    That sounds like when Fred said his bare minimum last year was a 3B with an .850 OPS. I sometimes people make things up that 'sound' right, but really aren't.

    I think the were quoting Sherman, and that was a personal opinion. I'd be shocked if the NYY didn't offer Jazz a QO, and be shocked if Jazz accepted. He's a solid 3 bWAR player going on 29. He's a good candidate for a 4- or 5-year contract in the range of $60M++.

    I can see Contreras putting his arm around Marte, offering his condolences for whatever ails him, and telling that he is going to stuff him in the locker if he doesn't take the field.

    I was actually going to mention that Contreras might be the guy that keeps Marte in line. He can be intimidating, and low-key crazy (my daughter explained that to me when she fouled out the opposing center) is sometimes better than full-on crazy.

    That's what I want as well, if only to see heads explode when a team without HRs wins. And we'll get to about ten days of non-stop chatter about OBP, defense, and pitching.

    Absolutely no doubt he is a risk. Well ignore the fact that some in here wanted to trade Tolle and Early for him. But now he is available for close to nothing. The downside risk is already priced into his cost.

    Baez has a career 0.1 bWAR. And I don't normally pick prospects based on their neighborhood.

    It feels like some fans are ignoring the fact that we can spend logically, AND still a lot.

    A couple of years back, I castigated the Cardinals FO for having too many decent offensive players to make use of. Bloom got rid of a few of them, and I think they are better off for it. We need to do the same. I don't hate either Duran or Yoshi or Gasper, but the setup is clunky as heck. Figure out our starting 9 position players, plus 4 flexible bench players, and move on. Take the hit and rationalize the fit.

    I don't think many of these proposals are particularly wholistic. We might have an opportunity for an upgrade at SS, but we don't have a hole. We can't make a trade to upgrade one position, while opening up holes at two other positions. If the two choices are: Arias + Abreu + Bennett, or Elly + ??? + ???, then I'm betting on Arias ++. The argument might be that we can always sign FAs, but we could do that with mortgaging our future.

    I don't like moving GGs, but Paredes might be available with just one year of control left. Or as I mentioned elsewhere, now is the opportune time to go after Ketel. He was beloved last year. He is one year older, but should be a heck of a lot cheaper.

    Always happy to see the Dodgers lose. Now I can root for all three remaining teams.

    And I consider Crawford, Houck and Oviedo to be #6-7-8 SPs.

    Both. For Crochet, it is more health. For Tolle and Bennett, it's more such a small sample size to rely on. Suarez is health. Bello is more mental. There is no way on god's good earth to figure out what to expect from him. I'd love to commit to a one-inning opener for him and then 5-6 innings out of Bello. But everything with him is guesswork.

    Exactly my point, and has been forever. There is no single formula. My personal preference is a lineup that can hit 1-9. Never give a pitcher a chance for a breather by having a weak 7-8-9. My second favorite is more like Drewski. But instead of one slugger, you have two. But you always, always have to put guys on base in front of them. Papi & Manny were great. But when we won in 2004, Damon posted a .385 OBP out of the 1-hole. Bellhorn posted a .368 OBP from the 2-hole. This year, our OBP out of the 1-2 was .305. It's impossible to over-estimate what a huge difference that is.

    We're likely to be short on the rotation. Just my personal risk assessment: Crochet 20% Tolle 15% Suarez 20% Bennett 35% Bello 35% We need another SP.

    Maybe, maybe not. Based on his minor league numbers, I don't think 25 HRs with a .275-.285 is unreasonable.

    I don't think Schwarber was #1. Since the board has (finally) moved on from HRs to SLG, it is worth noting that Contreras had a higher SLG, in addition to his positional importance.

    Bonds was one of the worst playoff performers in history, until he wasn't.

    Bregman is 6-26 with -0- HRs in the past three years. I don't consider an issue.
