The uneven start to the season for Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story has hit a pothole.

Story is reportedly being placed on the 10-day injured list, likely due to the minor groin issue that he has been dealing with most of the season. Infielder Nick Sogard was called up from Triple-A Worcester. Andruw Monasterio is likely to get a bulk of the time at shortstop in Story's absence.

The oft-injured Story, coming off his first healthy season since 2021, has struggled at the plate and in the field this year. He has a .206/.244/.303 slash line with three homers and 19 RBIs in 41 games. This comes after a 25-homers, 96-RBI season in which he slashed .263/.308/.433.

Sogard will be seeing his first action of the season with the Red Sox after a combined 61 games over the last two years in which he had a slash line of .266/.321/.335 with no homers and 17 RBIs. He was slashing .269/.417/.454 at Triple-A this year with five homers and 23 RBIs.

So now we’ll see if Mayer gets moved to SS. If he does it says something, but if he doesn’t it says even more.

Gotta wonder if this is a phantom IL type move to give him a chance to regroup while opening up a roster slot for Sogard.

Funny, I had just mentioned promoting Sogard as yet another dice roll.

Could the next call-up be Capra?

He'd need to be added to the 40 (DFA Cheng?) but why not try a hot hand?

AAA in May

.959 Ward

.952 Sogard

.943 Seigler

.847 Capra

Give yourself a pat on the back, but it was already mentioned a couple of days ago by other posters to bring up Sogard, or Eaton.

If he doesn’t move there, it might just mean they expect Story back relatively soon and they won’t be re-arranging anyone in the meantime.

And the article does blatantly say Monasterio is likely to get the bulk of the SS playing time while Story is out…

Capra is 29 years old with a career .369 OPS in MLB.  Unless the goal is to make everyone else feel better about their numbers,  no way they promote Capra.

But Ward!! I mean why is his .474 OBP still in AAA?  Why did Breslow trade for this guy if he’s not going to use him instead of other players whose offensive talents right now are such that they couldn’t hit the ground if the jumped off a cliff?

I don’t think it’s totally phantom; watching him run the bases over the past week or 2  (on those rare occasions he’s been on), he didn’t seem to be moving well.  He’s a pretty fast guy and he seemed to be taking it easy.  He needs a mental reset but he definitely has something physical going on as well.

Don’t leave us hanging, what do these scenarios say?

It means that Old Red only reads headlines.  It’s the literary equivalent of only watching highlights…

I don’t expect him to actually answer.

I personally would leave Mayer at 2nd for now.  He’s having a tough enough time at the plate so far without adding a position change on top of it.  There may be times when he moves over in a game  given pinch hitters or whatever, but a permanent change right now, no.

Monasatario and IKF can handle short defensively and let’s be realistic, are they really going to be much of a downgrade on offense?
