Bobby D started out as a 3B, so it didn’t help his D moving to 1B. It doesn’t work with everyone.

True, but right now, we have some of the worst corner IF'ers in MLB on D.

It's not just the metrics that show it. Eye test, too.

That’s because Dalbec couldn’t catch a cold if he was naked in a Norway. Devers will be fine at 1b. Book it.

Maybe even watch it… ;)

Indeed. The problem with Devers' D is his arm not glove or range.

I think he'd be better than "fine" at 1B, in a very short time.

Completely disagree. Devers and Casas have two of the best bats on this team and are adequate at 3b and 1b. Nothing needs to be fixed.

You want something worth fixing? How about that rotten bat hefted by our starting SS? That's a much bigger problem than 3b and 1b defense.

The Sox have a worse record with Story at SS than they had with Kike at SS.

If the Sox do the right thing and bring in a GM from outside the org, the new regime may give certain players one more year to prove (and improve) themselves, before making radical changes. That very much includes Chaim Bloom players like Story, Yoshida and Verdugo -- contracts be damned.

JH and Co. know that part of the revamping might require eating some money and cutting a lot of losses from their annual 5th-placers.

I checked the rule book. It turns out they’re still allowed to bat if they play 1b and DH..

As for Story, later see what he’s like when he actually goes thru a Spring Training and a normal season…

Agreed, but to be honest he wasn't super-impressive with the stick in 2022 except for one hot stretch.

What is adequate to you on D?

Just because Devers and Casas still end up being an overall plus, due to great offense, doesn't mean they can't have even greater value playing at other positions.

Max, really? Nothing needs to be fixed?

We are under .500 and headed for another last place finish. Even an optimist, like myself, can see a lot needs fixing.

Nobody wants to bench the bats of Devers or Casas. I'm not even for moving Casas to DH in 2024, except when "resting," and that is when I'd like to see Devers try his hand at 1B.

Max, this is the worst argument I have ever seen you repeat.

Most batters would see their numbers tumple, if you took away their best 10-11 game stretch- maybe not as much as Story in 2022, but still.

If you take away that 10-11 game stretch, and look at Story's RBI per PA, he was in the upper half of players on the Sox.

He started the season off very badly (.545 after 24 games- sound familiar?)

He had that super hot streak, but also afterwards, he had a long streak near the end where he did okay (around .720ish?)

We all expect better than that to earn $140M/6, and he has some make-up work to do, but GG D at SS and a .720 OPS would be a major improvement over 2023's SS overall production.

Max has a partial point, but he is stretching it a wee bit.

Story has played much better D than Kike, obviously, but Story's offense has been so bad that he has an fWAR of -0.2. (Kike's was -1.8.)

Story did post an fWAR of 2.4 in 94 games last year, so yes, if he can play like 2022 he'd be fine.

It's not like Kike was winning games with his bat.

We won despite Kike.

And he didn’t have a Spring Training in 2022 either…

Too many defensive metrics out there. How reliable are they ? OAA for heaven sakes. Which pencil neck geek came up with that one ?

That's actually a pretty good one.

Posted
How would we know?

Because OAA uses the statcast system, and takes into consideration a fielder's position before calculating the outcome of individual fielding chances.

Okay, thanks.

How do you think Raffy is going to age in a Red Sox uniform? Devers for ever like a fine wine, or Nevers Dever like some stinky old cheese?

Not well, I'm afraid. Everyone seems to agree now he's a DH. $313.5 million is a lot of dough for a DH. Should have spent it on Betts, obviously. Thanks Henry!

The Red Sox had to sign Raffy, but I was Never a Devers for ever guy.

Mistakes like losing Mookie Betts tend to compound themselves. Now we're paying the same money to a vastly inferior player.

And will for 10 more years.
