  1. But in all reasonableness, the Yankees were not expected to be ready to contend in 2017 either. Maybe by 2018. The way they have played since the trade has altered that expectation, but holding onto Miller for a team that would be 'rebuilding' for a couple of years did not make sense.
  2. For me, the Yankees are still the most hated team, and barring incredible, unforeseen circumstances, they always will be. Much of that has to do with the obnoxious Yankees fans that I have to deal with. The Os right now are a close 2nd, but they could be and have in the past been, overtaken by the Rays.
  3. I share your enthusiasm for the importance of defense. I think far too many people underestimate its value, and that's why people like JD Drew never get the credit they deserve. That's also why some people think that WAR is whack, but knowing that you are not a fan of its defensive component, I won't go there.
  4. "Eduardo Rodriguez has a 3.21 ERA with 57 K and 21 BB in 12 starts since the All-Star break." Everything seems to be coming together for the Sox at the right time. Let's go!
  5. The Os announcers really are terrible. However, they are 100% more tolerable when the Os lose! Woohoo!
  6. As well as they have been playing, it does raise the question now. That said, at the time, I think it was the absolute right thing to do.
  7. Ha. Kind of makes the point about not needing veterans in the postseason, doesn't it?
  8. Exactly. And I'm pretty confident that the FO will upgrade the team in other areas, most notably the pen, to help offset some of the offensive loss.
  9. In the do or die environment of the postseason, Farrell will be a lot quicker in giving the starter the hook. The more frequent off days will also help us. There are some question marks, but as others have said, we have no more than the other teams have. IMO, the Sox have as good a chance as anyone else.
  10. I don't think they are. Just because stat geeks try to understand the game better through the numbers, that doesn't mean they are ignoring the human side of the game. They fully understand and acknowledge human factors. From the same article that I got my previous quote from: "It’s possible that playoff vets exert a calming clubhouse influence that these numbers can’t capture, but most big leaguers have methods of coping with the ever-present pressure of professional sports that would pay off in the October environment. Having a playoff veteran can’t hurt, but the wisdom of those who’ve been there before often boils down to the message Delmon Young delivered to Baltimore: “Keep your booty loose and go out there and play baseball.” That’s good advice, but it’s not news to most players."
  11. I would love to have Encarnacion on the team as much as the next guy, but signing him to a 5+ year contract would be stupid. Personally, I would not sign him for more than 3 years. We do not have to replace Papi with the best (and most expensive) hitter available. We lead the AL in runs scored by over 100 runs. This will still be a very good offense after Papi retires.
  12. SFF mojo + reverse lock mojo = WIN! Go Sox!!!
  13. Even after the sweep, I will not count the Yankees out. That said, I am feeling a lot better about them not making it than I was 4 games ago.
  14. Contrary to popular belief, Stat Geeks have never ignored the human element side of the game.
  15. Not bullwhacky at all. Anecdotal evidence is just that. Personally, I am a big believer in the positive impact of veteran presence on a team. However, that post was not about veteran presence, but in having previous postseason experience. There is simply no evidence to support that previous playoff experience equates to more success in the postseason.
  16. Come over to the dark side Spud. Those guys are awesome.
  17. One thing that everyone knows but tends to forget sometimes is that a manager must manage the marathon differently than the sprint. We are now in the sprint. Farrell has the luxury of pulling a starter (or reliever) at the first sign of trouble, and he has done a very good job of doing that. As much as we may not like it, he cannot do that regularly when it's earlier in the season.
  18. Will you be giving your daughter the same advice?
  19. I'd love to win the series, but splitting with the Os on the road would be acceptable. As you said, knocking 4 games off the schedule without the Os gaining anything on us would be huge. Let's go!
  20. Three things: 1. Hanley Freakin' Ramirez! 2. SFF is King of game thread mojo! 3. StephenCurry is not right. Dude is just not right. Woohoo!!!
  21. I have not looked at the numbers, but I tend to agree that it seems like this team rarely has a late comeback win. I can't remember too many walk off wins this season either. However, the statement that I bolded, as frustrating as it is to watch, is actually a sign of a good team.
  22. “There is no evidence that postseason experience (and I attempted five different definitions of ‘experience’) has any effect on players in the postseason over and above their previously established talent levels,” Carleton wrote. “The idea that postseason experience confers some sort of advantage on a player or team is not supported by the data. If it were true, we would see some sort of departure from what we would otherwise expect based on regular-season stats. It’s not there.”
  23. Numbers wise it might make some sense to move Jackie up in the line up, but I really like the dynamic of the line up better when he is batting 9th. I live having a good bat at the bottom of the order and I like having someone who can get on base ahead of the top of the order. He seems to thrive in the 9 spot. I would leave him there.
  24. You're just a doom and gloomer.
  25. This stuff is too stressful for me. It's almost better when the Sox are completely out of the hunt. The games are so relaxing then. LOL Of course I'm kidding about the Sox being out of it, but I don't know how I'm going to get through the next 2 1/2 weeks. Please win tonight Sox. Thank you.
