  1. Ah. Makes sense.
  2. The Yankees have a -12 run differential and are 23-9 in one run games. Pythagorus is rolling over in his grave.
  3. I have no idea what their position is, but I don't see why they would have any problem with it.
  4. My favorite post of the thread.
  5. Shaw is pissed off, but I have to wonder where that fire was before Moncada was called up. Did Shaw get too complacent and too comfortable in his position? I would hope not. It could be normal growing pains or just a slump, but the timing of his bat heating up is a little curious.
  6. The Yankees are doing it with smoke and mirrors, really. That said, it really doesn't matter how they're winning if they're winning. I don't like it one bit. I was pulling for the Jays in every game of that series, which is the real reason that the Yankees won.
  7. Waiting for these late start times is the worst. I would really like it if all our games started at 6:00.
  8. If Buchholz continues to pitch well down the stretch, does Farrell get credit for knocking Wright out of the game and giving Buch another chance?
  9. The 'trained observers' are knowledgeable and passionate baseball people, not random Joes off the street. Many of them are former players, managers, scouts, etc. They have to pass a difficult test, which includes things like charting pitches, before they will even be considered to be a video scout. Then they go through intense training and practice. I imagine that anyone whose scoring is out of line with the others would be eliminated. Also, the 'trained observers' are rotated regularly to avoid bias.
  10. 1. Yes, JBJ does get extra credit for deterring a baserunner from advancing an extra base. 2. For me, quantifying things that happen in baseball is all about analyzing players and the game after the game. It actually makes baseball more enjoyable, not less. 3. I think you might be surprised at the painstaking lengths these data collectors, namely Baseball Info Solutions, go through to obtain the most accurate, objective, and unbiased data possible. 4. As much criticism as WAR gets, the bottom line is that it works. It is a very good descriptive measure of what has taken place on the field. That is true of all versions of WAR, including Baseball Prospectus' WARP, despite their differences.
  11. The Sox got this game. Let's go!
  12. You disagreeing with a move does not make it a stupid move.
  13. I would agree that fatigue is the likely culprit for his slump, at least initially. However, the longer he struggles, the more likely he is to feel pressure and to start pressing.
  14. That would be nice.
  15. Well said.
  16. Offensive stats are subjective too. Perhaps they don't have as much subjectivity as defensive stats do, but they are subjective nonetheless. As Hugh said, every ball or strike called by an umpire is subjective. Hits versus errors are subjective, which makes BA, OBP, and OPS all subjective. Calling defensive statistics "mostly voodoo" is a little out of line, IMO, though you are certainly entitled to view them that way. The key is, as always, to look at as many stats as possible in conjunction with the eye test. However, in a crunch, I'm going with UZR/150 and DRS and feeling fairly confident that I have a pretty good read on that player's defense.
  17. I do not disagree with you, and more important than the .219 BA is the .274 OBP. Your #2 hitter should be one of the best 3 hitters on the team. That said, it really does not make that big of a difference. I would move him down in the order to take some pressure off of him, but I don't know if that would do more harm to Bogaerts than it would do good. He was apparently "messed up" by being moved from shortstop to 3B, so moving him down in the lineup might mess up his confidence as well. This is a case where I would leave it to the human element and Farrell's judgment as to whether they're better off letting Xander work through it where he is or moving him down.
  18. I will point out again that the sign of a good team is one that regularly blows out its opponents in wins, but doesn't get blown out in losses. We are 27-11 in blowout games (5+ runs). That is very good. Our Pythagorean W-L has us at 81-56. That is also good.

    The Cubs

No, it can't be the Yankees. Anyone but the Yankees.
  20. UZR and DRS do a pretty comprehensive job of what you're talking about. No, they're not perfect, but they're pretty doggone good, despite what the critics say.
  21. Yup. So stinking frustrating Station. Makes me want to quit baseball.....again. We better win the next two, that's all I've got to say.
  22. Yes, you would expect the reverse to happen more often. I don't have an explanation for it.
  23. I am very happy to have Kimbrel on our team, but I agree completely that Dombrowski overpaid for him, by a good bit. That said, he was one of the top closers available, so I can't fault Dombrowski for the way that he is performing, which really isn't that bad, but he's not as lights out as we were hoping.
  24. Pathetic display by the offense again today. Shut down by Edwin Jackson. Are you kidding me?
  25. Vazquez has made adjustments to his swing, which hopefully will translate to better offensive success this time up.
