... even with a five-time Silver Slugger shortstop whose former team only made the playoffs five times, and won two world championships, in his 10 AL seasons?

Edit: in his first World Series, he actually played third base... for the first time... as a 20-year-old.

It’s not easy to build a top defensive team with a below average SS, but they proved it can be done.

Because they put above average shortstops everywhere else…

And now the Dodgers want Teoscar.

You’d think with how many players that team keeps adding, that they weren’t very good last year…

Why shouldn't the top tier teams be in on everyone? They aren't #1 in team payroll yet. They moved Mookie to 2B and have a little need. Why not?

The Red Sox strategically signed one for more money at the time than their homegrown star who could actually hit, moved the new guy to second base for a year, then back to short the next, and are still able to brag being the fifth-best team in their division both seasons!

@ChrisCotillo

Two Red Sox SP target updates, per sources:

* There has been consistent communication with James Paxton and a reunion there is in play but not a certainty.

* Remain engaged on Lucas Giolito along with many other clubs who are targeting his upside.

Paxton doesn’t do it for me. He’s like Sale, but without the talent…

He throws much harder than Keller. Better Statcast colors too.

I hope the Dodgers go 162-0 next year, and then lose in the first round of the playoffs.

Absolutely.

Paxton has a huge issue that makes him problematic. If he could start 25-30 games and pitch 150-160IP, he’d be a great move.

But signing Paxton means you them have to sign someone to fill in for Paxton when he’s out. Who there? Maybe Keller?

The price is a tad lower, hopefully. I'll take anyone who has ever tasted success in the big leagues, however briefly, at this stage.

(Excluding those who are dead, retired etc.)

Keller is worse than internal options like Houck, Crawford and Pivetta. I think using one of them to fill in for Paxton is better than also signing Keller, who sucks.

Is not about Keller being the best or even one of. Just a pitcher I clearly like more than you…

I've never seen MVP pitch... what's missing in his repertoire that you like more from Keller?

A fastball that could get a speeding ticket, for one…

Right now per Cot's:

Mets 297

Dodgers 288

Yankees 287

I’m surprised the Mets can’t shake that top spot, even after dumping Scherzer and Verlander…

I’m surprised at how close NYY are.

I assume that figure includes Soto to some degree…

Probably. The judge extension was huge, but I guess most of the AAV is from over a couple years ago.

Soto, Judge, Cole, Stanton and Rodon account for roughly $170mill. The other 35 players on their roster account got the remaining $117mill-ish…

Brad Keller is a much better pitcher than I am. I will admit to that.

They are still paying a portion of those salaries I believe.

8/1/23:

Verlander - Mets will pay 35M of remaining 58M post trade and 17.5M if his '25 option vests.

Scherzer - Mets will pay 35M of remaining 57.5M (he took the '24 player option).
