Jeter gets ahead 2-1, gets a fastball right down the middle, takes a good swing, and hits a looper to the right fielder. That might be an even worse sign than his countless weak grounders.

I'm not to concerned about Jeter's performance this year, he was fantasic last season but now having a down year. People generally assume when veteran's don't preform they're washed up yet when younger players don't they're just going through a slump.

Div' date=' he's looked terrible and he's looked old. The good thing is, we didnt need vintage Jeter to make the playoffs and it should help in negotiations[/quote']

The Yankees have absolutely zero leverage in negotiations with Jeter. He'll get whatever he wants.

If we offer him 2 yrs $20 mil' date=' who is going to outbid us?[/quote']

That's true, but I just don't think they're going to risk lowballing him (in his mind), and possibly offending him. I can't see them asking him to take a pay cut.

Do you think Jeter should be dropped to the bottom of the order, assuming everyone is healthy and playing?

I think he should be, but I also think that its kinda pointless to do it now, and with the playoffs upon us, we know he wont cower in the corner when time comes. So he stays at #2, but once he inks the new contract, I'd stick him in the #9 hole

This isn't for no reason though. At ages 35+, at some point, it's not a slump, it's an age based decline of natural ability. It's not a general assumption arbitrarily. He's getting farther and farther beyond the age where the stars fade. Rivera is the exception to the rule, hordes of others are the rule.

I'm going to give him benefit of the doubt and assume fatigue has played some part in his decline. With the issues earlier in the season he wasn't given many days off to rest. Jeter has known to be clutch, I think he deserves a chance to prove to he can still get it done in the post season when it matters most.

Plus dropping Jeter may offend him and cause tension between he and Girardi.

He would still be given a chance in the postseason every single game. It would just happen at the bottom of the order instead of the top.

As for possibly creating tension between Jeter and Girardi, assuming Jeter signs an extension with the Yankees, at some point Girardi is going to have to make some decisions that likely won't sit well with Jeter. If it has to happen at some point, there's no reason to put it off if it should happen now.

exactly. Defensively, he has lot 2 steps. That much is absolutely certain. His bat may or may not recover. He hasnt lost any bat speed, but he has lost any and all drive of the ball

I agree with you there, but in Jeter's case I think he will bounce back to an extent, going from a .334 avg with a .871 ops in '09 down to .266 in avg with a .701 ops in '10 seems pretty drastic.

But there's also the decline from 2006 to 2007, and then from 2007 to 2008. 2009 seems like the outlier to me, and possibly Jeter's last hurrah.

That's crazy talk. You don't trend like that. You take his best most recent season and project down from there. What are you thinking?

Good point. 7/140. Get it done Cashman.

Might turn out to be a game losing decision. Our pen has been money and Burnett had a pretty good outing until he faced Burnett. He keeps AJ in to face him and it probably will cost us the game

And the night gets started with a poor read from Granderson.

EDIT: And a passed ball by Posada.

EDIT 2: It's too bad the Yankees have their best center fielder in left field.

The O's lead 3-0 in the first inning and C.C pitching at home? Am I missing something?

Some poor command from CC, some poor defense from Granderson and Posada, and some bad luck.
