As luck would have it, CB sent me a PM this morning with two picks and Smoak was the other, after Teagarden.

He's back on the clock.

I'd like all members of the league to share their opinion on how the draft has gone for them thus far.

I.E: How many of the players you planned to pick did you manage to get, and how do you honestly think your team is shaping up.

My draft has been one case after another of me thinking that I should make a small reach for a certain player, deciding against it in the belief that I can snare said player with my next pick, and someone else takes the player.

i've gotten pretty much every guy i've set my sights on with maybe two or three exceptions.

well i was hoping that brandon wood would fall a few rounds, so now im going to be trying to nab up a few SS prospects, ive got my eye on 3 in particular, within the next few rounds. I do really like my lineup though, and it should be competitive for at least the next 5 years. My rotation im also happy with considering how late i started putting it together. but my bullpen is another story, im not quite sure how that fits into my plan over the next few rounds.... probably look for a closer within the next couple of picks and put the rest off until i've finished my plan for my lineup

I've had a few targets slip away. Smoak' date=' Liriano, Verlander, etc... Most within two picks of my selection.[/quote']

Verlander i was eyeing since the beginning of the draft, and i figured he'd return to being a in the top echelon of pitchers since Detroit stopped f***ing with his delivery, so i decided to take him early and avoid losing him, and turns out i was right.

Players I wanted but didn't get:

Nick Markakis

Felix Hernandez

Matt Cain

Chad Billingsley

Matt Kemp

Adrian Gonzalez

Adam Wainwright

Justin Verlander

Tommy Hanson

Kevin Slowey

Denard Span

Jered Weaver

I am in like with my team. Not in love with it. My outfield will wind up being comparatively weak. First base is still a question mark. My rotation is solid. I don't know if any of them are perennial "aces," but they'll get the job done and keep me in games. Volstad probably has the most upside. My closer is lights out. My catcher is arguably the best defensive catcher in the game. Cano isn't the best second baseman, but he's a pure hitter. Escobar has decent range at short, and I like what he brings to the table offensively. Puts the ball in play, doesn't strike out much, but also grounds into too many double plays. I feel like I got lucky getting Longoria, even with the Number 4 pick. YOTN taking Tulo 1st overall was a gift. The Big Donkey strikes out a lot, but makes up for it with his power and OBP. And since he's my DH, his defense is rendered meaningless.

my biggest misses were granderson, verlander, and v-mart. but i picked morneau over granderson and i'd do it again, and liriano over martinez which im ok with. Ethier over verlander may have been a mistake, but i really like my outfield and im ok with how my pitching turned out so im not heart-broken about any of those misses. i was starting to really fall in love with the idea of Wood at SS until A-Rod is ready to DH, but we'll see how the rest of the draft goes and how that all ends up for me.

I'm pretty happy with my guys. The team I assembled so far is more or less an Earl Weaver squad. "Pitching, defense, and the 3 run homer." I've got a dominant ace and lot of innings out of my other starters, a fairly well-balanced lineup and a good deal of power up the middle. If I can score some decent middle relief I should be doing OK.

this doesnt belong here.... but what about him for the sox? how much do you think it would cost, seeing as he isnt playing there anyway?

They'd probably want Lars Anderson.

Earlier on, it seemed like my guys were always getting picked right before my turn but in recent rounds, I've had 4-5 guys lined up for my block of 2 picks and when it came time to choose, I usually picked the guys who I felt were at positions with little depth left.

Actually, knowing the Angels, they'd want Argenis Diaz, Yamaico Navarro and a pitcher.

That was the old GM. The new one pulls the trigger on deals. Wood is an interesting option. I've read he is destined for 3B. But maybe only because he is in the Angels system.

I'm not sure what his current value is though.

Edit: He's absolutely destroying the PCL league(AAA),( 29G, 111 AB's), he's hitting a modest

297AVG, 10HR, 22R, 33H, 5 2B, 21 RBI,.376 OBP, .631 SLG, with an OPS of 1.007.

Sweet merciful Christ, dude is raking the ball. He is also listed as a 3B. I guess that could lower his value in some way. But he's going to cost a good prospect. Maybe a Bard straight up type deal. If it's lower level guys, it's probably a 2 for 1.

Regarding my draft, in retrospect I probably could have done better than Joba with my first overall pitching selection but I think that picking up Lee and Saunders in consecutive rounds gives me some nice depth to work with.

I'll take my top 3 picks up against any other team - Pujols, Martin, and Quentin are all elite producers at their positions.

I was naive to think guys like Billingsley, Kershaw, and Verlander would fall to me, but the only pick that I got "stolen" from me was the Mat Gamel pick as he was next on my board when ORS took him.

He can really hit from the left side of the plate, and I think his production at the bottom of the order (I have him hitting 7th) is going to be valuable. He is off to a great start this year, and I don't see why that would change.

EDIT: I might have picked him too early, but his offensive numbers out of the center field position are quite good.

Maybe for your 4th or 5th OF.

You should have said the pick out loud. If it sounds dumb, it probably is:lol:

You think he's that much worse' date=' offensively, than Jacoby Ellsbury?[/quote']

Really good point

Cabrera at this point really isn't a terrible pick as long as you expect this offense to continue (I don't, a lot of his success comes at NYS)

There's lots of players I would have taken before Cabrera, but the same rings true for Ells.

I admit, it might have been a little early to pick him, but I think his offensive production out of the centerfield position is pretty good.

And Kilo, you're absolutely right, it's all about whether or not I expect his offense to continue. This year, to me, it seems like he is doing a much better job of working deeper counts, and he just seems like a different player than the Melky Cabrera of past years.

I understand that what I'm going off for this year is an incredibly small sample size, and because of that, I expected to take my lumps for this pick. However, playing centerfield, and batting 7th, I don't think it's such a bad pick.

Ellsbury's upside is greater just based on their minor-league numbers and that doesn't even take into account the difference between them on the basepaths
