And we might lose that guy in the Rule 5 draft today.

Heck the Yankees could take him right back…

Which guy is Rule 5 eligible?

Fitts was drafted in '21, Judice in '23 and Weissert was on the 40 man.

Per MLBTradeRumors:

Boston doesn’t need to add (Fitts) to the 40-man roster until next offseason to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft, but it’s possible he pitches his way into the MLB rotation mix at some point during the summer.

To quote Chad Finn, "There is no excuse for trading a generational player. Especially when you're the Boston Red Sox."

It was DUMB. I understand why we can't stop relitigating it. I don't think it's smart to keep Verdugo just because you traded Betts for him though.

What are you guys complaining about? MLBPipeling (the greatest of all prospect evaluations) says Dick Fitts is better than Luis Perales!

@BOSSportsGordo

Newly acquired Richard Fitts slots in as @MLBPipeline’s #10 Red Sox prospect and their #2 pitching prospect.

He’s behind Wikelman Gonzalez in their Sox pitching prospect rankings.

:cool:

The trade could have been worse:

@TonyMassarotti

Hmm. Think the Red Sox could have gotten Stanton for Verdugo?

Just remember this for the next time someone wants to quote this GOOBER.

He was the centerpiece? I thought the prize was the highly rated Jeter Downs who flamed out?

The funny thing is, Wong may end up being the largest prize.

The Yankees took Richard Fitts in the sixth round with the 183rd pick of the 2021 draft, 141 slots behind Ryan Bliss, Fitts' teammate at Auburn and an intriguing second base prospect for the Seattle Mariners.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=bliss-000rya

Bliss is projected to make his MLB debut in 2024 after posting these numbers split between Double A and Triple A this year in his age 23 season:

612 PA, .304/.378/.524/.902, 110 R, 23 HR, 86 RBI, 34 2B, 8 3B, 55 SB, 15 CS, 58 BB, 119 K

Bliss was the starting second baseman for the National League in the 2023 Futures Game before being sent to Seattle later that month in the Paul Sewald trade. The diminutive infielder was named Defensive Player of the Year in the Arizona Fall League where he slugged a grand slam in the championship play-in game.

The third of four Auburn Tigers taken in the 2021 draft was first baseman Tyler Miller, the ninth-round pick of the Red Sox.

I don't see a purpose in these type of posts.

Just wait until Wong is replaced by Teel and someone else. Then we can have this same conversation.

Good.

I think Jackson said Fitts was Rule 5 eligible in the Yankee thread…

Do people think Frazee kept “No No Nanette” on the stage for years just because he sold Babe Ruth to finance it?

whichever. If there's any one thing jh and/or the fo should be vilified for it's letting mookie betts get away.

I get the idea of tying up too much money in one player and the effect it has on future signings, but this is the boston red sox, a team where the fans will (begrudgingly) pay some of the highest ticket prices in baseball. But in return they expect to see star players and a team that's a contender every year.

Not extending him - or however we want to say it - was the first indication that jh is no longer striving for excellence in the brs. That attitude is how we got to where we are today. The big question now in my mind is whether all those empty seats in september sent a message to jh that the fans may not be willing to settle for second rate in exchange for high ticket prices.

Ohtani expected to "decide" by Sunday.

Maybe Yamo is signed shortly afterwards, perhaps by one of those who barely missed out on Ohtani.

agree

Letting guys like Pedro, Beltre, Damon and Ellsbury walk was questionable, at the time, but made some sense. Trading Manny had to happen.

Letting Betts walk was in a class all by itself.

I do think, had we gone out and spent the Betts, Price, kimbrell and Kelly money in 2020 and 2021, and maybe won a ring or come close in the last 4 years, we might cut JH a little slack, but the guy turtled it, after the trade.

Beltre is the only one that should have stayed.

For a guy that is supposedly a "baseball guy" he has some really dumb takes.

Oh yeah. What is particularly sad is that the two moves the Sox made were - on the surface - not crazy. Youk was a 5 win player who had handled 3B before. And Adrian Gonzalez was arguably the best 1B in the league. But both players - after good 2011s, fell off cliffs. Youk's body fell apart in particular.

Youk's collapse is one of the big developments that was a real gut punch to the team's plans for a bit there.

Agreed, even though he was here for just one year.

We've had some doozies that are still being talked about, like Lester and Bogey, but Betts blows them away.

Definitely has been a minute since he wasn't a pure hot taker

Both David Schoenfeld (ESPN) and Keith Law (Athletic) thought the deal was even enough ... Sox get some bullpen-ish arms for a guy they might very well have non-tendered, and the Yankees get a guy who could be valuable if you can find a platoon partner.

Lester didn't really come back to bite us, but he should have been a lifetime Red Sox and the contract he signed wasn't horrible.

@tylermilliken_

According to @ByRobertMurray, the Red Sox have sent minor-league reliever Ryan Ammons to the Mets.

Ammons was selected in the 10th round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Clemson. Worked as a reliever in college.

Has yet to debut in pro ball. No word on the return yet.
