It's already in gear. How long before he really blows it up?

Actually I did not catch all of the comments but the one I heard was "I hate the Yankees". I don't have any problem with that one.

I would love for the Sox to go into Yankees games believing that their manager had cut a check that they had to make good. Maybe they need to feel like their opponents want to hand them their heads. That might help keep them honest which with few exceptions they have not been of late.

Do you think he said that just for the sake of saying it because its the Red Sox or do you all think he meant it. It would mean more if he truly meant it.

In 2003 when he first announced he'd waive his 'no trade' to get out of AZ, Curt Schilling made it clear he would only accept a trade to two teams: the Yankees and the Phillies. When asked if he'd consider Boston Schilling said 'no,' calling the Sox the biggest loser organization in MLB, and a piece of s*** team.

Less than a month later Curt was seated at the table at Fenway saying "I hate the Yankees."

Who gives a flying f*** what he says? He's a baby-sitter. Baseball is mostly about the players getting it done, not like the head coach in football.

Bobby V getting hired is boring. How about the Sox do something significant, like Angles w/Pujols.

I kinda like it! It puts a spark into Sox fans and players! I'll be really interested to see how Beckett and him get along!

You and me both. The way things are shaping up it might be the most exciting action we see all season.

This season could get nastier than a Bad Girls Club marathon. I really hope the hiring works out perfectly and the ship is righted. However, if players step out of line, this could be a very entertaining 81-81 team off the field.

Anyone else listen to the Bobby Valentine interviews in last few days? One thing I've noticed already is that he comes across as either a huge exagerator, or a perpetual liar. Is there anything he says that doesn't come with a story filled with BS?

Did you hear the three envelope rag he pulled in his interview with Tito? It would be one thing if his stories carried greater moral or perspectival value, but so far it sounds like he thinks the fans he is talking to are really stupid and uninformed.

Just an initial take. He's interesting but not much of a straight shooter as far as I can tell.

V loves the sound of his own voice. He always has. This is just an observation over time but it does seem to me that when somebody loves the sound of his own voice to that extent he cannot help but to "embellish" because he just wants to keep hearing the melody of his own voice in his head.

V is going to be pretty tough to take around here I suspect. It is almost impossible to avoid adversity here and if you SOP in those instances tends to involve opening mouth and inserting foot, this will get to be a tough town to deal with and a tough team to deal with in a big hurry.

The problem with V is that he cannot avoid saying the things that really don't need saying...things that don't result in progress, don't move you forward and if anything are likely to move you backwards. Why can't he avoid them? See above. One of the major reasons he has not been able to get back into baseball for nine years I suspect.

Whatever happens it will be interesting. You can bank on that.

Come on, man, he invented the sandwich wrap!

It"s less grandiose than claiming that he invented the internet. It's just a sandwich.

There was a DJ in Boston years ago (name escapes me) who says the Duke of Sandwich din't invent the " sandwhich" either. It was actually the Earl of Shrewsbury. Perhaps the concession stands at Fenway will start serving "Valentines":D

Calls Carl Crawford. Doesn't hear back. Whines to the media.

This is going to be a disaster. This stuff should be left in house.

I disagree. Players need to be accountable, and that means talking to your new manager. You don't answer my phone calls, or call me back for a couple weeks after I've tried to contact you? Guess what? I'm going to put it out in the media.

Players need to respect their manager and be accountable to him. I'm sure Bobby V gave Crawford plenty of time to call back before he told the media about it. It's Carl's own fault. Answer your phone when your manager calls.

If your boss called you and left a message saying he wanted to talk to you, would you just ignore him?

I have no problem with V. and his talking. I am thinking that the media will do a number of Beckett next year at ST. He screws up this bad, never says a word about it in the last few months unlike a couple of the other pitchers, gives V. crap for saying that he pitches too slow when V. does reach out to him.

Oh yea....the Boston media will be looking for Beckett stew.

And speaking of talkers......the new GM never lets ten words do when he can say 100. That man can fill an entire column with his answer to two questions.

I believe that one of Bobby V's first managers was Dick Williams. Williams would give post game interviews calling out players and he do it right near their locker so they could overhear it. Personal issues should be dealt with in house. Game performance doesn't need to stay in house. If a guy throws to the wrong base or makes some other fundamental miscue, there is no reason not to call it out in the press. The fans already saw it. Everyone knows it. There's no reason to tip toe around feelings with that stuff. I have no problem with this phone call business either. Let Bobby V send a message early that when he has something to say, he expects people to listen. They don't have to like him.

A700, it's not the 60's anymore. Players make too much money and won't want to put up with that.

We can all sit here and say "it doesn't matter that the coach whines to the media," I just don't think it will push today's player in the right way.

Well. Obviously not whining to the media and giving them too much slack ended up in beer and chicken in the clubhouse. I'd much rather have the players have a distaste for the manager, but respect him and be a little bit disciplined than to have the players love the manager but have no respect for him and act like clowns in the clubhouse.

They used to say the same thing in the 60's and 70's.

My problem isn't with discipline, it's with running to WEEI. If I have a guaranteed contract for 10M+ a year and feel disrespected by the manager, do I perform harder or sulk harder? My guess it's the later.

That's not a comfortable place to be for the player.

I agree that players need to be accountable. I agree that Carl should call Valentine back.

I disagree about Valentine going to the media with this. That is the completely wrong approach IMO, and will end up alienating players more than it will help.

As MVP said, this needs to be left in house.
