  1. SSS alert, but Wong and Narvaez had similar OPSa despite Narvaez being Crochet's main catcher.
  2. This is really imprecise, but a necessary part of the equation. Guys like Alonso & Bregman are just good players. Guys like Judge, Ohtani, etc., play on a much higher level. Same with guys like Skubal, Skenes, etc. I'm paying a good bit more $$$/WAR for the truly elite guys,
  3. In real life, I will lock in any service where I think I am getting a good deal, at any price. And some extensions need not be long and major contracts either. We locked in Duran for two years. That seems to have worked out fine. Because of the cantankerous nature of arbitration, I think I'd approach a lot of our kids with an offer. Just using Durbin as an example, he's never going to get rich, since he will be 32 on his first FA contract. I see nothing wrong with guaranteeing him $3-4M over his first three years, in exchange for him giving us options for the following three years. It would make financial sense and might help team chemistry.
  4. There is no reason to extend players, or not extend players. If Mayer wants too much, you go year-by-year. If Durbin was to give us a good deal, then you extend him. I don't think it's about the talent as it is about things like health, like how hard is he going to work after he gets paid off, about whether you think they can continue to grow.
  5. I'm unaffected by it. I care more about being right, and about as importantly, why I am wrong. IRT the WAR/$$$, because of the way players are paid, the model is not linear. The current salary structure pays veterans far better than they pay kids. The correct comparison for Montgomery would be other minimum wage players. The correct comp for Ceddanne is likely other young-ish players with long-term contracts. The correct comp for Crochet is likely other FAs. There are always some cross-over, but you can never compare a high-priced FA, like Alonso for example, to a 3rd year player like Busch for example, on a WAR/basis.
  6. If this was real life, I'd use 3%. If this was BB, I'd use 5% minimum, and have 6% in the back of my mind.
  7. I agree 100%. I'd extend him for Raffy's price tag.
  8. Sure. TBH, a lot of posters complain about people getting paid. But he had less than 600 career ABs at that point. Some posters felt like he hadn't proven himself. And the $340M/14 he received absolutely dwarfed Acuna's $100M/8 extension.
  9. That's as important a point as one could make. That and the fact that you are betting on character. When Tatis extended, a lot of people complained that $24.3M AAV was crazy high. That's not even AS money now, and ten years from now, it'll look closer to average-player salary.
  10. No extension is necessary. Waiting can save you or cost you money. I think Mayer is a more relevant discussion. If we extend him now, we make a much bigger gamble. But that's offset by the fact that he might sign at Ceddanne prices. If you wait until he proves himself, and he comes in with 20/20/.275 and good fielding numbers, then that price tag increases significantly. Anyone want to extend MM cheaply? I would.
  11. IMO, the conversation has gone sideways. There is no moral high-ground like something is good or something is bad. It's more like any FA contract you sign. You can like it or not like it, but there will always be some signings that work out great and some that work out badly. Currently, imvho, we are way ahead on Raffy, ahead on RA, slightly ahead on Bello, well ahead on Whitlock, and behind on KC. IRT to timing, imo, that's a 0-sum game. If you wait for 2 years, and the kid doesn't progress, smart move, you saved money. If the kid does progress, then bad move, you lost money. We didn't extend Abreu and lost money. We didn't extend Casas and saved money.
  12. Why are you comparing Montgomery, who will be lucky to start in AAA for the WS, to Raffy? And FG projects Monty for a 0.0 WAR.
  13. Nothing to do with Ohtani, but you should open up your statement each month and scan it for withdrawals. Even if you are dealing with the most reputable banks in the world, accounts do get hacked occasionally. And scanning your statements is a one-minute job requiring no financial sophistication.
  14. Monty still has a 5/0 K/W in ST. He has one HR, but I have no idea who he hit it against. In AA, he had 1 HR in 125 ABs, with 41 Ks. If it was me, I wouldn't even open him up in AAA.
  15. So, just using random numbers, if you thought you had $16,000,000 in your account, and you signed on and saw -0-, that would likely raise some issues for you?
  16. I wouldn't mind at all. Having Italy and Mexico move on is good for the sport overall.
  17. On here, sure. But you have to consider the universe of possible SP signings that the RS might've considered. I thought Monty + Snell was the way to go.
  18. Nothing better in the world (especially for Da Bears) than trading a king's ransom for the overall 1/1, and not even being sure who you want to draft. Tepper might be a brilliant guy, but you have to know when to stay in your lane.
  19. They should've signed: Burnes $210M/7 Monty $47M/2 Snell $137M/5 Walker $72M/4 Manaea $75M/3 Cobb $15M/1 Verlander $15M/1 Scherzer $16M/1 By my estimation, they'd have added a record of 24-34 last year, for a bargain basement price tag of $170M.
  20. I always assumed he'd take Romy's slot on the 26. He has serious bench value.
  21. You're being conned. I have a Nigerian prince that's going to pay me $52M (in gold), as soon as I send him $100 for customs. Hard to believe that people fall for these things. In the old days, when we had fax machines, a group of us would grab the scam E-mails on Monday morning to read them over coffee.
  22. Does Gasper have any shot? Good ST and a switchhitter.
  23. We have a much different team now, but I would still be interested in him.
