I think Pedroia spent most of the season in Pawtucket while Hanley spent most of the season in Portland, I think.

Yeah, Pedroia lit up AA, moved to AAA hurt his wrist and didn't get much action or get a chance to put up numbers.

When he was moved up to AAA in july or late june with Papelbon and Delcarmen, Hanley began playing second base at AA portland. I don't think he ever played center.

I agree with those who think Dayton Moore would be the best person to replace Theo. My question is what would that say to Hoyer, Cherrington, Shipley and the other guy? I think they will leave the organization because it wasn't one of them.

I think you're goofy, and so is your avatar. Goofy is cool though.

I don't think they would leave, and if it is dayton moore who gets the job, I think he would probably bring people over from the braves organization to fill those positions anyhow. But i dont know if they would leave on their own.

Interesting blog by Buster Olney....

“In conversation with folks in the game yesterday, this is what they hear: Theo Epstein, feeling great regret over walking away from the Red Sox job, sent feelers through channels to Boston ownership that he's interested in talking about coming back -- and so far, that overture has been rebuffed.

“You could understand John Henry's predicament in this. Ownership was extremely unhappy with the way Epstein handled his contract negotiations, according to others in the game, and then by leaving abruptly, Epstein helped to create a situation in which Larry Lucchino has been damaged and pounded in the court of public opinion. To bring back Epstein now, after all that has transpired, would be another blow to Lucchino, because it would create the perception that Epstein had won out in his request for a change in how some decisions are made within the front office.

“Henry could have solved this months ago, of course, if he had simply stepped in and brokered a solution between Epstein and Lucchino. But that's not his style.”

pretty interesting. I had a feeling he would regret it

god damn it. Dayton Moore who was fast on track as the top candidate to replace Theo as GM has taken himself out of the running according to Boston.com

No exact reason has been given

Jim Bowden of the Washington Nationals and Jim Beattie the former Orioles GM are the only 2 candidates left who have been interviewed. Hell no to Beattie!

Posted

Ehhh. Theo could still be back, but even if he's not, the Sox have almost 2 weeks to find somebody. Hell, Lucchino can still do the job or even one of the young guys.

I don't expect anything out of the Red Sox next year anyway (even if we keep Manny), so I don't think it's as big a deal as some of you.

I hope Damon comes back and I hope we get somebody for Wells. I don't want to see Manny go at all, but they will do what they want/can. I hope they give the kids a shot.

yeah, wells is not likely to be in boston at all. though signs were pointing to san diego, Wells to Arizona for Javier Vazquez is starting to stand out. Still a possibility of him deciding to retire.

Dodgers name Colletti GM

November 15, 2005

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) - Ned Colletti, who was the assistant general manager for the San Francisco Giants, was named GM of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. Colletti will be introduced at a news conference Wednesday. He replaces Paul DePodesta, who was fired two years into a five-year contract. Many names, including former Boston Red Sox GM Theo Epstein, were rumored to be heading to the Dodgers before owner Frank McCourt settled on Colletti, a 24-year front office veteran.

Colletti spent 11 years with San Francisco, the last nine as assistant GM. He began his professional baseball career with the Chicago Cubs in 1982, working in both the media relations and baseball operations. The Dodgers finished 71-91 - their worst finish since 1992 - and parted ways with manager Jim Tracy after the season. Now with a GM in place, Los Angeles will look to fill its vacant managerial post.

there are now 2 teams left without a certain GM for the 2006 season: Red Sox & Nationals

Actually I wouldn't mind having Lucchino take over the operation. Just because he would hold the title does not mean he would come up with the baseball moves. The Gang Of Four or whatever they are called are all smart and can deal with that. Its clear that those guys working together would report to Luccino hence there is no struggle. Instead of hiring Bowden or Beattie (neither who I'm excited about) the Red Sox current front office can take care of this themselves. Basically they are just missing Theo but there are plenty of other good minds in the organization.

I think it's down to a Gang of Three, since Peter Woodfork has left for Arizona. Shipley, Hoyer and Cherington aren't deep in experience, but Bill Lajoie is back and can help guide them. I don't think the Sox have a choice here. They obviously don't like Bowden and Beattie, since there was no second interview. What a mess.

I don't know if there would be a second interview would there? I mean i think the door could still be open to either of those two, I think they're just in no rush to get this done. I like Bowden very very much. He is the kind of GM who given the soxs's budget can keep the farm system in good shape and put a competitive team on the field at the major league level. He's a guy who I wouldn't mind at all. Beattie I don't know enough about.

But here we go again with those theo coming back rumors.

Does anyone else that none of the top assistant GMs in baseball are interested in a promotion with more money and more power to become the sox new GM? Throw in the fact that our own bright assistant left for another job when he was the obvious guy to turn to if Theo left and its amazing how little interest there is to be the sox GM.

Another candidate

By David Lefort, Boston.com staff

The Red Sox announced another candidate for their vacant general manager's position Friday afternoon: White Sox director of player development David Wilder. Sox officials, including CEO Larry Lucchino and Tom Werner, will interview Wilder on Saturday.

Wilder, who held positions with the Braves, Cubs, and Brewers before joining the White Sox in 2004, is expected to speak with the media after his interview on Saturday afternoon.

According to the Globe's Gordon Edes, Wilder played a significant role in building the World Series champion White Sox, urging GM Ken Williams to take a chance on Bobby Jenks and A.J. Pierzynski and Carl Everett, players who came with varying degrees of baggage.

Also according to Edes: Wilder would seem to have some appeal for Lucchino, who has shown a preference for talent evaluators.

Wilder will be the first minority candidate to be interviewed by the Red Sox. For more information on Wilder, check out his biography on the White Sox' web site.

Hey YankeesSuck, glad to finally be on board, but I can tell you that I am getting a little fed up with all this time elapsing and still no GM. I mean the winter meetings are about to be held and we need someone in charge so we can get down to the business at hand of signing some of our free agents and going after the players we need to compete next season. Hopefully, we'll get something done by next week.

Why do people think there is something wrong with bowden? Hes a good candidate, I'd take him over Wilder, but I do like Wilder a lot as well. Beattie, yeah, I don't like him. I'll give you that one, he went to dartmouth and they rejected me, so ill reject him.

I agree with ksushi. Bowden besides the guzman signing was great. He got Guillen cheap from the halos and made some important trades near the deadline.
Posted
Beattie, hell no. This is the guy who was GM of the Expos and traded ace pedro away for carl pavano, look what he got and led the Expos to... And lets see the Orioles, where have they gone in his tenure, really nowhere. His signings for them have included Sammy Sosa, Rafael Palmeiro and the drunk Sydney Ponson.

I know, and I agree with you. I don't like beattie, i dont think many people do. I do like Bowden. I think hes a good candidate. I would take him or wilder in a heart beat.

I dont know why the hell Beattie is leading the GM list. Where did the Expos go with him as the General Manager?? Nowhere. The Orioles?? Nowhere. He lacks the knowledge of what players are best suited to be on the team. Sydney Ponson turned out to be a stubbling drunk who was released by the team after getting arrested again which was for drunk driving, Rafael Pameiro well we know what happened, then the trade for has-been Sammy Sosa.

Like "CityofChampions" had said, I would be perfectly fine with this season being managed by a GM by Committee or one of the guys from within being promoted.

Posted
I'm not overly concerned. Beattie's not a good choice, but I'll be shocked if he gets any autonomy. The current supporting cast (scouts, analysts, etc.) will continue to do the good job that they have already done, directives will come from Lucchino and above, and Beattie will get the job of being the public face of the Red Sox FO for all personnel issues.
