Hopefully Sox can win a few games and mess with Yankees division title hopes

Wasn't this almighty Yankees team supposed to win 120 games at one point? Embarrassing.

Almost as embarrassing as finishing last in the division behind the mighty O's and their $44M team salary.

No, this was to be expected. Worst to First to Worst just as foretold by the story of Ben Cherington.

I guess, would you rather (a) start off a race realizing your shoes were tied together or (B) get a commanding early lead and celebrate too early a la Leon Lett?

People were talking this Yankees team up as one of the all time great Yankees squads at one point.

The Sox have sucked all year. Yankees not living up to the hype is all we've got to hold onto right now unfortunately.

To be fair nobody was picking the Yankees to win the division before the season started either. Everyone thought the Jays were gonna run away with the division, and that the Rays would be good again, and that the Yankees would be meh. So by preseason standards the Yankees have outperformed expectations. They've of course fallen short of their midseason expectations (at the very least I thought they'd still hold the #1 seed in the AL) but unless they blow the division it'll still be a successful regular season. Playoffs are a different story that we'll have to wait and see about..

The Jays are the perennial winners of the offseason who underperform during the year and become also rans. I'm only concerned about the Rays and the Yankees for the most part. Toronto has a few great pieces, but their farm is the worst in this division. Long term, Orioles could be a threat, but the ownership of that team is just an embarrassment.

The greatest team in the history of this season's first half went from winning three out of every four games to below .500 in the second half. Since June 14, three months ago, the Yankees have gone 40-40... only 3 1/2 games better than the miserable Red Sox.

New York soared early when every pitcher looked headed for a career year before inevitable injuries, regression, and one dumb trade got in the way. A main reason for the improvement is the Yanks upgraded defense at the two most important positions -- catcher and shortstop -- and finally stopped pretending they could contend with lead hands there instead. They're still an all-or-nothing offense, and are trying to become the first AL club since '05 to win a World Series with team hit totals below the league average.

Red Sox fans can at least hope that the Twins don't make the playoffs, so NY won't have any automatic postseason wins. The only guarantee is that the next time Boston has a great start, I'll never waste my time joining a Yankees forum just to taunt regular posters who love baseball so much they watch, talk about and type about their favorite team all year, good or bad.

Pivettabout it. I believe Nick is near the top in games started this season. Tonight is his 29th start.

Just checked; his 29 starts are tied with 5 other guys for most games started.

Unfortunately, I'm getting the Yankem feed. The bozos in the booth keep criticizing Fenway for giving up HR's even though their Yankem Park has an embarrassingly short RF fence. Then one of the clowns says, but both of those HR'S weren't Fenway homers. Hard to criticize NESN as long as there are morons like the ones working for YES. Edited by SPLENDIDSPLINTER

Boy, do you have that right.

So far, an absolutely fascinating game, which I did not expect. I figured Cole to shut our guys down, but not so Pivetta with the Yankees (excuse my spelling). Lots of game left, however.

Baseball can really surprise, by that I mean Pivetta's useless knuckle curve, which he just four straight of to K Cabrera. Earlier, he had trouble getting it in the zone. There is no substitute for how the pitcher and catcher can work together to get the most out of what the pitcher had on any given night. I don't know if Wright was smart or lucky, but calling for 4 straight was genius, to say nothing of Pivetta's execution.

Lefty bats have both Sox dingers and all 3 rbi's.

Pivettaboutit. Is that the first time? Another gem. 29's a pretty big number--agree.

What are they saying about their catcher?
