Well I dont really think that we learned anything from that PC. I found John Henry's comments about maybe he shouldnt be the principle owner intresting. He seems to be jumping on the grenade for LL, as well.

WEEI reported that Henry spent all night trying to turn Theo around. Theo revealed all the things that weren't the reasons for leaving. More puzzling and depressing than the day before.

Theo you bastard, how many posts is enough? 1000? 1000000? c'mon man, we need you...what the heck were you thinking? Only the Red Sox...

HAHAHAHA this one cracked me up. #1115

Man he sure said a whole lot of nothing today didn't he?

Doesnt look lie Towers is going anywhere

Scratch Padres general manager Kevin Towers from the list of possible candidates for the Red Sox's and Dodgers' GM openings.

Towers informed Padres chief executive officer Sandy Alderson on Thursday morning that he will not pursue either position, preferring to stay in San Diego.

"The relationships I have with people are very important to me," Towers said. "I just felt like this is where I need to be right now at this point in time in my life. I really feel like I should honor the contract that I have and hopefully finish it out."

Towers, signed through 2007 with a team option for '08, had surfaced as a possible successor to Theo Epstein in Boston; he worked successfully under Red Sox president Larry Lucchino when the two were together with the Padres.

Numerous baseball executives also have speculated that Towers wants to leave the Padres because of Alderson's growing involvement in baseball matters. Towers, however, dismissed talk of increasing friction between him and Alderson, who joined the Padres on April 19.

Asked about his relationship with Alderson, Towers said, "it's a good one, a really good one."

"The perception out there is that we can't co-exist. That's not true at all," Towers said. "I enjoyed working with him this year, I really did. If it was bad and I wasn't happy, I certainly would be looking to go other places. I'm not just blowing smoke. I respect the man a great deal."

Towers interviewed with the Diamondbacks for their GM opening last month, only to lose out to Josh Byrnes. But he says he pursued that position only because of Phoenix's proximity to San Diego and the chance of gaining greater security.

"With Arizona, at that point in time, I felt that maybe I could get more long-term security for my family," Towers said. "But after going through the process and being able to reflect on things, I came to realize it's not just about money or years, it's about being happy, being around people you want to be around. I want to stay here."

Towers has spent 22 of his 24 years in professional baseball with the Padres. He started as a right-handed pitcher in the organization, then became a scout, scouting director and GM.

could theo's new job have people call him "Mr. President"?

Theo may not settle just for GM position

By Jeff Horrigan

Friday, November 4, 2005 - Updated: 06:20 AM EST

With several organizations extending feelers through intermediaries, it appears former Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein may not be out of work for long, if he so chooses. Epstein, whose contract with the Sox expired on Monday, contemplated taking some time off before looking for further employment, but potential employers appear poised to find him first.

Epstein could not be reached for comment, but he is believed to be mulling a scenario that would result in him hooking on with another team in an advisory role for a year before returning to a full-time position after next season. However, several sources throughout Major League Baseball indicated yesterday that he could be offered a position above GM in another organization. The sources say Epstein could land the position of president for one of the ownership groups seeking to purchase the Washington Nationals, or with the Los Angeles Dodgers or even the Texas Rangers. Epstein could get a job offer similar to that of the Detroit Tigers’ Dave Dombrowski, who is the team’s president and general manager.

Meanwhile, it’s no secret that the Dodgers made contact through an intermediary earlier this week about their vacant GM job, but Epstein relayed word that he didn’t plan to entertain any offers until next week because he felt a responsibility to help the Sox’ baseball operations staff prepare for the upcoming general managers’ meetings in California. The Red Sox are expected to be represented by Epstein’s former assistants: Jed Hoyer, Ben Cherington, Peter Woodfork and Craig Shipley.

However, once the meetings begin Monday, the former GM is expected to entertain calls or visits from/with other teams. Epstein, who said that he is comfortable taking a year off, said he will at least listen before making any decisions. Epstein made it clear during Wednesday’s press conference at Fenway Park that he is not burned out and that he plans to find work soon, preferably within the game. “I am not burned out,” he said. “I have tremendous passion for the game. I have a tremendous dedication to the game. . . . I work hard, but I enjoy it and I’m not all burned out.”

Meanwhile, another scenario would be if Larry Beinfest becomes a serious candidate for Dodgers GM, it would open up the GM position with the Florida Marlins. The Colorado Rockies may also be eying Epstein for a leadership position. Those aren’t the only possibilities. Former Sox assistant GM Josh Byrnes was named GM of the Arizona Diamondbacks last week, while Toronto Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi and Oakland Athletics GM Billy Beane are all close friends of Epstein’s, which could lead to a consultant position of some sort before he seeks another GM job.

If none of those come through, the New York Mets could even seek him out as an adviser or television analyst. “Theo is likable enough and bright enough that he can handle anything,” another GM said last night.

this guy sounds like he'd be a good fit. He has a good knowledge of maintaining the farm system which would be a big plus here.

If the Sox were to go with a longtime baseball man, one name that could surface is Mike Arbuckle, the Phillies' 55-year-old assistant GM for scouting and player development. Lucchino interviewed Arbuckle in 2002 before Epstein was hired. Arbuckle was a hot commodity at the time, also interviewed for openings in Pittsburgh and Toronto. Under his watch Philadelphia has developed several top prospects, including Scott Rolen and most recently Ryan Howard. With Philadelphia's hiring of Pat Gillick as GM, Arbuckle could be looking to move out of the organization.

Here's a piece from ESPN's Page 2 by Jim Caple...I think this article puts this whole ordeal in perspective, come on folks it's just one guy leaving (well, for now at least!). Yeah, I liked the guy, but it truly is NOT the end of the world.

Yes, his departure is sad but at least we're finally learning the true story behind the Red Sox's success. For a long time, I was under the impression it was David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez who hit all those home runs, and Curt Schilling and Pedro Martinez who pitched all the games, and Jason Varitek who caught all those pitches. But now I understand that it was all Theo. And he's leaving! No wonder Red Sox Nation is grieving

at the time renterria was signed, hanley was experimenting mostly in center field--the course of this season he had shifted over to 2nd base than shortstop

I know there was speculation hanley would move to center just because he is such a great athlete, but i didn't know he ever actually saw anytime in center, i thought it was purely speculation.

Sox name candidates

By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff

The Red Sox have announced their first two interviews in the GM search. Jim Beattie, the former Expo GM who was part of the two-headed disaster in Baltimore, and Jim Bowden, the Weston native who thrilled Washington by keeping the Nationals in the NL East race for much of the season, will interview for the job. The Sox have contacted two other prospective candidates but their names have yet to be announced.

I keep reading about the sox all wanting to get theo back. PLEASE get him back. It is like losing David Ortiz two years ago when he was asking for only 5 million or whatever. You SHOULD be willing to pay three times that much.

yeah i think ksushi is right, i didnt know he ever got anytime at second either. isnt he on the same team as pedroia?

I think Pedroia spent most of the season in Pawtucket while Hanley spent most of the season in Portland, I think.

im not so sure about the Orioles former GM Jim Beattie as the guy to take over Theo's job. He was with the Orioles for 4 seasons, and look where they had gone during his tenure. Also this is the same GM from the Expos who traded away Pedro to Boston in return for Carl Pavano.

My top pick is Dayton Moore from the Braves, he oversees the minor league system, and we all know how good that system is.
