Yes, they have the right to maximize earnings. I just wish that maximizing earning wasn't the only consideration. Some of these players come across as greedy and ego driven.

It's the same in any industry. A prospective employee will consider earnings among other considerations in choosing a place of employment.

Who here thinks Seager was worth almost double Semien and more than double Story & Baez? (Of course, not per year, but still...)

I am seriously astounded that GMs are willing to give out the types of contracts that they do. I am still in shock that the Dodgers gave Mookie that contract in the midst of a pandemic. Utterly shocked.

I don't think there are other considerations with most of the ballplayers. I think it's the most money, period.

The average joe probably doesn't have prospective employers across the country bidding for their services.

Probably not. But I'm not sure what your point is.

When Sale is ready to go , what about making him the closer ? Someone suggested this a couple of years ago and it was shouted down at that time. But it may be time to re-visit the idea. I think Chris has the right mentality for the job . It would fill a glaring need and maybe stabilize the bullpen. It would limit his innings , help to keep him strong and healthy and maybe prolong his career. It worked for Eck , all the way to Cooperstown. Obviously , Sale is getting paid much more that even the best closers , but there is nothing you can do about that now. He is going to get paid regardless. What say you ?

I understand that at this point it is a sunk cost, but $30M for a closer?!!

I'm not sure how great of an idea it is to have a guy coming off TJS to be able to go every day or 2 at a moment's notice. Maybe he can do it? IDK. He also didn't inspire that much confidence in me last year.

He looked okay to me, considering being away for so long, but towards the end, he seemed to get worse, not better.

Paxton tore his lat and is out for the year he’ll likely opt into his option for next year at $4mil

The genius that is Chair Bloom. How many more moves of his will not work out before his next birthday?

What's the estimated time it takes to recover from that? (Or do you every fully recover?)

Paxton has such a history of being out sick, it is always risky to sign him .

True, but I thought I read somewhere that the way his contract was structured it’s no more/less of a hit against the cap next year whether we pick up the option or buy it out. Mine as well spin the wheels.

Not seeing Paxton in a Red Sox uniform in an MLB game was very foreseeable.

4-6 weeks but then he'd have to build up again

Thanks. So, until his next injury, this one shouldn't stop him from being getting hurt somehow else before opening day, right?

As far as I can tell, if the Sox decline the option, they're on the hook for 6 million for 2022, and the tax hit for 2022 will be adjusted to that.

Also if the Sox decline, Paxton has his own option for 2023 for 4 million. Would he do that? Hard to say.

Yes. We paid Paxton $6M for this year, but since he makes a min $4M in the option, it counted as $10M for 2022. That means $4M does not count on the 2023 tax line budget. (If we give him the option- $2M of the $6M counts. If we don't give him $6M and he takes the $4M player option, he counts as zero on the tax budget.

(That's how I see it.)

He’s contractually forbidden from biking with Chris Sale…

I'm an accountant, but I'm not ashamed to admit I can't figure out how some of these calculations work.

It is complicated, and I'm not sure I'm right, but basically, option years don't count as years but the buyout counts on the previous years.

Amazingly I've never encountered that acronym until now. It's a good one all right.

Public accountants in the US love it. It’s probably written into GAAP somewhere.
