The Paxton signing wasn't all that puzzling, we're seeing more funky deals like these with guys who have injury issues but upside. The Jays contract with Chad Green being a recent example.

Guys like Drew Smyly and Michael Pineda have made a pretty good living off of those “Pay Me Now and I’ll Be Healthy Later” contracts…

Maybe because Verdugo is 4 years younger and there is hope he will tap into some more potential…

After bulking up (against Red Sox orders), he still was only in the 50th percentile in Exit Velo in 2022. If he wants to get to 20 HR's, he may have to switch home ballparks.

We could have stayed under the tax line much more easily with no Paxton

Or added the $10 mil to the one-year Bogaerts offer.

See, this is what fans mean when they acknowledge the Red Sox are still spending -- and still wasting.

I know. But then we wouldn't have him this year for $4 mill, which could turn out to be a good deal.

Obviously if they really wanted to get under the tax line last year they could have traded Bogey, Eovaldi, JD etc. I guess we can go through that discussion all over again. :P

So we're assuming that Paxton is useless already?

To get under the CBT, they only needed to dump JD at the deadline for a low A guy.

You mean so far...

... could the wasted $6mil spent elsewhere be worth 6 more wins last year? What if two of those were against Tampa -- how's that for a wild card?

The 6 mill could be recovered this year if Paxton does OK. I'm trying to be optimistic for now. I may re-join the angry rabble later LOL

I know, I know... there's only so much posters can write about this time of year after "If, if, if..."

But when reporters get dissed off by ownership and gripe about it, it's certainly fodder for forums called talksox...

Henry got a lot of respect for the championships with him as owner. However , he seems like kind of an odd duck who doesn't relate well to the average Sox fan. So when things start to go sour , the fans will express their anger towards him. Especially when the team finishes in the cellar , 21 games behind their arch-rivals. And when you seem unable and/or unwilling to retain your best and most popular players , it kind of boils over.

With all the nonsense Henry has said lately, it might be time that someone counted the marbles in his bag

It might take years, and some we can't even lift.

Am I the only Sox fan still thrilled, and I mean extremely thrilled, he's the owner?

I think to some Red Sox fans Henry has worn out his welcome. He doesn’t seem to have the same passion as he did when he first came to Boston, and there is always the what have you done for me lately crowd. 2018 seems like a long, long time ago.

You are right though it could take a long time to show, we’ll just have to wait and see when he starts wearing a beanie with a propeller on top and carrying a rubber chicken around

They warned us what would happen after the Sox finally won it all.

Yeah, the last few times I've hung around JH, he seemed devoid of passion.

BTW, 2013 was a long time ago in 2018.

The same as 2023 is from 2018.

He's the best thing that has happened to the Sox in the last century.

Ooh-fah to all the doubters.

Henry Lover!

I was pissed about the way it went down with Bogey, but I'm still a Henry supporter.

4 rings after there were none before him. Yeah, I'll take that.

Do you really think Henry has the same drive today as he did when he first came to Boston when he wanted to take down the evil empire, and win championships? I also think the game has changed a lot more from 2018 to today then it did from 2013 to 2018 especially financially. To some fans Henry has a lifetime pass for the 4 championships the Red Sox has won under his ownership, and that is fine, but to others like I said earlier Henry has worn out his welcome, and they think it’s time for a new Era under a new owner, and that is fine too. Getting Boo’d when he shows his face in public I’m thinking is an embarrassment to his ego.

Getting a new owner is more likely to be a step or several back. There are more Bob Nutting’s and Bob Castellini’s than there are Steve Cohen’s out there..

Nobody is perfect. I'm sure JH has made many choices I'd disagree with as a man, businessman and Sox owner, but to me, he brought the change that was needed to the Sox that led to 4 rings. That makes him the best thing that has happened to the Sox in a century, IMO.

Does the guy get a lifetime free pass?

Obviously not to many fans, but to me, I haven't even begun to think it's time for a change, or that he has "lost" anything over the years.

Just about everything that has happened in the last few years has happened before. JH has gone up and down with spending and has timed it pretty close to right- usually when there is a group of young players about to make an impact. It's taking longer for the farm to get us to that point than many wanted or thought it would take, but I do think we are getting close.

Ask me again in a year or two, but I'm 100% behind Henry as the Sox owner.

Yes. IMO he is just waiting to pounce, like he has in the past (several times.)

Why didn't he lose the "drive" you speak of after 2007 or 2013. In fact, there were rumblings after 2014 and 2015, then BAM! We sign Price and the next window opens.

IMO, a window will open, again. I'm getting antsy, too, but I'm cutting this guy a break (and a few more to go.)

#1. Henry has a lot more things in the fire than he did in 2004, or 2007.

#2. The game has changed, by leaps, and bounds in the last 10 years.

The ole "be careful what you wish for" comes to mind.

I understand fan frustration. I'm frustrated, too, despite expecting a lull was coming after 2016-2018. Maybe 2021 got my hopes up, too high, but I still think we have been heading down a path towards more sustainable winning. Maybe the farm is all hype and empty promises, but I respect the plan they chose.

Yes, mistakes were made, along the way that kept us from more enjoyable seasons along the way. The Lester and Bogey situations are burned in all our minds, but we've also made some good to great choices about letting some stars go (Pedro, Agon, Beckett,) even some younger ones like Ellsbury. It's a business to JH and most owners. Compared to 20-25 other current owners, JH is clearly a better owner. I guess I just don't find myself dreaming we find the next Steve Cohen to buy the team.
