Dammit, put him at the bottom of the order. This is ridiculous. I can deal with him being close to an automatic out, but having him at the top of the order compounds the problem.

EDIT: If Girardi isn't going to do anything, Cashman, who has proven time and time again that he isn't influenced by sentimental factors, needs to step in here.

If he's this bad in the post season they should give him a 2-year deal; let him get his 3000 hits and say goodbye.

What he does in the postseason should have absolutely no influence on the contract he gets, because it's such a small sample size. Cashman said prior to last postseason that he wouldn't be influenced by what goes on in the postseason, and he proved that. The worst possible thing the Yankees can do is place more significance on a handful of ABs in the postseason than what he did over the course of the entire season. Fortunately, if we use last year as the barometer, the Yankees won't do that.

Posada gets ahead 2-0 in the count, needing only a fly ball, and all he can manage is a weak looper to the second basemen, on the pitch middle up (basically the perfect pitch for a fly ball).

Your making the playoffs no worries.

Right, and the division isn't all that important, so losing this game is hardly the end of the world. I would like to see them play better though. But they hit a rough patch last September, so this could very well be meaningless.

I just really wish Girardi put on a squeeze play with Jeter up in the 12th inning. It would have worked perfectly.

Who would you prefer to play in the first round?

Right now I'd have to say the Rangers, but only because of the uncertainty surrounding Lee and Hamilton. If both of them are healthy, it's a toss up, and I'd probably even lean towards the Twins.

No questions for Joe on the post-game about Jeter. How long can they allow him to hit at the top of the order, when he's been horrendous, and they have much better options? If he slumps for the next two weeks, would they consider it? How about for the rest of the regular season?

If Lee is healthy and can pitch twice in a 5 game series, that could be very tough.

I have a feeling they would wait untill the World Series before putting Jeter at the bottom of the order. Given his track record, they probably think he deserves a chance in the post season, if they did it now he might feel insulted.

I agree, it's all contingent on Lee, although Liriano is no push over.

There's no way they're going to let him hit at the top of the order in the first two rounds, and then drop him once the World Series rolls around. If he gets dropped in the order, it's going to happen before the end of the regular season.

As for possibly offending him, they're going to have to move him out of the top of the order eventually. As loyal as they are to him, when his OPS+ is 60 in 2014, he's not going to be hitting leadoff. So if this is something that will be unavoidable down the line, why not start now, when it would make them a better team?

One of the reasons that it was a good idea to let Torre go is that he had become so loyal to a select group of players, always favoring them when it came to playing time and lineup positioning. On the flip side, if you were a reliever (for instance) that Torre wasn't particularly fond of, you might go two weeks without pitching at times. One of the best parts about bringing in a new manager was that the new manager was supposed to be able to be impartial. Well here's Girardi's first big test, and I'm not optimistic.

Right, that's probably the big difference between Lee and Liriano. As I noted before, it's all about the health of Lee and Hamilton. You could be talking about the best hitter and pitcher in the postseason.

I don't see how what happened in 2003, 2004, and even 2009 is going to have any bearing on what happens in this year's postseason. Take the Red Sox/Angels for example. The Red Sox beat the Angels in 2004, 2007, and 2008. That didn't stop the Angels from sweeping the Red Sox last year. Additionally, the Twins played the Yankees very tough this year, winning two out of six games, and narrowly losing three others.

Yeah what happened 5+ years ago isn't revelant but I think the Twins would be be easier matchup over the Rangers; with Lee healthy could single handedly equal two losses.

Yup, that's a fair and reasonable take on things.

Ouch, only a 1 game lead on the Rays now. But the Twins are better than the Rangers based on record, so could winning the Wild Card rather than the division potentially be a good thing?

For a multitude of reasons winning the division isn't paramount. If it comes down to resting players and ensuring everyone's health for the postseason, or going all out for the division, I hope they go with the former. Additionally, considering the current state of the Yankees' rotation, and the difference between the Yankees' and Rays' schedules in the remaining three weeks, I don't like the Yankees' chances of winning the division anyway.

Rivera with 2 innings on Friday night is back out there again tonight. Why?

He didn't throw many pitches on Friday, so I really don't have an issue with sending him back out there tonight. Unfortunately it didn't work out. These last two games have been rough.
