I'm actually getting a kick out of Youk getting a dose of his own medicine...

Youk went out of his way to bash Ellsbury's commitment when he was hurting....now Youk is on the receiving end...maybe within the framework of clubhouse protocol, BV was serving up a little payback...

So the solution to an event that happened two years ago (mind you, Youk got his from the media), is creating controversy for the team after last year's collapse and a lackluster start?

Solid strategy.

Good point, Youkilis hitting .176 is totally what the team is paying him for.

Funny how when Youkilis calls out Ellsbury in the media no one cares. But when Bobby Valentine calls out Youkilis in the media, "it's now how we do things around here".

I hate to say it but for many of us Youklis is playing up to our expectations. Many wanted him traded over the winter. Now he is untradeable. He will improve. He won't continue to hit .176 but his best days are behind him. The things that are the most troubling about Youklis is that he has lost the strike zone and his defense is declining.

Back-patting extraordinaire on the seasonal benchmark known as April 18.

Kevin Youkilis stats from July 1, 2011 to end of season:

BA: .240

OPS: .764

Thats about where I expect him to finish this season. Not as bad as he has been, but nowhere near his career numbers. I think he is working as hard as he can, but he is losing his skills. Too bad...I feel sorry for the guy.

Exactly what I said over the winter. What is also clear is that he looks very mediocre in the field. I said that I didn't think he'll play a 100 games this year. I'll be very surprised if heis starting at 3rd after the ASB.

That's where you expect him to be, but you have no logical argument to back up the idea that that's where he will end up necessarily. It's not a big sample size, and he could simply be in a slump or pressing.

The truth is, none of us knows, and proclaiming to know is disingenuous.

I'm not judging the merits of the "strategy", or even that it IS one, I'm just speculating that Youk's Ells-bashing might be a factor behind BV's comments...

The point is that it's not helping the team in any way, and the team is what's important, right?

(For the record, Youkilis does have it coming)

Tito reminds me of a captain who allowed his ship to sail away from him.

Bobby V reminds me of a captain who is throwing his crew off the ship.

It's possible Bobby isn't happy about some things. Just possible.

I made no pretense about "knowing" anything. How any player will finish the year is all guesswork. I was just presenting his history since last July-a fairly LARGE sample size involving nearly 200 PAs last year alone. The only indicator that gives us any framework to estimate how a player will perform is his recent history, so I looked that up. Its not a pretty sight.

200 PA's is not a "fairly large" sample size. It's less than a third of a regular season. Even worse, a large part of your sample size comes from a period of time where he had a serious injury. It's disingenuous to lump those AB's with this year's, when he is much healthier.

That is a huge sample for Youklis considering given his injury track record I'd be stunned if he has 400 ABs this year.

This is how fights begin! While some talk about baseball some insult...

I have what his name on ignore because nothing he ever posts is worth reading or fighting about. So I have no idea what he posts in anycase.:D

Iortiz, if you don't know what something means, find out first before making those asinine comments. Now you give the big blowhard a chance to take a shot at me, and so it begins.

A strawman is not an insult. A strawman is saying that someone fabricated an easy-to-counter argument that was not presented by anyone, or does not fit the topic of discussion.

It's impossible to have a discussion when someone takes the position that you must either agree with them or you are "devoid of all logic".

Same when someone creates your points for you. But nice talking to you.

There's no need to call somebody strawman, idiot, stupid, etc. pumpsie has been pointed to be negative or pessimist but he always talk about baseball.

Anyway... Back to topic IMO Kevin seems in a good shape but probably his problem is in his head. We'll see.

BTW Youk homers

I've known Pumpsie on these boards for 8 years. His negativity is merely his way of dealing with the disappointment that is inherent in being a Red Sox fan of our generation. We used to say they killed my father and my grandfather and now they are coming for me. Most pre 67 Red Sox fans are this way including me.

I have noticed that some posters do not like when you call them "strawman" over and over again, and I have noticed that you use a lot that word and when you do it, they pissed off, but if you want keep doing it, be my guest but probably you will find wars where not even exist.

You don't call a person a "strawman". You call their argument a "strawman". They don't like it because it invalidates their argument, so it proceeds to defend it.

I didn't see you jumping to my defense when someone called my argument a strawman.

I would have thought that for many of the pre 67 fans, finally winning it all would have dispelled a lot of the negativity.

I have agreed and disagreed with him a lot of times and I think he is a great guy and have a good knowladge about the game.

It is very hard to change habits of one's youth. Besides fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me. It is that way with the Red Sox. That's why we love them:D

What a bunch of s***.

I don't understand what a strawman is and I certainly do not care either.

But I tend to agree with most if not all of what user has said ON TOPIC.
