Well, at least this guy is known to take the ball every 5 days, no matter what.

IMO, the best part of this signing is that it keeps one of these guys in the pen:

Houck

Whitlock

Crawford

Circus continues with another beer leaguer signing

You pink hats remember the Who tune, new boss same as the old boss?

Somebody please start a “fire Breezelow thread”

Crockett must have pictures

Soto should have been the target, he would have signed an extension, player has eastern ct roots, Hampton to be exact

Henry’s biggest mistake is John Henry, but hey, it’s only been 5 years since the last ring

How did Epstein Francona Dombrowski do after they left yawkey way

Garbage garbage garbage

That’s how I feel.

I hope to hell I’m wrong.

I’m just sick of signing guys based on the hope the regain what they once had.

Hey, we broke the$10M barrier for a SP! Not the guy I’d do it on.

I would not be too upset, if he ends up as the second best SP we acquire, this winter, but I fear he the best we will add.

I’ve always disliked building a rotation from back. Add a 1 or2 and push down what you have already.

$19M is not chump change, although the short deal mitigates the risk a bit.

That being said, I do prefer Giolito as a SP and Houck or Crawford in the pen than forcing one of them to try and start 30 games and 175 IP.

The optimist view:

167 GS since 2018 is 5th most in MLB. He’s been a horse.

4.14 xFIP in that time places him in the middle.

The pessimist view:

4.48 ERA places him in the bottom third tier since ‘18.

(That’s worse than Kluber,Matz, Paxton, Stroman and many others.)

105 ERA- is still bottom third, as is his BB/K and HR/9.

Last 2 year numbers are frightening:

119 ERA- (100th out of 108- just barely above Kluber), but his 4.08 xFIP places 62nd.

I’m usually big on the last 3 year sample size for players, although his trend is scary. Here is where Giolito has placed in some key categories since 2021:

151 pitchers with 200+ IP

6th in GS w 94

45th in K-BB% at 17.9

46th in fWAR at 6.9

68th xFIP 3.97

109 in ERA 4.43

109 in ERA- at 106

137 inHR/9 at 1.6

If you divide 150 SPs by 5 starters per team, Giolito slots as a…

#2 fWAR

#3 xFIP

#4 ERA-

#5 HR/9

Soto may sign an extension, but Henry couldn’t “afford” it.

Not an ace, but not a 5th starter. I think he’ll end up being an ok midrotation guy. Need someone above Bello though!

He will help. Most likely he is a mid-rotation guy. But there is a non-trivial (15-20%) he will be at least as good as Bello. If this is THE MOVE, boo ... but I do like the pickup.

The dreaded splitsville splits.

I think the bullpen of Jansen, Martin, Winckowski, Schreiber, Houck, Whitlock, Bernardino, Slaten, and Mata can cover for a lot of rotation mistakes…

Not an Eovaldi nor a Wacha the past two years -- but will be paid a similar AAV by the Red Sox that they refused either last winter.

For those of us who feared same-old of the Committee figure-headed by Brez/Bloom, at least something has changed... in the amount of change they're finally dishing out for starting pitching.

He’s averaged 30+ starts, and 160-180 innings the last 3 years, so that’s good for something.

We'll see. Glad you're optimistic, but stat people here might cite ERAs the past two years for comparison: Wacha 3.32, 3.22 vs. Giolito 4.90, 4.88... MLB average 4.02, 4.37.

But Giolito even in his awful year last year still had more bWAR (1.6) than Wacha (1.2).

Wacha pitched 134 IP last year, his most since 2017…

As I stated before, Giolito was likely to be a successful reclamation project for a team with a good pitch development system, my doubt was the Red Sox being that team. 200 K guys don't grow on trees. We'll see.

I’ve never mentioned those splits.

His 2022 numbers were not impressive either.

He may end up being a good or even great signing. At his age, a bounce back is certainly in play.

I’m just tired of relying on bounce back or project type starters.

Get one more starter and Crawford moves to that already nice pen.

Cora hasn’t said who’s going to be in the rotation yet, so The Kut Man may be already slated for the BP. Pivetta, Kut Man, Houck, and Whit are all possibilities for the rotation still at this point. Remember you always have to have someone ready to take over for Frail.

Soxprospects lists Sale, Bello and Crawford and two acquisitions (one being Giolito).

I’m fine with Crawford over Pivetta, but I like Pivetta as our 5 a little more.

Crawford last 10 starts: 4.75 ERA, and there was no divorce.

I’m ok with Pivetta to the pen to make way for Gio. We can yank a starter real early with Nick in the pen (or Kutter.)

3.62 FIP and .666 OPSa in those 10 starts, so not really a terrible finish.

Like I keep saying Cora hasn’t said anything, but my guess would be if it come down to just Kut Man, and Pivetta that Pivetta would get the nod.

But will it be Lucas? Apparently, Giolito set some kind of record in '23 as the first guy in 125 years to give up 8 runs in a game for three different teams.

That's three different managers who allowed him to have Bearclaw games (hopefully, Cora isn't looking forward to a new recruit for those kinds of innings to eat...).
