JH would rather see Story Land stay open. He’s still owed $50M+.

I mean in a perfect world anyone would want that.

If you owned a stock of company xyz, and its value cratered, you'd want it to perform and regain it's value whether you keep it OR you decide to sell it.

But this is baseball, and just like in finance at a certain point you have to learn to cut your losses.  We may very well be there with Story and I CERTAINLY wouldn't argue against anyone saying we are there now.

Sunk Cost Fallacy

I'm sure the reason Story is still here is that they don't want to eat the entire salary, but nobody else wants to take on any portion of it. My guess is that he plays out this season and then is gone this offseason.

Conversely, if people gave up on their investments too early, they'd constantly be buying high and selling low.

Masa is still hanging around somewhere collecting his $18M, so i don’t think the Red Sox have got to the point of sending Story somewhere to collect his $50M+ still owed to him yet It is a problem though.

I agree, and I think Bregman going down has given Story a longer shelf life.

Story is in his 4th season of underperformance/injury with us.  I don't think it would be giving up too early.

Performance no, but money yes.

Well, Masa is also injured.  Like legit injured, I think we all speculated he wasn't but apparently he actually is.

But at least Masa can still hit and get on base.  But we don't need a DH.

That wasn't a direct comparison of Story but rather the concept of the sunk cost fallacy.

It's the old 'both things can be true' deal.  The sunk cost fallacy happens.  Selling too soon too low happens.

Story is getting close to the point of being a writeoff in any case.  He can't hit heat any more, and there's no cure for that.

I won't argue against that

If they dumped him, it doesn't matter what happens afterwards. They have an in house replacement. Mayer takes over at SS and we're happy. If Story goes off and has two All Star seasons, good! It doesn't affect me in the least. That's why I'm not all hot and bothered about the Sale trade. Not that many people were upset by the trade on the day it happened because Sale had been injured and underperforming for years.

Trevor Story has a .289/.339/.489 slash line vs. LHP.

At the very least, they need to start benching Story vs. RHP. He could platoon 2B with Hamilton if they ever moved Campbell to 1B.  I would say the same of Campbell but I want him to get his AB's in and evolve.

EDIT: This is until he is DFA'd

The Sale situation had some similarities and some differences.  I wasn't upset when I heard about the trade but my opinion of it got worse as the rest of that offseason unfolded.

This is the only way they get through the year.

I look at each move in a vacuum, but at the offseason as a whole. The Sale trade was fine. The Giolito acquisition as the "big get" was LAME.

To me the last sentence is exactly what made the Sale trade questionable.  I thought when they traded Sale it meant serious starting pitching acquisitions were coming.

It could be worse.

Trevor Story joined the Red Sox for his age 29 season while Pablo Sandoval joined the Sox for his age 28 season.

Their lines with the Red Sox:

TS 217 G, 895 PA, .228/,287/.377/.664, 4.0 bWAR

PS 161 G, 620 PA, .237/.286/.360/.646, -1.6 bWAR

Now there's a big cheer-up!

At least with Pablo they got to sell Panda hats and we got to see him absolutely brutalize a belt buckle. With Story, it's just been a lot of sad contemplation.

I mean, we got a stiff playing SS right now.  I'd rather have a stiff at 3B than a stiff at SS.

It seems, we'll need to have one somewhere. I was just pointing that out.

Romero 3B

Mayer SS

Campbell 2B

Garcia 1B

The sample size is still small enough, that Story could have one his patented 10 day hot streaks and get to .725 or better.

Not saying he will. No evidence exists that suggests he will get hot.

I do remember 2022, when he was at .545 after 29 games, then hit 1.144 in 15 games, including a 5 game stretch with 17 rbi, and suddenly he was at .776. He eventually got up to .785, then hit .687 over the last 47 games (to 9/11/22.)

The guy looks totally lost with no hope, at all. I'm not sure if Grissom or KC at 3B is a better option, and it looks like KC will be our next 1Bman, for a while, anyway. I do think Mayer should play SS FT, going forward, unless something happens.

Now, there is an idea. Give Jhostynxon a 1Bman's mitt, today!
