This is all on Bloom. The bullpen is so gassed from having to pitch so much from the lack of depth from the starters. Not to mention the inept defense that is causing pitchers to throw more pitches. Big mess

Actually, tonight was all on Cora, but it feels like there's a Cora cult here.

And you continue to prove that you are somehow related to the idiot manager.

Go back and read my earlier post in which I said I didn't blame you or anyone else for wanting Cora's head.

I think it's pretty clear by now that Cora made up his mind to do this before the game started--but with caveats. If in fact Sale went, say, 6 innings and the Sox had more than a 1 run lead, he might have decided to go for the win. The same might have applied if Barraclough went, say, 2.1 or 3.1 scoreless innings and the Sox were still leading. Go for the win.

Bear Claw comes into the 5th and ends the inning. Good job. Cora brings him back in the 6th with the SOX leading and has no one warming up in the BP. How do you defend that crap managing?

Well, we agree on that. I agree it was all on Cora although I think he almost certainly discussed the game plan with Tek and the pitching coach.

Make no mistake, this was planned and by no means capricious or arbitrary. Cora wanted one more day to rest his bullpen because yesterday was also pretty much of a rest day with Murphy going 4 innings while giving up 6 runs.

That is exactly the reaction I had. Madness, sheer madness!!

But that doesn't describe Cora at all. He maps out everything and discusses everything with both Varitek and his pitching coach. I'm almost certain he decided before the game he was not going to try to save still another game when his starter couldn't go at least 5 innings--and, really, 6 or more innings.

Also relates to my comments in other forum about whether there is any sense of team in Boston with the revolving door, and disjointed management upstairs and on the field. Total guess but there may be some deep discord around this bunch

i think you nailed it with your earlier comments.

Let me get this straight. Cora sacrifices a winnable game tonight so that he might win tomorrow? You're right; he is a genius.

I can't resist saying this. I do not for a second believe I'm an expert on MLB. Far from it.

But this thread has convinced me I'm not quite as ignorant as I usually think I am.

Like everyone else, I was apoplectic when Cora left Barraclough in for the entire 6 runs in the 6th inning when the Sox started the inning with a 1 run lead.

But then it occurred to me that Cora always has reasons, usually good ones, for whatever he does. That's when I posted that the Sox are in the middle of 48 games with just 3 days off, that the rotation has not been eating innings the way they need to, and that the bullpen is at risk of collapsing. Plus I said Cora has done this same thing earlier this season. In fact, he left Murphy in for 4 innings and 6 runs yesterday--to give the rest of the bullpen a break--except Llovera, who pitched the 9th.

And I have convinced no one on talksox that Cora is not a raving idiot.

Managers are hired to be fired, and that's the way it should be. But I seriously doubt Cora gets the chop for this game. Leaving Barraclough in was draconian, but necessary.

Right. Like this was the 1st game Cora has thrown the white flag. You're probably correct that Corable won't get canned, but I can hope, can't I?

totally agree and you know he is going to be DFA'D right away so Bloom can bring in his next BBB reliever
No player in sports, except maybe OJ, deserved what Cora did to Bear Claw tonight.

Of course he has "thrown the white flag" before this game. That's the whole freaking point. The Sox are playing 48 games with just 3 days off, the rotation is not eating enough innings, and Cora only has one freaking bullpen.

Like you, I hated leaving Barraclough in for the 6th when he gave up 6 runs and before which the Sox had a 1 run lead. But, unlike you, I think Cora always has a reason, usually a good one, for whatever he decides. He did not want to waste his best arms when yet another starter couldn't go 5 innings and the Sox only had a 1 run lead.

Whatalotta. Barraclough knew exactly why he was out there and almost certainly was a willing participant. He pitched--and got hammered--to give the rest of the bullpen a break during an absolutely brutal schedule. Your comparison to OJ is unseemly.

Willing participant? This guy is barely an MLB player, threw 100 pitches out of the pen, got embarrassed and is trending all over social media. Plus he isn’t apart of the future. He’ll probably be DFA soon.

I don’t think he wanted this or that it will keep the 34 year olds career dreams alive…

Well that game certainly left an impression on everyone from the players, and coaches to the fans in the stands, and to everyone in Red Sox Nation last night, and not a good impression either. I can sum it up with one word. BOHICA.

Speaking for one and all, again.

Do you have a better word for it?

Well, I know there is at least one person who did not feel like you said we all felt, so maybe don't say "everyone."

I still felt the game itself left an impression one way, or the other on every Sox fan out there. Certainly on here, and I’ll bet on Cora, the coaches, and players too. Remember Raffy, and Jansen said the team needed pitching help. I sure there was more including Cora who felt the same way, but didn’t come out, and say it. They were right, and yes they know more than Bloom. What impression do you think they all have today? It’s probably a lot worse than BOHICA.

I'm sure the game had a bad effect on everyone, including me, but it was one game. It was actually a good one, until Bear Claw's meltdown. It's not the first time a team has offered up a sacrificial lamb to save the pen for the next few games.

If we lose these next two games, it will all be for not, and the hatch jobs will multiply exponentially.

I had higher hopes for this team than most, but I still did not project 90+ wins.

I'm happier with this team than I expected, because the players who are returning (Jansen, Martin, Urias, Reyes...) and who were big question marks (Casas, Duran, Bello, Crawford, Wink, Wong...) played well or better than I had hoped for.

I think our farm looks better, now than in March, despite several graduations.

I think the team is on the right path, but it sucks having to watch too many games like last night, knowing we were just 1-2 solid pitchers away from making this season more competitive than it has been.

I'm not happy, but I have really enjoyed watching this team. Despite losing Bogey, JD and Nate, this year was more fun. I hate thinking we will likely lose Turner, but with Yoshida and casas looking more and more like DH's, going forward, I think it has to happen.

I'm still holding onto a sliver of hope for 2023, but it's not looking good, at all.

Yes it was only 1 game, but every game counts, and the season is getting shorter. The thing is, which I’ve been saying for a long time now is that the players, coaches, and manager is playing for right now. I wouldn’t have blamed any of them last night if they all would have walked off the field, and looked up, and gave Bloom the middle finger as they did. I’ll worry about next year when this season is over. To me keeping Turner is a must despite Yoshida, Raffy, and Casas deficiencies on D. It wouldn’t bother me at all to see them trade Yoshida for some starting pitching. Turner’s bat should play for a couple more years, and produce more than Yoshida anyway.
