Quite a few closers on the FA market this year. Surprisingly many really.

........

Let's leave it at that.

Show Wagner the money, and I'll guarentee you he won't retire. There are other decent options as well on the market such as valverde and soriano. And who knows, maybe bard shows up next year in ST like he did in May-July and is reliable enough to be part time closer

why on earth would people give up valuable top prospects for Papelbon when they can go to the free agent market and sign Jose Valverde, Mike Gonzalez, Billy Wagner or 3-4 other half decent closer types and keep their youngsters? Very, very few GM's are so in love with the closer that they'd go after Paps in that situation.

Gonzalez, Gregg, Rodney, Soriano, Valverde.

Papelbon please.

So you'd rather have a guys who was 5th in the AL in unclean innnings to pitch 1 inning rather than a top hitter like hanley or adrin Gonzalez?

Wasn't Street a main piece to get holliday?

Carlos Gonzalez was also involved in that trade if memory serves. Just because Street's the big leaguer involved in the deal doesn't mean he was the main player.

If Gonzalez comes through in Colorado, he could replace Holliday's production nicely. Mediocre closer on the side? Score.

And we're sending over top spects from us and Philly

does typing the "pro" really require THAT much more effort?

and...

that's a really dumb anti-Papelbon argument

i would much rather have a guy who had 1.85 era and can dance like papelbon.

lol ERA, one of the worst stats you could use. Look at his tRA. He had career lows in many numbers this year

Yet was still an upper-echelon closer.

Specially compared to the suck-party in the FA market.

While I agree with your main point, Dipre, some of that "suck party" are actually pretty darned good.

Valverde in particular has been an elite reliever each of the last 3 years. he isn't as good as Papelbon but he's a fine closer in his own right.

i think you should prolly think once more. if his era was like in 2006 at 0.92 you would be all over it and cheering about it. he had his second best K/9 and if he worked on control and used his splitter more he will be as dominate as his previous years. 3rd most strikeouts in career.

Not one of the worst' date=' but not the be all end all by any means.[/quote']

although papelbon had a high whip this year he was still a good pitcher and he will be even better next year. i think even he was disappointed by his performance of walking so many people and he will work his ASS OFF this offseason and be back to 2006 self.

you're saying ERA is one the worst stats you can use when you pulled out a gem like "unclean innings"?!

Papelbon had a higher H/9 last season. He also had a higher K/9 this season.

This was clearly his worst year, but he's a top 3 closer in the game and one who should be held on to unless the offer was incredible.

And if you really want me to... papelbon has had a career low in

BB/9,H/9 K/BB, WHIP, OBP against, tRA SB totals, BAbip WAR, STF, FIP

walks per 9= 3.2 his high=4.5 his low= 1.0

hits per 9= 7.1 high=8.7 low=4.6

k/bb =3.17 high=9.63 low=2.00

whip=1.147 high=1.471 low=0.771

would you like me to continue?

i really wanna know where he is getting his stats. i completely agree with you. papelbon was not as good as he could but he will blow us away next year.

My real concern with Papelbon is whether the FO can get him to start throwing the split again.

He's simply not the same pitcher without it.

i have said that before. he didnt have command this year and that is because he never used the splitter. he relied on the slider and the fastball.
