Are these projections with ballpark specifics in mind?

You need to ask Mr Stanley himself.

Clarke may have been a top 100 guy during the summer, but he was not even listed in the Sox top 10 in their most recent update.

It was rumoured they were trying to move him at the trade deadline, too. So I don't think they were overly high on him.

I didn't flinch at either name being included.

Wow, this is actually one guy I mentioned as a possible trade target!

I know: blind squirrel on a broken clock.

The season is saved! WOW! We got Sonny Gray!

I for one am sick and tired of the Flops dumpster diving for players like Gray. Maybe he could be useful as a depth pitcher but beyond that....USELESS. We need a bona fide #2 SP and a power hitting established RHH not named Bregman.  Pretty vanilla start to the offseason.

Question how does this deal work against our payroll and luxury tax? Do we get penalized for the full 31m or does the 20m that St Louis is eating stay on their books?

I had him and Password ad their most tradable prospects, but I had hoped for someone better.

I liked Fitts as a potential bullpen arm, where I felt he could succeed…

Luxury tax hit for us is $20 million I believe....

STL covers that portion of the salary.

So specifically for the last couple of weeks we have argued JH’s desire to spend…. The number many of us (not all) arrived at was 244 ish for 2026 payroll…. Which I think meant we had 48m to spend. Did we just spend 30m on Gray or 10m of that 48m??

$20m in LT terms. I think we'll be going way over the 244 limit.

Gray was the first good starter I mentioned this offseason because Chaim was taking over in St. Lou to do what he does best: shed salaries.

When I saw the player return, I thought the same thing Hitch did -- but not only does Brez want to keep Early and Tolle, I'm more convinced now those two would be the demand in deals for the likes of Ryan and Peralta.

This trade may also be positive for who it did not include: Contreras -- another contract Bloom is likely trying to dump. His absence may mean Brez and the Sox are busy zeroing in on a more prominent righty power bat...

With St. Louis pitching in $20 million, the Red Sox will be on the hook for $21 million — a little less than the value of MLB’s qualifying offer. Gray’s competitive balance tax (CBT) hit will be valued at a tick under $21 million in 2026.

Oh hell yeah I’d love to see JH remind people we are the Boston effing Red Sox……  if Gray/ Bello are our #3-4 SP’s in 2026 this is such a good trade. Hell even if they are #2-3 to start the year, but we go out and get 2 of the top 8 bats in free agency I’m all freaking in.

Gray >>> Giolito

It's true: last year Gray led the NL in shutout. He also fits Brez' desire to land another top arm who can make -- actually make -- a start in the postseason.

Then again, Gio was once thought of as a innings eater... at least a workpony.

So is Breslow’s plan this off-season only to acquire players named Gray?  First Tristan, now Sonny.

Or will he be venturing out into other colors?  (Like, say, Hunter Greene? Or will we just get Seth Brown and Tyler Black?)
