It's been 4 years and almost a month since the last time the Red Sox signed a starting pitcher for more than $10 mill.

I think JH is more interested in the PGA tour right now than the Boston Red Sox plus all the other adventures going on. While the Red Sox used to be the shiny bauble has now lost some of its luster to JH.

You should copy this comment to the Sox ownership thread.

Nate was a free agent…

It's almost like there should be a special category for free agents who re-sign with the same team. Just need a catchy name for it.

Ahhh, yes.

I still kinda see it as an extension.

When was the last new player FA pitcher signing over $10M?

Price?

When you don’t produce top pitchers in your system, you’d think there would be more.

FEs or free extensions

There is nothing free about it. Does it really matter that Nate was a FA, and Sale was not?

The free comes from "free agency".

There is a difference between the two situations, even if the results look the same.

I get that but does it matter that Kike was a FA the first time, and technically not a FA the second time signing with the Red Sox? I think there are to many labels now.

We'd probably agree, though, that it mattered a lot to the Dodgers to be able to negotiate with Mookie for the better part of a year before he became a free agent.

I’ll agree with that.

Casas looking good working out. Cornrows, and a full Beard. Hope he’s dug out that 1B mitt over the winter.

Me too, seems like he has a strong work ethic. Which I love.

He also seems to really study the game.

Exactly.

And even after 2018, there is no way Eovaldi- a nearly 29yo pitcher with a grand total of 850 IP in 8 years, and two TJ -surgeries - gets any sort of 4 year deal without the benefit of negotiating with multiple teams, let alone a 4 year deal for that $17mill AAV.

There’s a huge difference between extensions and FA for that reason.

Heck the Yankees offered Judge 7 yrs $230 mill when no one else could talk to him. Let the Giants negotiate, and the deal climbs to 9 yrs $360mill…

There are two labels. Two.

That number hasn’t changed since Curt Flood…

As usual jumping the gun, and getting it wrong. I was talking about to many labels in baseball, and not about FA, and I’m pretty sure there are a lot more labels than 2. Late for the party, and the question, and answer had already been changed, so when you thought to yourself I gotcha, you ended up getting yourself.

How about RFA= returning FA?

Still just a free agent. And RFA would be confusing.

Some sports journalist use UFA to describe baseball free agents, but baseball only has unrestricted free agents, unlike other sports. So this is unnecessary and redundant. This would get further clouded if someone started using RFA along with UFA…

I guess it’s more of a psychological factor for fans.

We seem to view FA signings as adding a new player. The Nate signing just kept the status quo and seemed the same as an extension, except the money part you pointed out is significant.

Tim Dierkes of MLBTR offers the same (paraphrased) advice every year on the annual free agent contest - “you could probably win if you just put each player back on his old team, and then maybe tweaked a handful”

To the fan, they don’t see much difference between extending Sale as re-signing Nate.

It’s pretty shocking that we have not added an outside free agent SP at more than $10M since Price.

We’ve extended or re-signed Porcello, Sale and Nate, but nobody knew.

We’ve seen so few good SPers come up from our farm in those 8 years: you’d expect more.

Jumping the gun? I’m sorry - did I interrupt your typing?

“I get that but does it matter that Kike was a FA the first time, and technically not a FA the second time signing with the Red Sox? I think there are to many labels now.“

Looks like a complete thought on one subject to me and most people, especially within the context of the board convo (a new label for returning FA.)

If you meant something else, that’s on you. Don’t expect me to clarify things for you, either…

What’s jumping the gun got to do with my typing? Not one blessed thing. I was already done, but in your haste to say I gotcha you missed the point completely that I was talking about to many labels in baseball, and not about FA. You have NEVER clarified anything for me on here, and most of the time you don’t know the point anyway, so it would be pretty hard to do. I clarify for you that there is more than 2 labels in MLB.

Read your own post. It was solely about free agency.

If you changed topics mid-stream with no transition, that’s on you. Not that you can ever admit that…

Only you went off on it like you did with Olson singing with the Braves, because I didn’t specify he’d been traded first when everyone knew it anyway. Like everyone sticks to a subject, or thread on here. The post was about FA, but comment was about MLB. If that bothers you, and obviously it did, because you felt you had to jump on it then good. I’ll sleep better tonight.
