The Sox wasted Ted's prime anyway. By the time DiMaggio retired, the Sox were on track to be basically a 4th place team for a decade. Trading Ted wouldn't have changed the outcome of the franchise all that much. The Sox were in the wilderness from 1952-1966.

Let's face it about Soto: it's almost worth it for Breslow to do what it takes to trade for and extend him -- just to keep him out of pinstripes.

Soto is a perfect fit for the short porch in the Bronx, and to complement Judge. Soto will make an even bigger impact in NY than if Cashman signs another pitcher, even Yamamoto.

Serious upside, but the average of 12 GS and 72 IP over the last 3 years seems like more of the same.

That beng said, I'd probably do it.

Glasnow's one of the top five starters in the division.

Wink is a reliever. Wikelman's an unopened wax pack.

I'd do it, but one year of a guy who can't stay healthy is not something we need more of.

We need dependable, innings eating and reliable starters.

The Red Sox have three open 40-man spots ahead of this evening’s Rule 5 deadline and I think they will protect three pitchers:

RHP Luis Perales

RHP Wikelman Gonzalez

LHP Shane Drohan

MLBTR listed possible winter trade candidates. Here are some I think we might be interested in:

SP

2. Burnes

4. S Bieber

5. Glasnow

6. Cease

16. SEA SP (B Woo, B Miller or E Hancock)

18. Blackburn

2B/SS

3. Willy Adames

9. H-S Kim (RHB)

10. Torres (RHB)

11. India (RHB)

14. J Polanco (L-R w power)

21. Donovan

N/R T Edman

OF

24. Luis Robert Jr. (RHB, but not likely traded)

1. Soto, but he is really a LF'er- something we have a lot of.

8. Grisham, CF but he bats lefty.

N/R Castellanos ®, Santander (L-R), Lane Thomas ®, T O'Neill ®, Margot ®

C

N/R S Perez

Lots of poor fielding 2Bmen on this list

Maybe likely lost to Rule 5?

Gambrell?

Scott?

Anyone else?

LOL.

I don't care we get us a few.

The Herald reports...

The Red Sox will have to navigate this pivotal offseason without a key member of their scouting department.

As first reported by ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel on Monday morning, Justin Horowitz is leaving Boston for Pittsburgh, where he’ll be the Pirates’ new director of amateur scouting,

Horowitz first joined the Red Sox organization as a baseball operations intern in 2012. By September 2020, he was special assistant of amateur scouting.

That Joe Jacques is still on the roster ahead of even one of these lottery tickets is making me lose faith in Breslow…

I'd keep Gambrell, Scott and maybe Penrod over Jacques and a couple others.

All 7 players who received a QO rejected them.

Ohtani

Bellinger

Chapman (reportedly turned down a $100+M 4 or 5 year extension offer.)

Gray

Nola

Snell

Hader

Does the QO's to these pitchers make Montgomery, ERod and Imanaga all that more appealing?

Yes, and I've already said the Sox should immediately repeat the ol Yoshida-overpay and lock up Imanaga... and then get the two former/future teammates to tag team affections to Yamamoto for a World (BC) champion reunion.

I’d keep Mauricio Llovera over Jacques, and I would have DFAd Llovera weeks ago. Right after Weiss and Gillaspie…

Yup

Drohan really fell off a cliff in the second half.

Scott is likely no better than any other catcher we can sign on a minor league deal.

Others are either too far down in the minors to be selected or just not promising to risk a 26 man roster slot in hopes they develop into something worthwhile.

I guess if Drohan and Penrod are not selected, nothing is lost, but what hopes do some of the bottom 3-5 on our 40 have?

MLB had a "Bold Offseason Prediction" article a few days back. Here were their calls:

Ohtani to Mariners

Soto traded to Yankees

Bregman traded

Giolito & Flaherty (HS teammates) both sign with Braves

Cincy signs Gray, ERod or Stroman

O's will sign Hader and add a top SP: Nola or Snell or a trade for Burnes or Bieber

Someone signs Rich Hill, and...

Drum roll....

Yamamoto to the Red Sox!

I would have let Gillaspie, Llovera, Jacques and Weiss go. Nothing going on there. Gambrell, Drohan and maybe Penrod seem to be more interesting to protect. Easy enough to DFA if they don’t work out this year.

Chris Hatfield “Surprising to me that Shane Drohan was left unprotected. You can squint and see why though - strike-throwing, ability to miss bats, and allowing home runs all regressed significantly in AAA from early dominance in AA.

That said, might get plucked in R5.”

Posted
Crag focused on bat missing ability in his early statements. Maybe an indicator as to why Drohan wasn’t protected and the direction the franchise is moving?

There is a chance, after we add 5-6 players, none of those guys will be around, anyway.

I'd still have protected Gambrell and Drohan to the last moment.

I guess, if they don't get selected, there is no issue.

If they get added, then it makes for a tougher decision when the Sox do acquire a player. (Not really. Dalbec can still be DFAd.)

That Breslow only added 2 players with 3 open spots could also mean there is a player he aims to select in Rule 5…

... or two -- perhaps saplings from the acreage of Cubs and Giants (former org of Brez' best bud and impending pitching coach A. Bailey)?
