That's it for Bedard, he was pulled after 1 and a third after giving up 3 runs. He was very wild but as you can see from the graphic, when he was throwing strikes they were often called balls and when he threw pitches outside of the zone the hitters were getting hits on them. Not a good outing, but his stuff was good. He was throwing 92-93 mph on his fastball and had a very good curve.

Good outing for the Sox. bad outing for Seattle.

Now they can't ask the world for him.

I'd get him for a lower price.

Bedard can pitch when he's healthy. Just needs a start or 2 to get sharp.

Box score, by the way, says 1.1 innings, 5 ER.

I thought so too, until I read this:

CHICAGO — With the Red Sox, among many other teams, poised to scout Erik Bedard tonight in Seattle, former Baltimore Orioles executive Jim Duquette has some advice for Theo Epstein.

Be careful.

“He’s not a ’spotlight’ guy,” Duquette said of Bedard. “And he’s not reliable from a health standpoint — as we’ve seen. Caveat Emptor.”

Bedard (AP photo) will be making his return from a one-month stay on the disabled list with a knee injury to pitch against the Tampa Bay Rays. He’s 4-6 with a 3.00 ERA and has logged 90 innings over 15 starts for the Mariners this season. He had his two best — and healthiest — seasons with the Orioles, winning 15 games in 2006 and 13 games in 2007. Overall, he was 40-34 with a 3.83 ERA in five seasons with Baltimore.

But Duquette, the Orioles’ vice president of baseball operations from 2006-08, said Bedard’s injury history should be a red flag to the Red Sox, who are seeking to bolster their rotation because Clay Buchholz is recovering far more slowly than expected from a strained lower back muscle. Duquette noted that Bedard hasn’t made a start in August or September since the 2007 season. In fact, he always seems to get injured in July, shortly before the trade deadline. And his name has come up in trade rumors in previous seasons.

“To me, it’s a sign he doesn’t want to be traded,” Duquette said. “I don’t know how he fills that void (for the Red Sox) right now. Even if he’s healthy tonight, I would still have some questions.”

Duquette also said Bedard lacks the makeup to be successful in a big market.

“He doesn’t like the attention,” said Duquette, now an analyst for MLB Network. “When he’s the guy, he doesn’t succeed. And I always thought, because he didn’t want to be the guy, that it would hold him back. I thought he’d be a real solid No. 3 (starter), maybe in a small market. But it would concern me going into a big market. After I left the Orioles, I even tried to dissuade a couple of big-market clubs that were interested in him.

“If the price tag was inexpensive enough, it’s something you might consider. But you have to do your homework.”

More in tomorrow’s Herald.

Sounds like he's not a guy who would prosper in a big stage, and the last thing I'd want is a guy who blows up in a post season game bc he can't handle the pressure.

The news says Kuroda wants to stay in LA.

Bedard will certainly be dealt.

Jiminez will be dealt if the price is right. Though I think the Rockies are nuts to deal him.

he's having a typical sophomore blues year.

Harden? Haven't heard much.

Watch Ramon Hernandez--Reds catcher--get dealt.

I'd like to see them come out of this with a RHd role hitter/outfielder, and one or two starters.

Bedard with a terrible audition.

If they're looking for a "roll the dice" kind of guy, they might as well stick with Miller and Weiland moving forward. Bedard is impressive when he's on, but this isn't a team that should be testing guys out down the stretch unless they absolutely have to. I see no reason to avoid Bedard, but they shouldn't give up much for him. He may be great, he may be Wade Miller #2.

I suspect they will make a really hard push at Jimenez over the next 48 hours. That would be a significant splash and would definitely aid this team, regardless of how good the trade pieces become.

EDIT: don't want to start a new thread, but Phillies added Hunter Pence. Clearly they see the WS within reach... I hope Theo is thinking as aggressively.

Yeah. It's time for Theo to stop dicking around, trying to preserve his minor leaguers, and get some pitching to replace that rag-tag end of the rotation.

The Phillies have vaulted ahead of the Red Sox and the Yankees by getting Pence--an all-star player who would have looked good in RF in Boston, and filled a need for a solid RHd bat. What's ennerving is the Phillies didn't give up much to get him. Less than what the Red Sox have around to give. They almost got him by default, though the Braves must have been in there somewhere.

Meh... I wouldn't say they didn't give up much to get him. Cosart and Singleton are their two best prospects (even though they're still raw). The Phillies system is pretty weak now after three straight years of dealing for major players at the deadline.

Phillies still have Dom Brown, Colvin(who isn't have a good year but still has a good arm), May, James(who I like a lot), Valle, Biddle and then some lower end guys but people who could still help out. They could go out and get a Heath Bell even without giving up Brown.

How did Bedard do last night? I heard Orsillo talk about him on the broadcast. If we get him, he's starting to age, but still has some good stuff in him. On the bad side, he's inconsistent and a younger version of Wake.

Pence is overrated. His average this season is tied to his BABIP. He's not a bad player, but he doesn't represent a huge upgrade given that they're going to send Dominic Brown back to AAA and continue with Raul Ibanez and his -1.2 WAR.

The Rumors say the Red Sox have turned to Kuroda, after Bedard's performance last night. Meanwhile, the Tigers grabbed Fister.

I would be disappointed if all they got is Dice-Kuroda, who wants to stay on the West Coast.

I don't believe all these twists and turns I'm seeing in the media.

Seems like we're in on Quentin and Thornton' date=' no idea why though.[/quote']

Thronton, LHP that pumps 98, as shown last last night. Could be a great reliever. But I don't think they'll move him. That would be really dumb to move when they're 2.5 back.

I'd love Thornton but why would we look at Quentin?

:dunno:

Looks like the Yankees are all over Ubaldo. That's almost fine with me because I think Felix is going to be available this offseason, and the Sox won't have to outbid the Yanks here. Felix makes $10mm right now. He makes $18.5mm in 2012, $19.5mm in 2013, and $20mm in 2014. That's $58.5mm over 3 years. I bet he's dealt this offseason.

That'd be nice. Grab Kuroda for the stretch run and then grab Felix in the offseason. We'll be winning the division for the next f***ing decade :D

The Yankees need to be in on Ubaldo. Besides the paucity of their rotation even with Sabathia, they need to do something to make sure they aren't screwed over if he opts out.

I've thought all along that the Yankees would be the team that won the desperation contest that is the potential Ubaldo trade.

It's not desperation at all; Ubaldo is a great piece, and if they bring him, they will be very competitive and tough in the POs.

The Red Sox haven't been in contact with the Rockies about Jimenez since Thursday, tweets Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald.

The Yankees are all over Jimenez, a source tells ESPN's Tim Kurkjian.

The Yankees are hearing that the Rockies may lower the price on Jimenez today, tweets Ken Rosenthal, but still not to a point that they consider realistic. Renck tweets that the Rockies' price hasn't changed during the process.

The Red Sox are pushing hard for White Sox right fielder Carlos Quentin and reliever Matt Thornton, tweets USA Today's Bob Nightengale, but Chicago would have to be overwhelmed with prospects.

The Red Sox talked to the Athletics about a possible trade for starter Rich Harden and outfielder Josh Willingham, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney, but it's unclear whether the deal currently has a pulse.

I don't believe any of this stuff coming out of the networks--which are mostly NY-based, anyways. Half of what you hear is about the Yankees.

However, I refuse to believe the Yankees won't get a major pitcher. They'll do what it takes. That means they'll outbid everybody for Jiminez. They want another big stud to go with CC. Now.

I'm not so sure about Theo. He has that love affair with his draftees which sometimes helps, but can also hurt. He is less likely to go the extra mile, adding another prospect. And I have my doubts about the Red Sox surviving the rest of the season with Wake, Lackey and Miller.
