Word is that Theo just quit and is cleaning out his desk. According to WEEI.

Yea, and he just agreed to become the Yankees' assistant GM replacing Jean Afterman :)

Well, this does suck. But you know what? Good for Theo. It seems all the ******** that has been talked about (and pretty well known) is true.

It takes some serious balls to walk away from over 4 million dollars.... I can't wait to see what Henry does.

Theo walks away from Sox

By Michael Silverman

Monday, October 31, 2005 - Updated: 05:28 PM EST

Theo Epstein stunned the Red Sox and the baseball world this afternoon by walking away from his job as general manager. Just hours before his deal was set to expire at midnight, Epstein told his bosses and associates at the Red Sox’ Yawkey Way offices that he had decided not to accept a three-year deal worth $1.5 million a year, an extension for the contract he signed on Nov. 25, 2002.

Epstein had done some agonizing soul-searching the past few days, torn between staying at the job he had always coveted since his childhood days in Brookline and leaving because of intra-organizational politics and power struggles that he ultimately decided he could not live with any longer. Money and length of the contract were not issues in the past few days for Epstein, who had lobbied hard for an annual salary of more than $1 million a year. Epstein had come close to agreeing to a deal Saturday evening but had not officially conveyed acceptance of it.

On Sunday, he began having serious misgivings about staying on. A leading contributing factor, according to sources close to the situation, was a column in Sunday’s Boston Globe in which too much inside information about the relationship between Epstein and his mentor, team president and CEO Larry Lucchino, was revealed -- in a manner slanted too much in Lucchino’s favor. Epstein, according to these sources, had several reasons to believe Lucchino was a primary source behind the column and came to the realization that if this information were leaked hours before Epstein was going to agree to a new long-term deal, it signaled excessive bad faith between he and Lucchino.

Epstein had not made up his mind about accepting the job before going to bed Sunday night, this despite a report in the Boston Globe, citing multiple major-league sources, that Epstein and the Red Sox had agreed to a contract extension. The Globe’s parent company, the New York Times, holds a 17 percent ownership stake in the Red Sox.

Watch Beane trade Zito to Boston for a bag of balls then bolt Oakland for the Sox a week later.....I would be pretty upset (as would Bud, who would probaby void the deal)

Just more proof that baseball business is weird. If I had been told that Cashman would be staying in New York and Theo would be leaving Boston, earlier this season, I would have laughed my head off.

swap of GMs could be in store

its now looking like the #1 candidate to be GM of the Sox is ex-Dodgers GM DePodesta. And the Dodgers owned by Boston native McCourt will sure to be calling up Theo.

on CBS however its being reported Kevin Towers from san deigo is appearing to stand out more as likely to come to Boston...

Contrary to earlier reports, Theo is declining the three year extension and stepping down as GM of the Red Sox.

Un-f***ing-believable.

Discuss.

The thing that's worst about this TO ME is that his line of thinking was VERY in line with what I wanted to see from the team - developing a moneyball approach but with the resources to really maximize everything (ie Oakland with cash). Developing YOUNG players in the minor leagues, signing highly productive role players NOT overpriced all stars, and that kind of thing.

I am frightened to death at the prospect of that line of thinking no longer being the dominant philosophy, ESPECIALLY with Byrnes now leaving for the DBacks job. The last thing I want is Duquette again.

Let us all kneel down and pray that they hire another guy who wants to keep the farm system as a dominant force for filling the big league team. I mean all this talk of free agents and s*** - enough already... there are ALREADY plenty of guys in the minors who can step up and (say in the bullpens case) fill our holes - do it for cheap, and frankly probably do it better.

Argh - so upset.

I don't see why not - he got absolutely f***ing ramrodded by the Dodgers - they are so friggin stupid. I'd love to se Depodesta here... I think he's a lot like Theo... I don't care really, cause Theo had his flaws and certainly wasn't perfect... its just the PHILOSOPHY I want to keep going, not necessarily the personnel in the front office. Depodesta would do that, and I think he's a very good GM who just was a sacrificial lamb for the dodgers.

I consider this to be very bad news, and I arbitrarily blame Lucchino.

I had dillusions of Theo staying as the Red Sox manager till he was an old man... it was probably silly... but now I'm going to wish him the best in whatever he does.

Run for House of Representatives Theo!

Ahhhh. The spin zone has started.

According to Gammons on ESPN, "Theo hated the limelight.""He's a private person." "It's not Lucchino who leaked to the Globe." Here we go now.

I give it 2 days before the real mud starts getting thrown around by the Red Sox.

This is unreal, the sox should have given Theo Cashmen money, Theo brought us a championship, and a rejuventated farm system. Larry Luchino is a ******** along with Dan Shaunessy.. this sucks so bad
