There are no sustainable skills. Players inevitably age and get hurt and all that stuff.

Beckett's postseason record remains one that any pitcher would want to have. Instrumental to 2 rings for 2 teams.

No doubt.

He was not over the hill when he lost that “sustainable skill.”

But he was apparently pitching hurt in the 2008 postseason. There was doubt about whether he'd be able to pitch Game 6 or not.

Maybe all the guys called chokes were hurt, too.

Everyone's probably dinged up a bit by postseason time. I still have no idea how Curt Schilling delivered that last start against the Rockies with 3 pounds of ground beef where his right shoulder shoulda been.

Beckett's postseason record was 7-3 with a 3.07 ERA and a .94 WHIP.

Would he have to be 10-0 to be clutch in your books?

Even Bob Gibson was "only" 7-2.

Is the idea to make the standards so high that no one can reach them?

All I said was he was on his way to immortality, before he lost his clutch skill set.

Right, there's no hyperbole there! :D

Both Genesis Cabrera (Cardinals) and Yonny Chirinos (Rays) were recently DFAd. Both are struggling this year, but have also shown some effectiveness in the recent past.

And both are upgrades over Tayler Scott/Jake Faria types. Probably even over Joe Jacques.

Cabrera’s fastball is down 2mph from his stellar 2021 season, from 97.7 to 95.7mph. Chirinos’ FB is actually a little up over his 2022 season, but so are his walks, while his Ks are way down.

Should Bloom take a chance on either? Chirinos makes the most sense, since his issues are clearly not reduced velocity and he’s right-handed. But will (should?) Bloom move on him? I do have my doubts…

It may be worth it to get 2-3 starts out of one of these two. Their time might be short, as they could be DFA'd once pitchers start returning from the IL.

Bloom should try to acquire both, but I'm not sure if either make it to the Sox.

That depends who has open 40 man roster spots, or spots they could open. Salaries are not outrageous (Chirinos - $1.3mill, Canrera - $950K), but might deter the especially cheap.

That Flexen cleared waivers twice dura make me wonder who gets claimed and who doesn’t…

Yes, I should never doubt the capacity of MLB owners to cheapen out on their franchise.

Steve Cohen is The Man!

Not to John Henry and the other owners. They hate that he uses his money!

@ChrisCotillo

Red Sox announce Kutter Crawford will start Friday, James Paxton will go Saturday. Sunday is TBD (Pivetta bulk day).

So Paxton and Crawford are flipped.

Wonder if it is matchups , or is Paxton not quite right physically ?

With a day off, 3 games, day off, 2 games, day off, then road trip out west, I'm thinking flipping them allows Paxton to get extra rest in following GS'd, too:

7/21 NYM Crawford

7/22 NYM Paxton (+2 days rest)

7/23 NYM (Pivetta as "bulk" pitcher +1)

OFF

7/25 ATL Bello (+1)

7/26 ATL Crawford

OFF

7/28 @SFG Paxton (+1)

7/29 @SFG Pivetta (+1)

7/30 @SFG Bello

7/31 @SEA Crawford

8/1 @SEA (Trade Deadline) New SP'er?

8/2 @ SEA New SP'er or Paxton

OFF

Rest him and give him the best opportunity to look good before the trade deadline. Also, he's not the most physically reliable guy to begin with. If you can rest him you should.

I agree!!!! Flip him for decent value before he blows another tire

Send him to the LAD with whatever else it takes to get Sheehan from LA

The Dodgers didn’t build a franchise that gets to the postseason every year by trading players like Emmett Sheehan for broken down rental vets like Paxton.

Per BTV, Sheehan will cost Yorke. Unfortunately the Dodgers need Sheehan more right now…

I don’t see teams in the running giving MLB pitching…

My guess is all these guys will be heavily shopped:

2 month Rentals w BTV values

9.7 Giolito CWS

8.8 Montgomery STL

8.5 Snell SDP

6.1 Stroman CHC

5.7 ERod DET

2.1 W Miley MIL

Maybe some of these:

56.0 Keller (2.3 years remaining) PIT

51.4 Cease (2.3) CWS

40.7 Burnes (1.3) MIL

36.8 Musgrove (4.3) SDP

35.1 Sandoval (3.3) LAA

26.6 S Gray (4.3) WSH

24.1 Canning (2.3) LAA

22.4 Sears (5.3) OAK

21.9 Lynch (4.3) KCR

20.0 Singer (3.3) KCR

10.7 Blackburn (2.3) OAK

4.4 S Lugo (1.3) SDP

2.7 Houser (1.3) MIL

-34.5 Verlander (2.3) NYM

I only bring up Sheehan because on an article titled "each team's top prospect likely to be dealt" and Sheehan was the name for the Dodgers. Just one person's opinion I know but if we could get him for Yorke I'd JUMP HOOPS for that. Heck they can even have Jordan too.
