The NESN commentators just showed a slide depicting the number of pitches thrown by each reliever over the last week.

So Old Red has a point. If you count Pivetta, the Sox now have 6 starters, but they ain't going very many innings--except for Bello's 7 innings in his last start.

The other thing to remember is that on August 4, 24 days ago, the Sox began a string of 48 games with just 3 days off interspersed. That's a killer.

It's too bad no one in the front office could read the schedule before then and realize how important it would be to add a MAJOR LEAGUE reliever to the bullpen.

Leaving Barraclough in there was essentially punting the game. What the hell was that?
It has been a rare occurrence that I have bestowed the nickname “Forfeit” on a Red Sox pitcher, but I think it fits Barraclaugh perfectly.

Oh great, they put him back out there for another inning? Yeah f*** this I'm gonna go watch that Bishop Sycamore documentary. You guys have a good night

I think it applies to the manager more than any one pitcher.

He wants to give him the opportunity to raise his ERA!

Hit Bregman 2x in 2 innings ? You might be inviting some immature retaliation. Devers should take the rest of the night off.

Those HBPs were our retaliation.

Once Barraclough is out of the game Cora will have to use a position player to pitch. Obviously by following Cora's logic he cannot use a

pitcher unless the Sox are winning in the 9th.

Given how Bloom and Henry are running this team I'd sy Varitek is far too smart to jump into this fiasco

One can blame Bloom and JH for some things, but they're not the blame for horrible managing.

They at least should give back the money of the tickets. Cora literally gave up the game in the 6th inning. Edited by iortiz

One more time.

Yes, I understand how absolutely weird leaving Barraclough in is and I sure don't blame SPLENDIDSPLINTER and others for wanting the head of one Alex Cora.

But I offer the following just in case there is some method to this insanity--

1. The Sox have in fact been screwed by the schedule--48 games with just 3 days off.

2. I don't keep track, but it is entirely possible Cora and his pitching coach and Varitek all agree the bullpen is at their limit. See 1 above as well as the fact that the starters haven't been eating innings.

3. Cora has in fact done this before this season--kept a reliever in despite the deluge of runs. This time is different because the Sox in fact had the lead, 4-3, when Barraclough came in. But the principle is still the same. If you are trying to revive/rest your bullpen, you may have have to pay for it in lost games.

4. It would be interesting to read/hear what the players say after the game, if anything. Or, for that matter, Cora.

I am not sticking up for Cora but he can only play what he's got. I'd fire the whole works of them.

Give the Claw Man credit. He threw 67 pitches of batting practice over just 2 innings.

It wasn’t even good batting practice. He walked 4 guys and hit 3. He actually gave up more combined HBP and walks (7) than Hits (6)

31 games left and playing a team ahead of them for the Wild Card and Cora decides to forfeit the game? I don’t get it. Am I missing something?

Yup, the PO's. If not making the playoffs causes a change in managers, I'm all for it.

This ^ is a bunch of whooey. The only possible explanation is that Cora wants to fatigue the Stros from running the bases and possibly induce some pulled muscles to make it easier to take the next two games.

Hopefully they just leave him in there, take the loss, DFA him tomorrow, and have a full rested bullpen for the next 2 games.

I mean, why take him out now?

I think Max has outlined it, with the key point being that starters , perhaps other than Bello's last have not controlled enough innings, including Sale and his damnable stress reaction.

Why bring him into the game in the first place?

I’ll do you one better - why promote him to Boston at all?
