Hosmer was a good move because it cost nothing to get him, and you paid him the league minimum. He was Casas insurance. If his value went up, great, It didn’t….whatever.

It was never an earth shattering acquisition to begin with so it’s whatever with me. I actually think this is a good sign, they are making room for someone on the roster.

They made room for Wyatt Mills, a reliever they got from KC for Wallace.

I think he ends up being traded.

I'm not sure what they see in Mills, and I, too liked Wallace, but these are just fringe deals. I was thinking we'd be the ones trading a 40 man guy for a non one.

I'm still waiting for something more substantial.

Mills was dfa’d by the Royals I wouldn’t expect to much

Twins are shopping Max Kepler. Probably actually gives you what I was dreaming JBJ was. Good defense in right, probably hits much better against righties in 2023. Hosmer gone opens up DH for Yoshida, who I think could get some reps in LF and DH.

Also wouldn’t hate Yoshida/Kike/Verdugo outfield either. Would really like a bench bat who can pick in the OF though and an upgrade at DH in that case. Not much left out there

It's not uncommon for a player to be DFA'd before a trade.

I'm not expecting great things, but we did get Schreiber off waivers.

I wouldn't hate it either, especially if Cora can get himself to think about sitting Dugo vs at least a few lefties, it may work out, but isn't is better to just add a RF'er not a DH. The D would improve at 2 positions.

He's a very good defender and another lefty, but he's got better hopes than JBJ had, last winter.

He has a 98 OPS+ since 2020t, 96 since 2021 and 93 in 2022. Not a good trend, but he'll only be 30 on opening day.

He would not be my first choice, but what choices are left?

If getting him allows us to sign Kluber, fine.

I suspect Verdugo’s .693 vs LHP will go up once he stops seeing constant shifts…

Park has been traded twice this off-season after being DFAd…

Will it ever reach Refsnyder splits?

He’s a great defender with some pop, would love a platoon with him and Rfs in Right. Let Verdugo stay in LF and Yoshida can DH a lot.

Kepler + Maeda have a BTV of +0.6 combined.

Maybe they'd take Hosmer or Downs of both for both of them.

I'm not sure if we ever resolved the luxury tax issue with Hosmer........but Cot's 'available money' will go up by $5M now to $48M as soon as he's off of our books.

Not many teams are faced with luxury tax penalty for 2023 so picking up Hosmer for minimum wage but additional tax money attached will have no consequences to that team.

Famous line from the movie "Rounders"......"Give the man his money". Devers is projected to earn $16.5M in his arbitration year 3. Just tack on another $20M and call it a day.

IT'S REALLY NOT COMPLICATED. WE'RE BIG MARKET BALL CLUB. ONE CONTRACT AT $35M WILL NOT SINK US.

What exactly is the downside? Is he going to forget how to hit? Will he load up on tacos and get fat? I think he played hurt in 2022, at least he was not 100%.

We'll still have $20M left to acquire couple more players. (assuming we wanted to get below the tax line).

15 Years...Devers

06 Years...Casas

06 Years...Story (counting option year)

06 Years...Whitlock (counting club option for 2 years)

06 Years...Bello

05 Years...Yoshida

05 Years...Houck

04 Years...Schrieber

This would be the start of our core group to go after another title.....

I did my very best to resolve it for ya Nick, posted a link to an article explaining the change in the new CBA and pointed out that Bloom would simply not touch him with that kind of tax hit attached...

I'm all for Devers Forevers, and one selling point to getting him to extend would be to start the extension in 2023 with a bigger salary than the arb would have given him.

Extension, now:

$340M/10 ($34M AAV for 10 years)

Extension after 2023:

$16M in 2023

$324M x9 ($36M AAV for 9 nyrs)

Same total money. Extending now, helps the AAV starting in 2024 and for 9 years. Extending no, gives Devers more money up front, and with inflation so high, that's a much better thing for him.

Personally, I'd even go 12 years at $32M. He might take $30M x 12 or 13 yrs. Too bad we didn't lock him up before he saw what people got, this winter.

Posted
If he forgets how to hit or gets fat he's only hurting himself for his free agency.

I was alluding to his performance after he signs his mega deal. Not getting fat before the extension.

I wonder if the Red Sox dumped Hosmer because they would rather bring in Dominic Smith, a player they tried to trade for last season.

Did they really try to get Dominic Smith? Or was that just more clickbait?

Posted
It wasn’t his west move (obviously), but I was not happy with this deal at all. Hopefully Mills surprises me…

Our west moves were Mookie and Xander...

I can’t lock on typo. Just know I’m so fluent I understand perfectly.

Although I disagree on Bogaerts, since I am not sold that ever really wanted him back…

On this clickbait media world, I am saying I don’t we ever get the full story, especially for something as discreet as contract negotiations…

You're right. I should've said he's a politician... except you pre-empted that counter with discreet...

... somewhere, a billionaire owner pines for the days of Stan Musial, forever reserved to play for the same club by an ancient clause (the same one that kept Santa returning home to Mrs. every winter).
