And today was a good day. Yankees win, Sox lose, and Rays are about to lose. Yankees reclaim sole possession of 1st, the Rays slip to second and the sox are now out of it. Never doubted the Yankees lead over them, but I thought the Rays has a small chance to fall apart. But the sox have done so as well. Regardless, as a fan of the enemy, the sox season is far from a bust. They lose their 1, 2, 3, and 8 hitter for the yr. They lose their #5 hitter for 3 weeks, spent almost a month without their second best pitcher and have seen almost nothing from Beckett and mediocrity from Lackey. The fact that the sox were relevant coming into the last series of August was a feat in and of itself. But now, the sox should bring up a ton of prospects and play them almost exclusively. Get their feet wet or showcase them for the offseason and make another run at it next yr. I do agree with a700 that this team was flawed from the getgo, and even with good health, I dont think they outplay the Yankees or the Rays. But they are still going to get close to 90 wins in a yr when their team was decimated. Tito and the scrubs really deserve a standing O. On paper, without Ells, Pedey, Youk, and Cameron, this team sucks. It is amazing they have been this close

I hope that bitch Burnett gets lit up like a f***ing christmas tree.

Well, he wasnt, and another day gets ticked off the calendar. Yankee magic number for clinching a playoff spot down to 22

He was never lightning quick' date=' but Jeter is now borderline slow.[/quote']

I am really not all that excited to see Jeter locked up for 4 seasons. It better be a 2yr deal or else we'll have ARod and Jeter around as dead weight at high salary

Jeter will retire a Yankee' date=' even if it means he has to play different position than shortstop[/quote']

I would love to have Jeter retire a Yankee. The problem is, he plays a position that requires some serious defensive ability and he's looked old and slow this yr. So, you move him off the position, where can he go? He cant go to 3B, ARod is there. He cannot go to 2B, Cano is there. If you put him in the OF, who do you move? Granderson, who is finally looking like the guy we dealt for? Swisher, possibly our second best offensive weapon this yr? Gardner, the guy who is top 10 in OBP in the bigs? The problem is, Jeter cannot stay at SS and he doesnt have a spot

I have a feeling they will lock up Jeter untill he's 40, giving him contract in the range of 4 years / 80 mill, he still has enough in the tank to play SS at the moment, but in 2-3 years they'll have to consider moving him to a corner OF position.

He's been the face of the Yankees for over a decade and is on the verge of 3000 hits. Not to mention he doesn't want to play anywhere else.

"I’ve said from Day One, this is the only organization I’ve ever wanted to play for, and that’s still true today, I was a Yankees fan growing up. This is where I want to be. I’ve never envisioned myself playing anywhere else, and hopefully I don’t have to," - Jeter

I could see A-Rod forced into a full-time DH role sometime soon, which would allow to Jeter to slide over to 3B. But I agree entirely with your thoughts on the issue.

I think the ARod thing is further down the line than you think. ARod has looked pretty nimble at 3b up until his calf was injured. He is finally recovering from his hip surgery. And I think that will all depend on Montero as well. This kid is going to be in the bigs in some capacity in 2011, since they'll need to protect him after 2011 anyway. And I think he and Posada will be playing off between C and DH in 2011.

I think they made the right decision starting Javy today, but more of the same from him. Even though the outs were soft, most of them were on very hittable pitches, that the batters just got under. And then there's obviously the two home runs and the four pitch walk.

Pettitte should be back soon. He threw a 50 pitch sim game with no trouble. He should have a rehab start next week and might be back in 2 weeks assuming he feels well. Javy is the odd man out

What's the deal with Pettitte? Is he retiring?

If I were the Yankees, I'd want him back next year. Lee or no Lee.

No way to know. It'll probably be the same as last year, with Pettitte making a decision about a month after the season ends.

If we get Lee, I dont see us dishing out another 8 figure contract for Andy. You'd have 4 spots in the rotation locked up long term and a system brimming with pitching prospects ready to make the move.

That's true. The decision might not fall entirely on Pettitte, although if he wants to come back for the same price, I'm not sure the Yankees say no.
