It defies explanation how the Red Sox bats can be so volatile one day and deadly slow the next.    But it is a .500 team so win one/lose one is the mantra.

Note that the batting stats start to become skewed by the blowout wins.    Mayer and Anthony may be getting over their initial newbie problems and are becoming comfortable hitting at Fenway.

Give Brandon a win tonight  so July starts in the right direction.  0-3 Fitts would appreciate it too.

The team is 0-6 in Fitts starts. How long can he flip tails?

0-10 if you go back to last year.

Flipping tails is a very apt description; he hasn't pitched that badly overall.  He's had 5 starts where he's allowed no runs, one with 2 runs allowed, a couple with 3 runs allowed, one with 4 and one with 6.  When he's left with a lead, the pen has blown it.

They don't score for him.  In those 10 games, the Sox offense has scored 2, 4, 2, 1, 2, 2, 2, 1, 6, and 2 runs.

I would love to see Dobbins and Fitts move ahead of Bello. I'm not sure if Bello can survive without a swing and miss stuff.

Seriously?  Have you already forgotten the two Yankees series?  In the first one the Yankees scored 6, 10, and 11 runs.  In the second, 1, 3, and 0 runs.

A lot depends on the pitcher on the mound.  The weird thing about last night is that our starter was our best and the Reds starter, while not their best, is highly touted in part because he routinely throws 100 mph.  Weirder still is that most of had the impression that the 2025 Sox can't hit fastballs.   So the Sox drove him out of the game with 5 runs before he got his 2d out.  And Crochet gave up 5 runs, 4 earned, in 6 IP, which is double his ERA.

I personally think the Sox hitting, despite the absence of both Raffy and Bregman, just might be coming around.  Tune in tonight.

Another example on why assigned pitcher wins and losses is not a good way of assigning pitcher value and skill.

IP ER Team Result

2024

5.1 0 Loss 7-2

5.0 0 Loss 5-4

5.0 0 Loss 4-2

5.0 4 Loss 6-1

2025

6.0 3 Loss 3-2

6.0 3 Loss 6-2

5.0 0 Loss 3-2

3.0 0 Loss 5-1

1.0 5 Loss 7-6 (most runs allowed but only 3rd run run loss)

4.0 2 Loss 5-2

5 of 10 starts w zero ERs allowed.

8 of 10 allowing 0-2 ERs.

Ah, 1975... soundtrack: Jefferson Starship's "Miracles"

if only you believe... the underdog Red Sox, without an injured Jim Rice, could upset the NL All-Star team (posing as the Reds).

Little-remembered trivia: Boston's Opening Day DH that year wasn't Rice, but another former star slugger who missed the last Sox World Series -- which also went seven games vs. a mighty opponent -- with a more famous injury.

Toro has been excellent with the scoops.

I keep waiting for the "journeyman" and "AAAA" guy to come back down to earth.

He hasn't.

The Sox have done pretty well with guys like Toro, Romy & Refsnyder. Of course, there is a longer list of failures, but we have 3 that have stuck.

I approve of that "t" you snuck into your last word.

Ahhh, Tony C as the DH.

The big wonder on "Miracles" was how it passed the censors.

Great song and band. I particularly like their early stuff as the Airplane, but they had some good songs after they went pop.

I remember in '75 after 3 rainouts that before the 6th game started NBC televised Abbott & Costello Who's On First? The greatest baseball skit before arguably the greatest baseball game.

Loved that skit.

We Built This City On Rock 'n' Roll is one of the worst rock/pop songs ever. The Starship, IMHO, was terrible.

I absolutely despise that song!

When I hear it, I sing along, "YOU built this city on rig-a-ma-role."

3 pitch strikeout of Mayer, lefty bat vs righty arm, shows how simple pitching can get. First the slightly embarrassing swing at a low slider.  Then, determined not to get fooled again, Mayer lets two very hittable fast balls go right by him.

Love those 2 runs in the 1st.

Duran stole that double on a gamble that paid off.  This time it worked. That other time it was with no one on and the Sox down by 3 runs.

Isn't it great how Fitts is mowing them down tonight?  He has to because behind him is the worst defense in the history of MLB.  All those errors.  Just awful.

I hate the song, "Sara," too, but Miracles, With Your Love, Count on Me and Runaway are all very sappy, but I like 'em a lot.

I have a weird taste of music. I hate country and almost all pop songs, especially the sappy ones, but a few grab me, for some unknown reason. I'm not a Grace Slick fan, but am a closet Marty Balin fan. I also love the spinoff band, Hot Tuna.

"Volunteers" is a legendary song. Of course, "White Rabbit." Wow!

"We Can be Together" is underrated, and maybe "Somebody to Love" is overrated but still a classic.

Devers update:

One for his last 15, including 12 K's. Also, Devers has a total of 4 RBI as a Giant. Thanks Giants.

Unfortunately, I agree with you.  I rooted for Raffy as our DH this year, and I thought he was more sinned against than sinning.  But since the trade the only story out is that it was the dumbest move in the history of MLB to let such a truly great hitter go.  Nobody but nobody said maybe the Sox needed to do it. Nobody but nobody said that, while he was missed, it was especially tough because Bregman was already on the IL.

The Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow is one of the greatest debut albums of all time and one of the best psychedelic albums of the '60's.

I know there is still much to prove, but I'm sold on Anthony.

Mayer is close behind.

Agree.  No credit to Breslow they are Sox, of course, but shirley he had these two in mind when he went looking for someone to take Devers off his hands.   Plus Cora has pretty much kept Anthony in Devers old slot, batting 2d.

And guess what?  Neither of them is a defensive liability.

Agreed, and the one-two punch with "Volunteers" was formidable.
