I give Papelbon the edge over Nathan and Soria because he performs in a big market, and in the postseason (this season notwithstanding, and Nathan was worse this postseason).

Top 3 closer? Really? He's not even top 5

Name 5 better.

are you kidding me who is better other than Rivera and Hoffman.

Hoffman is not better right now.

Name those better.

Rivera

Nathan (maybe)

Soria (maybe)

.....

He's head-and-shoulders better than Soria if he throws the f***ing split.

Idk, it might be the Soria fanboy in me, but I think Soria is at least comparable to Papelbon....but since Papelbon does it when games matter into October, I'll give him the edge.

nathan plays in a weak division and so does soria. papelbon has to face the yankees the rays and the jays on a constant basis.

He isnt throwing the split, so therefore, you cannot say he's better with that caveat. Thats like saying Rivera is better when he throws a 4 seamer.

I want some of the juice you'll be making with those cherries.

? Not sure what you mean. You say Papelbon would be great if he used the split. He isnt using the split.

he still did pretty damn good when not using it.

Of course you don't understand.

Let's leave it at that.

I agree' date=' he was damn good. But saying someone is even better when they do something that they arent doing then isnt it a moot point?[/quote']

he about the same amount of saves this year than he did in 2006 and in 2007 when he used his splitter. i do feel however that if he used his splitter he would have thrown less pitches raising his probability of more save chances.

I get what you're saying but the fact that you always have a "but" when you even come close to saying something positive that's Sox-related gets f***ing old real quick

Billy Wagner, Rocco Baldelli, Paul Byrd, Casey Kotchman

Out of these free agents which of these players do you want back?

Since Wagner has said he is now not gonna retire. it was the press f***ing s*** up again.

Im liking the first and the last guys but the middle to aren't horrible additions to any team.

Maybe if we sign kotchman he could be used in later trade deals.

Kotchman has 2 years of arb left I believe. Wagner wanted to not have his option picked up and I imagine the sox will honor that request and hope to get a draft pick.

That leaves Byrd and Baldelli.

I like Baldelli, I just wish he was reliably healthy. If he were he would be a great platoon partner. Since he's not I would prefer that the Sox look around for something else.

If Byrd is necessary next year then this club hasn't done its job in the offseason.

I guess we may not do our job in the offseason...

I hope otherwise.

But there are articles and opinions galore that this is just a transition year for the Red Sox. Because we are supposed to wait till next offseason for big deals to come off the books. Gammons is even saying that 2011 could be a down year for the Sox.

I hope Theo just has everyone fooled into believing he won't do anything big

(And Off-topic, but....)

Anyone else get annoyed reading "upbeat" Josh Beckett's comments following his team's ALDS sweep?

p.s. I see Beckett still has his undying love for 'Tek

Anyone know anything about the Pitcher they were scouting?

Yusei Kikuchi is a high school kid with around a 90+mph fastball and throws a pretty good curve. Nothing that would impact us for a few years if ever.

What did Beckett say that was so egregious? I read the article and his comments were very porfessional. Did you want him to throw Varitek under th bus?

Wagner will only be back, if somehow he becomes a closer here. Reality, prob wont happen....but you never know.

Baldelli will not be back. Platooning with another player who is sometimes an injury risk.....not a good mix. He did a nice job, but they will get someone who is more of a utility player.

Byrd.....will most likely retire. He did what was asked of him.

Kotchman...not sure what to think with him. I dont see him as a starting player, but not as a backup either. I think he may be dealt to a smaller market franchise where he can be a starting 1B. Maybe he nets us a useful backup player/bullpen arm.

tazawa could be up in the majors this year. i think he will be like buchholz.

Tazawa could be up in the majors this year. I don't think he will be like Buchholz, but he could end up as a good pitcher. I thought his stuff was pretty good for a guy in his first professional year.
