Many fans think a smart play is when the runner is successful, and a dumb play when they are not. In the play I earlier referenced, the runner tagged to go to 3rd where he could score on an out. That was the smart play. It didn't become stupid just because his slide pulled him off the base.
And had he not tagged up, the same people that criticized for tagging up, would have criticized him for not being aggressive enough.
Tatis was busted for PEDs. Had nothing to do with the press.
Henderson has the 3rd highest bWAR among SS's over the past three years, and the #7 overall highest fWAR.
Were you trying to be sarcastic?
24 hours ago, Monasterio had a .544 OPS and fans wanted him replaced by Cheng, et al. I believe someone suggested we play with only 25 guys on the roster. If he gets one more hit, fans will want him to bat cleanup.
And if he strikes out twice in the game, they will want him back in the minors.
That reminds me of the olde days, when the 'you know who's' would blame Tito for 'not making things happen'. Like making a bad move, just for the sake of making a move, ever winds up as a positive.
I think I agree. It kind of ruins the game a little if you bring in a position player every time you are down 10 runs. Theoretically, we could have Monasterio throw 3 innings, and instead of losing 10-0, we could lose 30-0.
I think there is hope for any of our bats to turn it around. Gut of the top infield FAs, which contract would you want:
Bichette -0.3 bWAR .581 OPS
Bregman 0.6 with a .736
Alonso 0.4 with a .685
Suarez -0.1 with a .663
These guys wouldn't move the needle compared to how poorly our own guys have done.
My point being is that it is not the outsiders who have made the negative difference. If Narvaez, Story, Duran and Anthony were hitting like they should, no one would even notice Durbin. The same with Crochet and Bello.
If SF could take it back, I'm fairly sure they would. Devers is notoriously streaky, but in his last 19 games, he has an awful, awful 28/2 K/W with 1 HR. 2nd worse fWAR right now, out of 182 qualified.
I told a lot of folks not to give up on Hammy. He is a high-end utility. Compare Hammy and Ceddanne on a per AB basis in 2024-25, and they are very similar players. Ceddanne with the better glove and Hammy with the great speed.
Having Bregman instead of Suarez adds 0.2 bWAR.
I doubt Mayer + Bello gets you Marte. And Marte's 0.4 doesn't make a huge difference.
Arias had 46 weak AA ABs before this season. There is no way we were going to replace Story with a guy barely out of A+.
H&H are okay backup guys, but haven't done anything special with Mil.
The .596 OPS isn't as MVP-ish as it seems. But he did a good job for us, so no reason to not expect a certain level of play. He had a 3.2 bWAR/162 games over the past two years.
