    This is not directed at you or anyone else. But we have a 4.7 bWAR CF now that some would like to move. Duran had a career -0.8 bWAR at that time. I cannot imagine the reaction Duran would've gotten.

    IMHO, they should keep up with player inflation. You can shade it on both sides, depending on your assessment of your chances, but if you spent $200M 10 years ago, your hypothetical spending should be maybe $200M * (1.04^10), or $296M.

    It always depends on how we address the IF hole, and how we spend the money. We likely won't know for a while how this will pan out. A lot of fans want to contenders every year. I agree. But you can't do that if you overpay too often. Just for fun: 2019 LAD $210M 2026 $572M including CBT 2021 Phillies $209M 2026 $363M 2021 NYM $207M 2026 $420M You either have to be careful, or you're going to have hope for an owner with unlimited spending capacity.

    Or, you won't be able to tell until his contract is over. According to back-of-the-envelop calculus, Bregman was worth $125M/5. If that model holds up, then it was right to not sign him. Whether Breslow was sputtering, aloof, perfectly coherent or anything else, won't matter.

    Just a couple of things. I think every FO has a combination of scouting and models, and that's probably true of every sport. My personal, and untested, theory is that if you get rid of long-term free agents you have signed, halfway through the contract, you will almost always be right.

    You don't usually do that without a better sub or an older guy. Casas was 23 and Devers 26.

    I thought that was a great get. A top 30-40 prospect. He had a 2.9 bWAR with LA the previous season. He stepped in with a 2.2 in 201 ABs with us. Played a good LF. He looked like a 5-tool with 4 years left. After his first year, I'd have extended him for sure.

    Fair enough. The way I see it, we have 12 automatics, plus Casas (IL), and either Eaton or Sogard. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say, "MY" preferred roster is one player away. Just imho, we are currently a playoff team, with 1st place aspirations. With the addition of someone like Paredes, particularly if we can keep Duran, then we are a 1st place team with aspirations of the WS.

    I see no issue. I see something that could become an issue, but right now, we are exactly one player away from having our 26-man roster. With 6 weeks to go. And I'd bet that Breslow has some parameters set on guys like Paredes, Baty, etc.

    I have no idea why this shouldn't be the default logic. Everyone has to have a number, even the real wealthy teams weren't go to pay Tucker $100M a year. Everyone in here has probably looked at a house or a car or a job, loved it, but decided the number was wrong.

    #3 is management's & owner's prerogative. But #1 & #2 are basically the same thing. We had a number, Bregman & the Cubs had a different number. So the RS used the Bregman money to land Suarez. That's what everyone in here has done at various points in their lives.

    I don't consider that close whatsoever. Marte has averaged 128 GS over the past five years, and only one seasons > 137 GS. There is a decent chance we only get 2 good years, 2 mediocre, and 3 poor years. And trading Mayer for an infielder does nothing to address our need for an infielder.

    It does matter. Even if you cannot afford to keep the talent, you can trade the talent, often for more long-term value. And even poorer teams can extend occasionally. MN, KC, CL, Athletics, Nats, Brewers, Pirates & Rox have all extended players. You have to be judicious on whom you extend, but you can do so successfully.

    The only way it works is if the players take a percentage of the gross, like FB or B-ball. If you get to that point, which could easily favor players, then chop TV revenues, and then it doesn't matter.

    He picked Mayer #1 in '21, Romero #1 in '22, and Teel #1 in '23, so I don't think he ignored defense, And two biggest problems, Devers and Casas, were already here.
