I totally agree that it's time to move on from Duran, even if the return is meager. That reality is on Breslow.  The same holds true for a number of other players. It's time to go with the adage," take what you can get".

I agree with you, take whatever you can get for him at this point. I do like the idea of packaging him with either Gray or Chapman though to up a return even more.

The Phillies need starter and outfield help. Gray would fit that rotation well. The Padres have been sniffing around Chapman and need help in the outfield too. The question then becomes what are either Dombrowski or Preller willing to part with that helps the Red Sox.

Get the best you can get for Duran, Gray & IKF.

Chapman has a year left, and that should up his value way higher than BTV gives him. Contreras is aging, but aging well. He has 2 more years, as does Whitlock. These three should be shopped but are NOT in the "trade for the best offer- no matter what it is" category.

Other than Contreras I don't see anybody in the infield that I would lose sleep over seeing traded, and that includes Mayer. Of course he is one that could flourish in a new environment, but there are other middle infielders in the farm system. The hype that surrounded the "Big Three" for so long has dulled the senses of some.

I was up for trading Mayer in prior offseasons due to his injury history. He's been healthy this year, but his bat just hasn't developed the way we had hoped.

BTV still has Mayer valued at $38M (5th highest.)

Would you trade him now?

(I would for the right return, despite our great need for infielders not playing 1B.)

Yes, I'd trade Mayer, but I think his stock has to be lower than ever.

I agree, and it's significantly lower than BTV's take.

He's a good defender, but we need offense.

The defense has been fine?

If MLB FO’s think he’s a +38 send him immediately.

I seriously doubt any do.

The next questions are:

1. "Who do we have better than him?"

2. "Is his trade value now worth more than his (speculative) upside value to us later?"

#1 answer: I doubt we add 3 non-1B infielders by opening day 2027, so that has to be part of the equation: Durbin, Romy, Mayer, Story, Monasterio, Seigler, Eaton, KC, Cheng and prospect Arias. We will also need 2-3 utility and infield depth players on the 2027 roster.

#2 answer: Sox management might already know his current trade value, but the upside value to us is unknown. Even if we add two major infielders, would you rather have the third and 4th ones be Durbin/Romy with Monasterio as the depth of Mayer fit in their somewhere?

(Note: one of the two infielders added would have to be a SS, since Durbin & Romy are not SSs.)

After 312 career at bats and at 23 years old?

If we do trade Mayer, and he does well elsewhere, will this board refrain from blaming Brez?

LMAO!

Yes and they should.

It’s still Breslow’s call to trade Mayer and he probably doesn’t know this forum exists, let alone care what we say.  And he certainly doesn’t want our advice…

Only 132 innings at shortstop.  Hard to exceed league average in runs and outs with 75% less innings…
