  1. This is just a continuing re-hash of personal favorites. It boils down to this: Half of us wanted a #2 and half wanted a good position player. Half of those that wanted a good position player, half wanted a decent+ glove, and half wanted to focus on hitting. Even among those that wanted a good hitter, some preferred pure power, and others wanted better all-around hitting. The idea of Breslow blowing it has as much to do with personal preference as anything else.
  2. I don't see an issue with Mayer. He's a highly-rated prospect that will face some challenges in his first full year. Almost every rookie does.
  3. That's why I'm not sure that's a problem. Williamson is a decent prospect, who is more glove than bat. They had Suarez and are likely to pass on re-signing him. They'd prefer the good, cheap long-term investment. That's identical to Mayer, and imo, the way that BB should work.
  4. That would be very counter-productive, imo. If the added net cost to acquire Suarez is $14M, I'd prefer to spend that on the BP.
  5. Most teams have guys under 100. Given that 100 is the expectation.
  6. Like I said, I see no problem finding a landing spot for Masa. You had mentioned Masa going to the NYMs in a Baty/Vientos trade. If Stearns balks because Baty/Vientos are his DHs, then Masa with a $30M check will look attractive.
  7. It's the risk, and same route, that every team and every prospect goes through. At one point, Duran could field or hit. Romy could hit, but couldn't catch the ball. Ceddanne had an eye-watering 10:1 K/W just one year ago. That's the price you pay for development.
  8. I think both trades are reasonable. But with two notes: With the NYMs rotation, they will either go after a legit #2, or no SP at all. Much like us, they have the #4/5/6/7 slots covered. If we did the Duran/Hicks move, I doubt we'd sign Suarez. He might get some platoon time with Baty at 3rd, but he would start. And at DH, Masa probably still gets all the ABs against righties. Suarez is too expensive to be a 300 AB player.
  9. That's reasonable. But there are a fair amount of us that would've ranked that #2 SP, big bat, then 2B/3B. What we've done so far works well for that population. So long as we get the 2B/3B, then the difference between the two POVs will be negligible.
  10. That's my guess. I think that, if we were only interested in capping payroll, we wouldn't signed Suarez. Suarez is the guy you sign when you think you can go far.
  11. That's why people move to Florida. If someone wanted to snort coke off the back of an alligator, I think I'd fund the purchase just to what happens.
  12. Too many people don't understand the value of deferrals. Like 40% object to owners giving them and 40% object to the players getting them. To me, it isn't much more than one of us buying an annuity.
  13. This is one of the more interesting recommendations. It just seems like a tough fit to interest someone in a player that is definitely an improvement to their OF/DH, but maybe not a perfect fit. Does Bazzana have enough minor ABs to be ready for the pros? This could be KC Act II. As always, Bazzana is a lefty. And finally, how often does a team trade a 1/1, unless they are a complete flop? Moniak was the only one I could find, and he had 5 minor league seasons by that the time he was traded. That said, if Bazzana needs 2 months of AAA, starting DHam in a platoon won't hurt us. And so long as we can make a good deal, the fact he is a lefty won't bother me much. Good article.
  14. What's the one-year calculation for Mize? I'm not a fan of Arroyo, but just for comparison purposes, I'd never consider trading Arias for one year of Mize. If the upside for Mize is a 3.0 WAR, then his excess value is maybe $24M. Just imho.
  15. I'd bet on his being our starting SS post-Story, but part of that (as Notin points out above) is because of cost. Having a league-average starter, at minimum wage, at any position is hugely important.
  16. I was exaggerating for effect. But I'd surely guess that the reaction was far more negative than positive.
  17. Good point. Bloom looks like he a) rationalizing the roster, and b) rebuilding. It'll be interesting to see if Wetherholt starts immediately, or if they wait until he passes the service time requirement.
  18. A lockout was baked in as soon as the owners smartened up that they couldn't leave the timing of a strike to the players. Smart move, but it took way too long for them to figure it out. And I think the narrative is that both the owners and the players are pure as the driven snow, and have nothing but the fans' interest at heart. And both sides are still concerned about putting food on the table. I'm guessing that both sides will wait until March 31, incur the ire of fans from both sides, to sign a deal that was 99% complete on February 28.
  19. IMO, guys like that are better off kept. Yoshi should hit, so that's not a problem except for fit. I'd prefer to see how Hicks does in ST rather than eat 80% of his salary. We had Newcomb, who went from one of the worst 5-year stretches in BB to good enough for a $4.5M contract. Keller went from a 5.84 with us, to a 2.07 with the Cubs, to a $22M/2 contract with Philly. We should see what Hicks has before we make a rash decision.
  20. One of the things that sparked my original response is that I'm not sure Suarez will materially out-perform Yoshi. BR gives Suarez a 20-point advantage, but FG gives Yoshi a 23-point advantage. A righty is better than a lefty but if the payroll nets to -0- between the two, I'd rather get a prospect rather than have the NYM pick up Yoshida's salary.
  21. Anything is possible. When Bay was leaving, I was 100% convinced that the RS were going to offer him just enough to look competitive, but not enough for him to sign. And I say that as a big Bay fan.
  22. I'm done. In fact, so long as Drew doesn't bother to reference me, I have absolutely no reason to reference him.
  23. I thought you weren't allowed to talk to me:) Past that, I'd say those results were similar to what I published. HRs are useful; OBP is better.
  24. If we get Paredes or Baty in a Duran trade, there is probably a -0- chance we get Suarez. Masa will get 100% of the ABs against lefties righties. You won't sign a $20M player to be the short end of a platoon.
