The goal would be to have Sale and Pivetta take a whole game between them. Sale goes 3, Pivetta goes 6. Or Sale goes 2, Pivetta goes 6, someone gets a garbage time inning, everyone else gets the day off. You need that kinda day if you're going to be leaning heavily on the pen in other games.

Kluber took the loss in Game 1 for WOO today. 3 runs in 2 innings. His heater had an 87 mph avg, max of 89. All velo was down from the YTD avg.

So Kluber is cooked.

Oh well, I think Matt Harvey is available to be signed.

He might be but that start didn't prove anything one way or the other.

His pitching has been horrible all year. There's no value left in his arm. The start proved that his velo is only trending even worse.

I've been anticipating a starting pitcher at the deadline......and the feeling of waiting for them to sign a pitcher all offseason met with Kluber has re-traumatized me.

They probably add a #4ish guy at best. Which will be great if Sale could come back healthy, IF Sale could come back healthy.

Yeah, no guarantees that the injured guys come back at 100% or don't take 4-6 weeks to get there.

The Angels, in an honestly worst position than the Sox, struck first and got Giolito.

Last kick at the cat with Ohtani.

STL

CHC

KCR

OAK

CWS

and maybe a few others.

@JeffPassan

The Milwaukee Brewers are acquiring first baseman Carlos Santana from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources confirm to ESPN, with 18-year-old shortstop Jhonny Severino headed back to Pittsburgh. First on the news was @JMackeyPG.

PIT was absent from moon's list.

It’s very unlikely the Sox have a newly acquired pitcher available before August 3rd….

Lots of pitching deals being done before the deadline.

Isn't pitching--specifically, a decent starter-- the one thing the Sox need the most?

IMO, yes and double yes.

Notin was saying it was hard to get a team to trade before deadline day. It does not look that way.

It looked like an overpay for Giolito and Lynn is not what I have in mind, so I’m fine with missing out on those two.

yes and no. With Kutter rounding into shape we could definitely still use a guy, but we actually have 4 good starters (or 3 good starters and whatever the hell Pivetta is).

If we can take Murphy out of the frankenstarter role we'll probably be better for it, having bullpen games every 5 races is going to be hard on the pen. But we do have some guys coming back soon, especially Chris Sale, so that should help.

Well so Gary only one team has been offloading, and they’ve done with well in those deals, getting Dodgers #8, Astros #4 and Baseball America #89 while giving up no one better than Lucas Giolito. And they’re probably not done yet, and Song be until the deadline Bell rings…

Do we think the Sox are done with injuries for the year?

We're about as inured against injuries as a team can be with multiple starters predicted to trickle back over the next month. It all comes down to what we get out of Murphy of course but right now we're mostly looking for a 5th starter unles a great deal lands in our lap.

No.

The trickle back of injured pitchers is likely to start with to her useless Corey Kluber. And before anyone meaningful gets back, the Sox have to hope and pray that James Paxton doesn’t get soap suds in his eyes…

kluber will likely be used from the pen, as he was before going on th IL.

he may be DFA'd if we ever get 95% healthy.

Paul Blackburn. Do you not read my stuff?

You're gonna love this, notin: your guy Paul Blackbyrd pitches tonight against Chris Flexen.

I’m not a Paul Blackburn Fan. I’m a Paul Blackburn Predictor. When the weatherman predicts snow, it isn’t because he likes snow.

That said, I see where you’re going, and still do not understand why Flexen wasn’t worth a waiver claim…

But you want him to pitch well because it makes your prediction looks better.
