Right, I'm sure you guys would have been devastated if Cashman left for Philly.

I apologized, I knew it was wrong. But that's how I honestly feel right now, I enjoy the Red Sox being in chaos.

But you guys are screwed.

pretty much...odds are, if Cahsman is the GM of the Philadelphia Phillies right now, we're not ever hearing the end of it from some of the guys here.

No. Cashman leaving would have made your team better. He signs chump after chump and yet you think he's doing a great job. Whatever man. You enjoy your Pavano and your Wright, your A-Rod Sheffield and Contreras. Go ahead and enjoy Cashman, NOBODY was happier when he resigned than me.

shut up...I was simply agreeing with ARod, because it is true, someone called him classless I guess for saying something about Theo leaving, but if Cashman had left you all would be saying something. Im not starting any problems or anything...and exactly what reason is there to ban me, im not like some of the other Yankee fans that come here and make stupid posts and threads just completly bashing the Red Sox.

And YES, I know this is a Red Sox message board, but unless I get banned I plan on sticking around a little.

I don't have a problem with it. But please realize this: at no point have you assumed that any of us would log onto the YANKEES message board and laugh at them for it. I feel like it is both totally appropriate and ethical to laugh at the Yankees moves on a RED SOX board, but I wouldn't be such a prick as to do it on the yankees board. I'm not saying your a prick (cause I appreciate your input and you are a regular poster) but just saying that we would have been happy if Cashman left doesn't say enough. WHERE would we have expressed that glee?

haha first time I have been on here since the news and I just KNEW Yanks would be posting immediatly....

they knew this news would kill some of us (like me) so they gotta throw in comments now. I should go to a Yankee forum and throw in comments whenever something bad happens to them

Nah I won't sink to that level....you guys are lame!!!!

its not like I came here to rub it in, i was already here, this is a quality board.

...And you guys take it too serious, I was just being humerous about the whole situation.

Example1; good point, this is a Red Sox board...but you can't deny that the primary motive of attacking the Yankees IF Cashman had not resigned would have been to aggravate us Yankees fans here.

This wasnt about money, if it was then why were they on the verge of signing a deal? What happned two change that to stories in the globe one about Manny, the other attacking Theo. I think Theo said enough is enough, and quit.

Well, let's give him this offseason where he gets the most input, and let's see what happens.

I understand everyone's cranky about losing the GM, but just relax a little bit, k?

Eric Wilbur wrote a pretty good article

http://www.boston.com/sports/nesn/wilbur/sports_blog/blog/2005/10/31/epsteins_trick_is_on_the_red_sox/

He didn’t exactly chuck an egg at Larry Lucchino’s office door on the way out, but Theo Epstein might as well have.

The Halloween deadline turned out to be the biggest trick the Red Sox could have possibly expected from their former -- yes, I said former, as in past tense -- general manager. In a stunning move, Epstein announced this evening that he’s gone. Kaput. Finis. In any language, no matter how you pronounceit, it spells Lucchino.

“In my time as general manager, I gave my entire heart and soul to the organization,” Epstein said in a statement. “During the process leading up to today’s decision, I came to the conclusion that I can no longer do so. In the end, my choice is the right one not only for me but for the Red Sox.”

Now, the question will be asked time and again over the coming days: Is it that he no longer can do so, or would not be allowed to?

I can only imagine what the offices on Yawkey and Brookline are like tonight, a scattered group of folks wondering what in the hell just happened here in this organization. At best, this is a public relations disaster for John Henry and company. At worst, it could very well spell the end of their kind welcome through the six-state home base of Red Sox Nation, where they have been appreciated and celebrated since Day One.

Paul Konerko? Brian Giles? Forget about it. Manny Ramirez? As good as gone. Johnny Damon? I doubt it. With Theo Epstein gone, the day-to-day operations of this ballclub are in flux, at the time of the year when they need to be at their most active. By the time the Red Sox get a general manager in place willing to work under Lucchino, Boston will be lucky to get its hands on Kevin Millar again.

To his credit, Epstein will stay on for a few more days to aid with the transition. That will be a comfortable working environment, no?

Here’s the bottom line, folks: Epstein cared too much about putting a baseball team on the field. That was his undoing at an address where the latest real estate development plan was more important. Why be concerned about bullpen help when you’ve got blueprints on the table? Why give your general manager that $1.5 million he’s asking for when instead you can sink $200 million into renovation of a Howard Johnson’s?

The Red Sox are no longer the local baseball team. The Olde Towne Team no more. They are a monster business, attaching itself to any and every money-making opportunity that comes its way. Coming soon, Fenway Park-themed fast food restaurants. They are more "This Old House" than "This Week in Baseball" these days.

The Boston Red Sox have become an enormous marketing machine. Winning isn’t everything, but it sure does help them make more money.

It’s going to be wildly interesting over the next few days to see how the Red Sox treat this. It is certainly a minority out there that isn’t unhappy with what has transpired here this evening. And you have to wonder what Lucchino’s plan is for a new GM. Paul DePodesta? Pat Gillick? John (shudder) Hart?

In their world, the Red Sox are doing just fine, thank you very much, with or without Theo Epstein, the former boy wonder. Why, they bang out the ballpark every single night, and had the “conscience” only to raise ticket prices slightly in 2006, even though demand said they could go higher. They are talked about 10 times as much as the local football team, which happens to have had a pretty good run of its own of late. Think anyone is talking Peyton Manning in these parts until the weekend now? Forget about it.

But with all that success comes a price that this group has yet to suffer as of yet. Any bad PR on their part has come in small bunches here and there. They even survived the Nomar deal in good part because of the way Garciaparra had brooded in the preceding weeks, and the immediate hot stretch they hit. Well, the team isn’t playing anytime soon, and the Red Sox have nothing to take the Nation’s mind off this front office disaster.

Theo Epstein is gone, and the Red Sox are much worse off for it.

I’m sorry, I meant the Red Sox fans. The Red Sox are probably embroiled too deeply in their latest multi-million dollar development plan to really care about it all that much.

wow. I don't know what to say, simply stunned. I hope the Red Sox don't mail it in for 2006, as someone suggested. The rivalry is one of the most enjoyable things about watching baseball. Hell the Red Sox series in April was the only reason I even bothered to watch YES that early

btw, I can't believe that as it looks right now. Steinbrenner is easier to work with than Lucchino. Could this be another "No No Nannette" type deal?

If you are getting aggravated by RS fans on a RS board, shame on you.

If you are getting aggravated by RS fans on a NYY board, shame on them.

Theo's not irreplaceable, but the timing of this sucks.

I don't see a fire sale looming. Henry and Lucchino are very good businessmen, and they know that winning equals success in Boston.

That said, I don't know how far they are willing to go to field a winning team. Do they spend as little as possible to shoot for 90-93 wins and a WC spot, or do they field the strongest team they can?

The next few months will be very telling on that regard, especially the Manny/Wells trade requests. If they ship them off with little in return and are inactive in the FA/trade market, that would signal to me that they are interested in playing cheap youngsters and lining their pockets. If they drive hard bargains and obtain some young talent, then they are still interested in building a powerhouse for the future.

Exactly. But what the hell do you expect when you come to talksox.com? That's what I would expect if I went to spankyanks.com or whatever the site is and start laughing at their misery (it must be abbad board, cause you're here a lot). I don't expect a lot of s*** on this site, that's why I come here.

I appreciate you here though.

I think we all need to remember that we are part of RED SOX Nation ... Not THEO Nation. Sounds like some of you are ready for a revolt.

And to those of you picking a fight with the yankee fans ... chill out. They're not purposly trying to be ******* this time. Them simply posting anything in this topic would have got them s*** on. I think everyone needs to have a full nights sleep ... then get up in the morning and kill a kitten. It'll be OK.

I dont thikn we're screwed but i certainly think that theo is the reason for our good farm system and we sure as hell better continue building it.

screwed in a sense that the red sox from today have 9 days to find a GM, because starting on the 11th free agent players can go talking to other teams. Johnny Damon, Bill Mueller, Mike Myers, Chad Bradford, and Tony G being among those free agent players. Now instead of the main priority of 1st re-signing Damon, this will have to be set aside for finding a new GM which i hope is quickly resolved.

also we dont know if the new GM will or will not trade away the sox's prized "untouchable" prospects, most of whom mind you were selected and drafted by theo

my concern isn't getting a new one in good time, we will get a new GM and in good time too, im sure of it. My issue is that the new GM will trade away our prospects and won't draft like Theo. I love our farm system right now, and I love the prospects we have, i see trading one or two more touchable guys, but the untouchables better remain untouched.

What does it mean when Theo is going to stick around and take care of what needs to be done and attend the GM meetings? Is he still responsible for our direction the next several days or something??? This is too strange and I could see it blowing up in our face....lets think about this from Henry and Lucchinos position....

The team dealt with a tough drama filled season, key veterans have asked to be traded, fired a top trainer who the players loved, and now a Boston icon resigned in ugly fashion leaving the team to crunch things together

They better find some answers and fast

Yeah that seemed kinda weird.

boy: "we're breaking up, I'm dumping you"

girl: "are you still gonna fix the toilet and paint the room before you go?"

boy: "yeah why not"

:dunno:

BINGO, BINGO, sushi has BINGO!

This is exactly right. A GM change won't hinder this team's chances for future success as long as someone is brought in that fits into the system. IMO, the development of the farm system is an organizational philosophy, not the sole intellectual property of Theo Epstein. Bill James is still with the team, and the whole Moneyball/Billy Beane generation of young GMs were spawned by James' Baseball Abstacts.

That said, there was a power struggle involved in Theo leaving, and that basically means Theo didn't want LL's intrusion into all matters baseball. Were the higher-ups pushing to win now at the cost of later? The next couple of months will provide the answer.
