So we win 8 in a row based mostly on offense' date=' then our offense goes cold and it looks like we're staring 3 losses in a row in the face. Shite[/quote']

And the one constant during the second half, even when they're winning? Poor starting pitching.

It's OK, they are just getting it out of their system now. And, besides, starting pitching isn't really that important in October. You worry too much.

Very true, starting pitching isn't all that important in October. That's why the Yankees won the World Series in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. Oh wait...

All sarcasm aside, there's a reason the Yankees felt the need (even when their pitching was going really well) to give up Montero for two months of Cliff Lee. Like many thought at the time, it wasn't overkill or an unnecessary luxury. They knew they were thin on starting pitching, and, at some point, they were going to pitch poorly.

But with that being said, I'm not worried about CC, although I'm worried about everyone else. If Pettitte comes back healthy (and pitches well) and Burnett turns it around, this team can win a championship, but those are a couple of very big ifs.

We need one other starter to get hot. If Pettitte comes back and pitches well, then we should be fine. AJ is what he is. Either dominant or sucky, and he was that in the playoffs last yr. We got by on one ace, one hit or miss guy and one consistently average guy.

AJ had five starts in last year's postseason. He was poor in one of them, and awful in another.

But here are his other three starts.

6 IP, 1 ER vs. MIN

6.1 IP, 2 ER vs. LAA

7 IP, 1 ER vs. PHI

You think that the current version of AJ Burnett is capable of doing that?

Posted
I dont put anything past AJ. Just like I dont put it past him that he allows 7ER in every start.

Sure, anything is possible. It's possible that Jeter could have a huge postseason, but there's no reason to expect it. At this point, the way AJ is pitching, there's no reason to expect those kind of performances against the best offensive teams in baseball.

Most Yankees' fans still want to cling to the Good AJ/Bad AJ meme that rang so true last year. Unfortunately, it just isn't the case this year. His overall numbers are much worse this year than they were last year. A more accurate meme for this year would be Decent AJ/Bad AJ, a meme that would be another way to describe a subpar pitcher. Good AJ was able to get it done in three of his postseason starts last year. Decent AJ, in all likelihood, won't be able to replicate that feat this year.

We'll see. He's looked better in his last 2 starts' date=' we'll see how he goes into the postseason. He has the stuff to dominate, I wouldnt put it past him[/quote']

He looked decent against the Athletics and Orioles. If that gives you reason to think that he's going to be able to pitch well enough to win a postseason game against some of the best offenses in baseball, then I guess we just see things differently.

Stuff only gets you so far, and AJ's stuff has barely got him off the starting blocks this year. I'm not expecting anything different in the postseason.

We'll see y228. I have no expectations for AJ.

If they have to lose, I'd rather it be to Buck than any other manager.

EDIT: Although I obviously wouldn't be able to take solace in that if this was a more important game. But whenever they aren't playing the Yankees, I'll root for the O's.

Posted
I'll tell you' date=' the O's look like a new club. They hustle now and arent completely dead.[/quote']

That's what happens when a team gets a real manager. Now if they could just get a real owner....who knows?

They might very well get swept by the O's, and then they'll go into a series against Texas where all three pitching matchups favor the Rangers. With this team's starting pitching, coupled with the difficult schedule down the stretch, I'd be surprised if they won the division.

Nova is throwing really well today. Burnett pitched well enough to win. And our ace is the only one who put in a shitcan performance. Getting swept here is much less on the pitchers and much more on the fact that we are halfway through with our third game and have scored 6 total runs

The only team that scares me in the playoffs is TB. Texas has Cliff Lee and nothing else that scares me in the playoffs, and he's hurt. Minnesota has nobody that worries me in a playoff series. Tampa is the only team that can run up 2 starters that I think we'll have trouble with in Price and Shields (who has dominated us this yr). We won the WS last yr based on good enough pitching and a lot of offense. If our offense goes into a hole again, then we dont win regardless of pitching performance

Never said it was on the pitching. Tell me' date=' which part of my post do you disagree with?[/quote']

The only way we lose the division is if we play like s*** down the stretch. I dont care about schedules, when this team is playing well, nobody can beat them. They just ran off 8 wins in a row with minimal pitching. Now, they actually get 2 good outings and they cannot hit. Its the ebb and flow of the game. Our offense will outdo TB, which is why I think we win the division by 2-3 games
