This is unreal, the sox should have given Theo Cashmen money, Theo brought us a championship, and a rejuventated farm system. Larry Luchino is a ******** along with Dan Shaunessy.. this sucks so bad

I would have payed him more than Cashman

I just belive Theo didnt leave because of the money but because LL set up the Globe article. No matter how much money he as given if LL is going to leak s*** about Theo why should he stay.

I have a source who is very close to Theo Epstein, and when they talked this afternoon, he basically summed it up as this:

He's won a World Series, he's made a bunch of money, he's become slightly well known, he's dated a model, he's lived his lifelong dream, and he's just ready to move on.

I believe this also means with baseball, not just with the Red Sox. It clearly had nothing to do with the money...1.5 million a year is top of the line GM money, it may have something to do with Lucchino, bottom line is, this was Theo's decision, and I respect him for it. It was obviously a tough call, but the Sox will move on from this...eventually. I know that I, along with the rest of the RSN, are devastated by this news, but they will find a replacement.

I don't know if this has been posted, but here is Theo's statement.

First, I want to thank John Henry, Tom Werner, and Larry Lucchino for the opportunity to serve as General Manager for the last three seasons. Their support and friendship mean a lot to me, and I wish them all well. I also owe a debt of gratitude to the players, Terry Francona, the coaching staff, the front office, the baseball operations staff, and the fans for making my Red Sox experience so meaningful.

Growing up in the shadow of Fenway Park, I never dreamed of having the chance to work for my hometown team during such an historic period.

My decision not to return as General Manager of the Red Sox is an extremely difficult one. I will always cherish the relationships I developed here and am proud to have worked side-by-side with so many great people, in and out of uniform, as together we brought a World Championship to Boston.

In my time as General Manager, I gave my entire heart and soul to the organization. During the process leading up to today's decision, I came to the conclusion that I can no longer do so. In the end, my choice is the right one not only for me but for the Red Sox.

My affection for the Red Sox did not begin four years ago when I started working here, and it does not end today. I will remain on the job for several days as we finalize preparation for next week's general managers meetings. Thereafter, I will make myself available to the organization to ensure a smooth and stable transition.

My passion for and dedication to the game of baseball remain strong. Although I have no immediate plans, I will embrace this change in my life and look forward with excitement to the future.

they offered him $4.5 million/3 season deal ($1.5 million a season) which wouldve made him one of the most paid GMs. this had nothing to do with money but the atmosphere he had with larry luchino and john henry in the F.O.

Well they is no way we get Damon back now, absoulutly no way.

i agree 100%. In a recent inreview Damon was quoted as "I hope Theo is here when I am able to negotiate coming back."

Why are FA's going to want to play here if this teams own front office leaks stories and smears it's own people in the press?

how severly will this affect the sox chances of resigning Damon i read somewhere that Boras told the Red Sox to get Theo's contract done so they could make a deal for Damon but i dont see that happening now

 damn that sucks for you guys. Sorry.

too bad you don't have any class

back on topic theo is truly a class act as evidenced by this statement...." I will continue to work with the organization for several days to assist in an orderly transition and to prepare further for the upcoming GM meetings and other offseason activities.

Yeah i dont see that happening however, i doubt Larry Luchino will see much of Theo ever agian

I still cant believe Theo is gone, he helped us get over the hump, and made it possible for good things to come in the future, my worry is that a new G.M will trade away our young talent and i now see Tito's days in Boston numbered, maybe even this offseason now that Theo is gone, or if the sox get of to a slow start Tito will be gone

Well how long til we get the new GM in place? a week or 2 maybe

I'd guess longer.

It will be some young scrub who will probably ship Papelbon off for BK Kim. No established GM will work for Lucchino.

I don't even know what to say. I'm completely stunned. Just yesturday I thought Theo would sign this deal and be with the Red Sox for life. I ... I don't even know what to say. This sucks beyond belief.

Even if the Steelers win 150-0 tonight it wont make up for any of this.

Personally, I don't think It will be that hard to find another GM. There are 5 GM jobs that everyone in Baseball aims for the Yanks, Red Sox, Dodgers, Cards and Cubs. Theo is walking away from one of those jobs and 1.5 mil a year to do that job. I think he should count his blessings that he even got the job at 28 w/ basically no baseball back round. I wish him luck on his next job. We will miss him but not as much as everyone thinks.

does anyone else thinks this will serve as an excuse to absolutely clean house (read: trade manny, lose johnny, and make several other trades to get younger and mail it in for 06) ???

good point...thanks Larry ;)

...but seriously now, what a f***ing surprise, im just waiting for, like YS said, them to come out and say "tricked ya" or something like that. This is crazy.

what complete bs! f***ing Lucchino can't get out of the way from his own goddamn ego. He never won s*** in San Diego, came to Boston, won a WS, and now he's the s***.

The only reason he changed his mine was he was tired of the bs involved in dealing with Lucchino's power trip. BTW, you do not want depo, I wouldnt wish that laptop tinkering, pencil pushing beane wannabe on anyone, not even yankee fan. he may have been the sacraficial lamb for the worst dodger season in over a decade, and 3 weeks in the search for a new manager isnt ideal timing, but hell, better late than never!

Ya know... If this ever turned out to be a surpreme Halloween trick by MLB, I would have a renewed respect for life. As it is now, I just want to kill myself.

Right, I'm sure you guys would have been devastated if Cashman left for Philly.

I apologized, I knew it was wrong. But that's how I honestly feel right now, I enjoy the Red Sox being in chaos.

But you guys are screwed.

HEY LUCCHINO: f*** YOU!!

I don't give a rats ass who is responsible but I am so goddamned sick and tired of this s***. What do they think sox fans are made of? Huh?!?? Should we just be happy with losing player after player, losing the heart of our team? I said last week and I'll say it again now: the one thing that made losing all of these players okay was the fact that Theo was watching out for it all.

We are going to have another GM. GM's aren't hard to find. Excellent GM's, CELEBRITY GM's. They are harder to find.

And for those of you who say that this wasn't about money, it was about money. If Theo didn't want to be GM because of personal reasons he wouldn't have been at the negotiating table to begin with. He would have said long ago that "This job isn't for me, I will finish up, but this isn't where I want to be."

I am very, very close to boycotting the red sox right now. If they trade Manny I probably won't buy the baseball package next year. Who the hell am i paying to see? Nomar? Pedro? Manny? Damon? These people are viewing all of us as sheep-like idiots who follow whatever they put in the sox uniform.

This totally and utterly ruined my evening. If you were willing to pay Billy Beane 2.5 million then pay THEO EPSTEIN THE GODDAMN 2.5 MILLION! If you're willing to pay Alan Embree 3 million a year then you better pay theo his funds.

Close to a boycott. sorry for the language, I'm just pissed off!!!!!
