  1. I don't think that's quite right. Any asset is only a plan at a given price; not at any price. My plan is to retire with beachfront property in the Hamptons, but only if it costs less than $1M.
  2. Cots has us at $260.6. We have plenty enough to land Suarez.
  3. I thought everyone in Texas spoke Spanish?
  4. Numbers have no meaning in Fred's world.
  5. Yes. Stockholders of a corporation typically share equally in the profits and losses.
  6. pressure will mount and ratchet up for the 24-year-old southpaw to live up to his former top prospect billing. The pressure on Harrison isn't changed one iota with the Hicks. No one in the world is saying 'oh no, now Harrison has to succeed'.
  7. If I were the RS, I'd spend a whole lot of time trying to make him a decent 2B. I have a friend that is a real baseball person, and thinks it can be done. He's usually right on on-the-field issues. At the fit is absolutely perfect.
  8. Do we have any prospects, besides Arias, that qualifies as a middle-infielder? And I mean someone that looks like they have a reasonable shot at being decent+? I don't see any, and that guides my decision as to whom to pursue. Assuming we have no one, then Shaw makes a lot more sense than Hoerner, even if we have to pay up.
  9. Here is my usual analysis. There is $10M on the table. If you guess right, you get the $10M. If you guess wrong, you get -0-. Was Ohtani involved? I don't need a split second before answering yes, and I'd be absolutely shocked if I was wrong.
  10. I studied 3 years of French, and couldn't hold a simple conversation. So everyone in America should learn English. But most will never become fluent. And kind of related to this, I've heard that some players don't want to address the press in their second language. I'll actually try to speak Spanish at the Dominican place I use to visit pre-Yankee games. But it was never going to be more than a polite chatter.
  11. Just backing up a little, was he incorrect? I'm an agnostic on Devers, but one could easily argue that 1B is one of the easier positions to replace.
  12. I agree. No one ever says it, but I'd bet that Devers was probably a little embarrassed about his fielding, and embarrassed even more so that he lost his 3B job, and Fenway is the last place in the world you to make errors at 1B. It's would've taken three games before fans started booing him. I know the answer is to improve your fielding, but the reality is that he just didn't. Betts, OTOH, could've been the pilot on the plane ride home.
  13. I thought he'd get more like $12M/2 from a team like the Rox.
  14. Not a fan of Arraez, but had he been a righty, he'd have been worth considering.
  15. While some credit should go to Bloom for providing a fair amount of assets, Breslow's record has been quite good. Fitts, Weissert, Slaten, O'Neill, Narvaez, Chapman, Crochet, some good drafts. Lost on Sale & Buehler.
  16. He's not. If we hit a hard injury, and are out of it, and Suarez starts off great, maybe. But it would almost certainly never happen.
  17. That's going to be as good as it is going to get. That or Paredes. Vientos will be about the same as Yoshida. Baty will be the big bat that the big-bat fans want. But the underrated aspect, imo, would be that we have a perfect slot for Casas when he gets healthy. Take some lefty ABs from Vientos and Contreras, and allows Vientos back up 3rd (somewhat painfully). And the savings allow us another BP arm, and some spending money at the deadline.
  18. Fair enough on the calculations, but it was there to show you we are 6th in spending.
  19. On a s/t contract like this, I'm betting Suarez is looking for money, and maybe a WS ring, more than stability. I think his stability days are over. And I doubt Breslow is trading him for a RP and eating salary.
  20. On the first, I agree. But that's why you throw in Masa, or Hicks, or the Mets throw in Vientos or something else. On the second, I could trade Abreu, but prefer to trade Duran. Duran was fine in CF, kind of like Ellsbury. But I find him painful to watch in LF. That said, watching him run the bases is truly joyful. Line drives straight at the CF, and then watching the CF have to hustle to keep him to a single is remarkable. But one should really go.
  21. If we acquired Skenes for Yoshida, Fred would say we only did it to dump salary.
  22. I didn't realize that you didn't have access to the internet. Try this one: https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/cots/
  23. No yet, but he added a good bat in Contreras. And I expect one more bat that will improve us over what we had at 2B last year. 4 positions to think about from last year. We only had 3 positions that were worse than league average: Catcher sOPS+ of 87. That's almost entirely due to Wong's 48. Narvaez had a 108. I expect Wong to improve, and my guess is that we land at 100. 1B with an 84. Contreras should be a huge improvement over that. 2B with a 97. We had a .670 last year. Using Mayer as a 2B should yield a .703 and push us over 100. At 3B, adding someone like Paredes or Baty will keep us over 100. And Yoshida should be roughly league-average DH. IMVHO, as we stand right now, we will have a better than average OPS. If we acquire Paredes or Baty, we should be in the top-11.
  24. That seems impossible. Most trades will get a yes from one side or the other, unless it is a bad fit. But the RS need a 2B/3B, and the Mets need another outfielder. One of us should do this eagerly.
  25. My question is more along the lines of why we would want to pay for Suarez when we already have Masa. A right instead of a lefty, and occasionally fill in at 3rd is good. But not worth $20M. If Masa, Suarez and Mayer do exactly as projected, then Suarez gets 220 ABs.
