Here's a novel business plan for a longterm way to compete and save money: SPEND money! Sign free agent pitchers instead of trading top position player prospects, who you can then ink to team-friendly extensions.

Just think of the savings, when you don't have to pay Devers $300 million in his prime. What would be better: a Red Sox team with Juan Soto or one with Roman Anthony, Max Fried and Jack Flaherty (ya, why not get the old high school gang back together; they could rehab at Giolito's house).

Honestly, Flaherty has been very mediocre the last few years and Fried gets injured a lot. So is your question which team is better - one with Juan Soto? Or one with Roman Anthony and Jack Flaherty, but also with Max Fried on the IL?

Both teams have pitching weaknesses. Which one has more money to fix them? (Probably Anthony/Flaherty team.)

Of course they’re still not equal unless Anthony lives up the the hype. Soto is going to deliver…

I would not call Fried an injury prone pitcher:

2019: 30 GS (3 in relief)

2020: 11 out of 12 possible GS

2021: 28 GS

2022: 30 GS

2023: 14 GS

2024: 21 GS out of what? 22 chances?

Since 2019, there are only 21 pitchers with more than 134 GS, and one is GIO, who I will assume he passes in 2 more starts. He is 2 starts from #18 in MLB.

He is 24th in IP at 772, just 1.2 IP from GIO and 23rd place.

I wrote a longer post and deleted it, because I couldn't really find any right now... but there used to be: Hanley for Beckett, Moncada for Sale...

... there's not even a Skenes-like pitching prospect in the minors worth giving up for what Anthony could become.

The Beckett trade was HRam plus a nice pitching prospect in Anibal Sanchez, and MIA forced the Sox to take on Lowell and his contract.

The Sale trade involved 4 prospects, including Moncada & Kopech, another highly regarded pitching prospect.

Pedro took 2 top pitching prospects to get: Tony Armas Jr. & Carl Pavano.

Schilling took 3 moderate pitching prospects (Yes, harmony, sometimes 3 or 4 for 1 trades happen;) Fossum, Jorge de la Rosa and Brandon Lyons.

We have done far better with these types of trades than FA signings like Price and Lackey.

Even lesser deals like Nate & Peavy worked out well.

It'll be interesting to see where they push Campbell to. His RHB would be good to rotate in the OF and 2B. His defense is pretty rough for SS at the MLB level.

2B/OF seem more likely. But there is an opening at 2B!

Story still has 3 years of control and Mayer 6 years. Unless we trade one or have one of the 3 play 3B, we will be bottle-necked.

(The way Story and Mayer get hurt, maybe 3 are needed to get 162 games x 2.

September Call-UP Day is not that far away. Each team is required to call up two and only two players and keep their ML roster at 28, everyday in the month.

Who might the two be?

One could be Hendriks or Slaten. (If both are ready, we could call both up and demote someone- maybe Kelly, Bernardino or Weissert. I doubt we add any other pitcher, unless these two are not ML ready. If both are not ready, maybe Horn or Priester gets the call. Longshot: Guerrero.

Out of everyday players, maybe Meidroth gets a look, but maybe we'll see EValdez, Sogard or Westbrook, again. Longshot: Anthony, Teel or Campbell.

Fitts served up a tasty meatball tonight!!!!!

Sandlin serves up a ton of meatballs every game and they get fouled off most of the time.

Fits serves up a few meatballs a game and they all become taters

I guess that is the difference between 96 and 92.

GRE got no-hit, but Dean and Paez combined for 8 IP, 2 hit, one run pitching with 13 Ks.

Dean was pulled early due to 5BB in 3.1 IP.

Dobbins pitched a gem for POR.

6IP, 3H, 0ER, 1BB, 7K

His ERA is down to 3.17. His .608 OPSA must have gone down, tonight.

This is soxprospects.com's summary on Dobbins:

Potential up-and-down depth starter or multi-inning reliever. Ceiling of a back-end starter. At his best, will show plus velocity and three secondary pitches that can all get hitters out. Has pitches that move in all directions and confidence that he can throw any of them for strikes. Effortful delivery brings injury and consistency concerns, and needs to improve his fastball command. Fastball can get hittable later in games, and he needs to show he can consistently get left-handed hitters out to profile as a starter, but has developed into one of the more intriguing arms in the system.

Dobbins' max velo is now 98+ which is greater than what it shows on his SoxProspects page. His past 9 starts include a 1.79 ERA. Probably ready for a promotion. Chance he leaps Elmer in the rankings before next season?

I'm not worried about the bottle necking considering all the injuries that happen upon this team. I think they should transition Campbell off SS as he should never play there though.

I'm liking Dobbins more and more.

BTW, Elmer's last 9 starts:

40.1 IP

10 Hits is off-the-charts great!

1.56 ERA (7 ERs)

19 BBs hurts

34 K's is not great

They both might jump players in tandem.

We seem to keep players we know will not play SS playing there too long.

It would be nice to have a 3 combo of Story-Mayer-Campbell.

SS: L Mayer/ R Story

2B: R Story/ R Campbell

How much trade value does DHam have?

Could we trade him for Renfroe? (LOL!)

I'd keep Hamilton around until there's an actual roster squeeze. He's been really good and maybe he's the guy they use at the beginning of the season until Mayer is ready? IDK.

I think Valdez is useless at this point. Hard to count on Story to be healthy.

Mayer's injury history might be just as frightening.

I actually like the DHam-Romy 2B platoon, and Romy can back up 1B, in a pinch. If grissom beats out Romy, fine.

What might work is if Mayer and Story time their injuries just right and we never go a game without one being healthy. That would probably be all we need.

Sad, but true.

I think the single A teams end their seasons around Sept 8th, while the Sea Dogs ends Sept 15th. Woo ends the 22nd of September.

Of course, there are fall leagues and winter leagues, but the minor league season is winding down. All-in-all, I think our minor leagues did pretty well. We seem to have more pitchers with some sort of promise than before. Some of our top prospects have not disappointed. Some of our mid tier prospects have started knocking, loudly on the top tier door. We've also seen many 18-19 year olds show some very exciting skillsets. It's been a long time since I have been this pumped up over our farm, and what makes this even more powerful, is that we just recently graduated a pretty large bunch of rising young stars.

I realize I'm a homer, through and through, but I think we are a lot closer to glory than it seems many think we are. We only have 7 more losses than the best team in MLB, right now, and that is after a pretty bad, recent stretch. To me, we are just a few really good pitchers away from being right there with the "big boys."

It may very well take trading away some of these prospects I've been drooling over for years, but the time is now. Just get it done, JH, Brez & Co.

Niko Kavadas homered for the Angels. How will he ever recover from the psychological damage of being called up to the majors after only three full years in the minors?

He's the next Babe Ruth.

Obviously you’ve never seen Joe Boyle pitch…

The guy who had an 8.00 ERA at ND?

I'm not sure an early call up was what messed him up.
