and the talk is that we are now going to get Roy Oswalt and maybe a platoon RH hitting OF. May I just ask you to remember who our GM is and some of the major mistakes he has made so far this off season. One, offering Ortiz arbitration when everyone but Cherington knew he would accept it. That killed our chances of getting the pitching we needed at the time. Two, this is the guy who invited Varitek to ST as a non-roster player. Can you imagine if he accepts that and shows up with that ridiculous "C" on his shirt and starts politicing with the pitchers who want to have him catch them? It could happen and it could happen that the money freed up could go towards Papi's two year contract which would be a freakin' disaster.

I hope this does not happen, I hope we get Oswalt and a RH hitting outfielder but nothing is certain at this time. Cherington will come in for a lot of praise if he can pull this off, but if he falls on his face and we don't get those items we need there is going to be a lot of people here and e lsewhere all over Benny like a cheap suit. We all have to stay tuned in the next few days and keep our fingers crossed.

A) The whole "Everyone but Cherington knew he would accept" line is ridiculous.

B ) It has been publicly denied several times that the Red Sox offered Varitek or Wakefield any type of contract. Including your beloved Bobby V.

Really bro. Stop it.

I am not pleased with this deal. I like Aviles as a SS, and his stats seem to indicate that SS is his best defensive position.... but then who plays LF? The bench, and bench depth are very weak, and Iggy will not be ready until 2013.

They traded Yamaico Navarro for junk last year, and traded Lowrie and Scutaro this offseason. Is there a plan at SS? Unless Ben has some masterplan here, I have a hard time defending the Ortiz move now. Seriously, what were they thinking here?
