Two year deal, $32 mill at risk. It's not like he went after Judge...

Okay now we got an actual closer, and I’m thrilled with that. A for effort for Bloom. I still would like to see at least 1 more starter added, and put Whitlock back in the pen, which I’ve said it’s where he belongs, and then we still have to get some bats. I’m hoping Jansen still has something left in the tank.

Starters are currently:

Sale

Paxton

Whitlock

Bello

Pivetta

My concern is more towards Paxton not being able to keep his role as starter. I think Whitlock should be fine as a third starter. Yes, they do need to sign an SP though!

On one hand the team is paying $17.5M a year to someone who has not been "very good" in 5 years. On the other hand, he is still above average and the bullpen did not have enough of even that.

Agree on Paxton, and there is always concern for Sale just being able to get to the mound.

Dave's final gift.

I think that's why Bloom said he needs to find a reliable guy that can provide innings. We should also probably expect one of the younger guys to function as a 5th starter again at some point.

So your pejorative about him having a bad heart was more about him having ill intentions against opposing hitters then?
it wasn’t a pejorative. I was just noting that he has a heart condition. I am more than a bit surprised that Bloom would sign a 35 year old with a heart condition who is on a decline.

edit: Old with a bad heart— he is still an improvement

It's a little surprising, but $32 million is not crazy money by the standards being set this offseason. We're through the looking glass.

I have a lot of concern about Whitlock being able to carry a heavy workload over an entire season. I’d be thrilled if he could give the team 150 innings.

Absolutely. 150 is a good target for him.

His OPS Against in 2022 was second best in his last 4 years. It is way better from '21-'22 than '19-'20.

He may very well "be in decline," but in some areas, he hasn't shown it. Even at 90-95%, he's a vast improvement over what we have. The only question is will he do it.

He was probably the 2nd or 3rd best RP'er on the market, this winter.

Sounds about right.

If we need to put him in the pen for a while to limit his inning, that should be fine, but we need to add a solid SP for that to happen. We aren't getting 28+ starts from our current projected rotation.

I give Bloom credit . I think he realized what has been apparent to me . That the bullpen is the number one problem on this team. And a good closer is the cornerstone of the pen. There are some age and health concerns with Jansen , but he is top ten in all time closers. He knows how to get those final outs. Now I feel more confident that Bloom will sign Bogaerts and make an attempt to return this team to the top.

Agree 100%, and signing Bogey, and Raffy long term has to be done even if it cost more now than it would have before. The market has gotten bigger, and more expensive for everyone. The Yankees ponied up for Judge, and now it’s time for JH to do the same for Bogey, and Raffy.

I hope this list isn't projected on any smartboards in a front office planning room. The Red Sox would be foolish to expect anything from Sale and Paxton right now unless it's a bonus.

They're losing Eovaldi and Wacha so have to add two starters minimum... plus a third new starter for insurance for the other three guys -- two of whom will be attempting to complete their first full seasons of MLB workloads (one coming off surgery). Maybe one of the newcomers can be Mata...

If you get 1 full year combined from Paxton, and Sale would be a bonus, and that’s a big if, so agree with the need of 2 starters. As they found out last year you can never have enough starters. Add Hill to the other two, and you may get a full year out of the three.

Only 62 guys threw 150 innings last year. If he gets close, it's a good problem to have.

The Sox have reported interest in bringing Vaz back.

In comparison with what else is out there, I'm fine with it.

I am fine with bringing back Vasquez and Bogey. Then Bloom needs to do some work on the rotation and the corner OF spot with a big bat.

Nate, too?

Let's have the same team back plus Jansen, Martin, Joely and maybe Conforto. Good enough?

(I think not.)

You still like Conforto?

No.

He missed last year, wasn’t very good in 2021 and isn’t much of an outfielder when playing easier fields than RF at Fenway.

If he was adversely affected by the shift in 2021, he might be an upgrade over Hosmer at DH…

Do I need to keep reminding you who is still available for RF? Gold Glove defense. Power bat. And more K’s than every word in the Hawaiian language combined…

And he'll age like fine wine, right?

If I was directing the question to you, I'd have said Gallo.
