  1. I would love to have Encarnacion, but I think it would be a big mistake to sign him to a large contract. No one can replace Papi, not only in terms of his production, but also in terms of what he means to this team and to the young players. IMO, the Sox should not be trying to replace him, but rather trying to upgrade the team wherever they reasonably can. Our offense has currently scored 84 more runs than the next closest AL team. Even with a net loss in production from losing Papi, the offense should be one of the best next season.
  2. It was tough to part with Miller, but that trade has to be every single time. ERod is still very young, and he has been struggling with injuries this year. I think we may still yet be oohing and ahhing over him.
  3. As many people have said, a good pen can make the manager look a lot better. I agree with your post 100%.
  4. I am willing to sacrifice some sleep when the Sox win. When they lose, I think to myself, I gave up my sleep for this???

    The Cubs

The team that wins the World Series is often not the best regular season team. If it's not our beloved Red Sox, I hope it is the Cubs.

    The Cubs

I don't necessarily disagree with that, but the playoffs really are more or less of a crapshoot. You get there and you give it your best shot, but anything can happen. It would be a huge disappointment for them if they don't win it all, but it shouldn't be viewed as a failure.
  7. It might not sound very reassuring, but as Spud pointed out, it is a tried and true method for building a good pen.
  8. FTR, I agree with you that Little should have removed Pedro. However, there is no guarantee that either Timlin nor Embree would have preserved the lead. If I recall correctly, the Yankees hitters had some pretty good numbers against Timlin. The point is, we don't know what might have happened otherwise. Also, there are always missed opportunities that occur before or after a "bad" decision that affect the game. The outcome cannot be pinpointed on one decision.
  9. IMO, no. One decision, one play, etc. never solely determines the outcome of the game.
  10. Miller has indeed been an exception to the rule, and there have been others.
  11. I agree. Given the choice between overpaying in terms of money or overpaying in terms of prospects, I'd go with the former. My point is that I don't think they should overpay either way for relief help, especially with our set up (hopefully) and closer roles already set. IMO, having a good bullpen is definitely a priority for next season, but that can be accomplished without paying an arm and a leg.
  12. Very nice. It's cool that you can do it as a hobby.
  13. Large contracts to relief pitchers almost never work out. IMO, even less so than large contracts to starting pitchers or position players. It seems like a large number of the best closers seemingly come out of nowhere.
  14. Ah. It seems that we did misunderstand your position.
  15. He isn't going down without a fight.

    The Cubs

Theo's Cubbies are an incredible 40 games over .500 and have a 16.5 game lead over the Cards, with an 87-47 record. And, they are 4 games worse than what their Pythagorean W-L record says they should be. #BringbackTheo
  17. Yeah, that stinks. Hope it's not serious.
  18. Shaw sure has fallen out of favor with some fans. At the beginning of the season, he was the best thing since sliced bread. #BringbackPablo
  19. There is far too much that goes on in a game to pin a loss on one managerial decision.
  20. I disagree. This is no time to "panic" and put a youngster's future in jeopardy.
  21. Clay has pitched better recently, which makes it more likely that the option is picked up. If he had continued to pitch poorly, picking up the option is a whole other story.
  22. I don't think the Sox should spend a lot of money on relievers. We have our premium closer. Smith will hopefully be back next year and can be our 8th inning guy. IMO, the process of accumulating as many inexpensive arms as they reasonably can and hope that a few of them stick is the way to go.
  23. Yes I am. High school math.
  24. This guru has said it a thousand times and will say it a thousand more. It doesn't much matter.
  25. A man after my own heart.
