Devers vs LHP in '23: 823 OPS

Devers and Casas hitting back to back is not a problem ever.

The Sox don’t need a RHH 1b. They really only need a backup for Casas’ scheduled days off (which can be controlled) and in case he has to leave mid-game for whatever reason…

It’s not always about learning. Sometimes it’s about years of control.

If Rafaela plays CF, should the plan be O’Neill in RF?

Duran LF, Rafaela CF and O'Neill RF is better than Duran in CF, O'Neill in LF and Abreu RF.

By "controlled," do you mean call up Dalbec for 1 game, then send him back to AAA? (Play whack-a-mole with the 8th RP'er at the same time?)

I said EARLIER that a weak side platoon for 1b wasn't much to worry about. It was a bigger deal to attain a platoon bat when Dalbec was the primary 1b IMO.

No surprise he wasn't brought back in 2016.

There were some key additions to the 2016 team, but one major reason for the big jump in wins was the jump be many returning vets:

2015> 2016

Porcello: 172 IP 4.92 ERA> 223 IP 3.15 ERA

Wright: 73 IP 4.09> 157 IP 3.33 ERA

Mookie: 654 PA .820 OPS> 730 PA .897 OPS

Bogey 654 and .776 > 719 and .802

Pedey 425 and .797 > 698 and .825

JBJ 255 and .832 > 636 and .835

Papi 614 and .913 > 626 and 1.021

HRam 430 and .717 > 620 and .866

(An amazing 6 returning vets with 620+ PAs and an OPS over .800!)

I wouldn't play O'Neilllll in CF.

St. Louis did use him in CF a couple years ago. And a little last year. DRS didn’t like him out there, but UZR did. OAA was neutral.

But the total sample was only 393 innings over 2 seasons…

i wouldn't play him anywhere

Why not?

Don’t like good defensive outfielders? Or are you on board with the “he has big biceps so that has to mean steroids” crowd?

Can we also assume you thought Mookie’s twitch reflexes were the result of cocaine abuse?

Who is "we?" You and who else?

The Red Sox announced Wednesday that they’ve claimed infielder/outfielder Romy Gonzalez off waivers from the White Sox. In order to open a spot on the 40-man roster, Boston designated right-hander Zack Weiss for assignment.

He saw Tyler in the shower after gym class and it ruined his manhood.

No, but you can just pick your spots, unlike if he gets hurt.

Unless Casas is going to miss multiple games and go on the IL, there is no need to call anyone up. They can't just call up Dalbec for one game unless they have a double header than day or they demote someone. They can pick spots and rest him against the occasion LHP if they like. Or before another off day. Whatever...

I get the calling up for an injury, but as of right now, who plays 1B when Casas gets his Cora rest day, which is about 1 every 3-4 weeks.

Without knowing the actual 26 man roster, my guess is that it would be either Reyes or Refsnyder.

With Weiss let go, what does the DFA List look like, now?

Here is my stab at it:

1. Joe Jacques

2. David Hamilton (very little MI depth on the 40.)

3. Bryan Mata (trade?)

4. Rob Refsnyder (trade?)

5. Brandon Walter (trade?)

6. Cooper Criswell (trade?

Others....

Justin Slaten (trade? or, trade for him, so he can be sent to AAA?)

Greg Weissert (trade?)

I mentioned handing Ref a 1Bman's mitt, a while ago. It might make some sense. Our OF is getting crowded and his split wonder slipped some, last season.

I figure 3 bench sports go to those two and McGuire.

The fourth spot could go to Dalbec, Gonzalez, Valdez, or someone not yet in the organization...

Gonzalez? or Reyes?

That's pushing either Abreu or Rafaela to AAA?

I think that is likely.

If the Sox have Duran and O’Neill lined up for two starting outfield spots, why also have two rookie outfielders? Especially if both have options…

Gonzalez stinks. Absolutely terrible. He's well behind Reyes for anything.

I'm not even sure who Gonzalez is here.

I do agree with Notin though in that I think one of Rafaeala/Abreu starts the year in AAA. I think it's Ceddanne, he could use alittle bit more seasoning, and Abreu has earned a shot.

The first thing I looked for on him was, does he play 1B, too.

Nope.

Tristan Casas is 24 years old. Big, strong and healthy. He plays the least taxing and demanding position on the field. Exactly how many days off is he going to need ? Surely, someone on the roster is versatile enough to fill in on those few occasions. This should be the least of the Red Sox concerns.
