Not sure you know how this whole “opinion” thing works.

That the 2019 Red Sox won 84 and had the highest payroll in team history at the time are not really matters of opinion. That the upper minors had little to no talent left in 2019 really isn’t either.

You’re sure about the fantasy world thingy?

Not quite sure what world you represent notin. Clear something up for me - What's liking the way Paxton is pitching and wanting to see more of it have anything to with 2019?

Deep breathing is good for one's soul opinions maybe not. I

You know what? You're right, deep breaths are good for ya. But the rest of the point stands

It sucks, but if the team looks out of it at the trade deadline, a guy like Paxton goes from being a player you like to watch, to a player you should trade to the highest bidder, because he won't be back next year and the rest of this year doesn't matter.

The Paxton discussion was on the Realistic thread…

The concept is pretty simple and has been used for decades.

And he certainly won’t be anywhere next year for what he cost this year. Bringing him back is no easy task…

Absolutely. And it's been in play too often for the Sox in the last decade for my taste.

A 2 year extension for $24 million, plus incentives for appearances, maybe a little injury clause tossed in, would probably do it. And I fully realize that's about as likely as Kike getting a Gold Glove this year.

That might do it, but not until 29 other teams have had the chance to do better…

No one said he willingly destroyed or dismantled the core of the factually winningest Sox team in franchise history. But for all we know, it is possible that his hiring was contingent on following orders to do something close: tearing it down, paring payroll, and building it back up with a more moderate budget -- all have been discussed on this forum since Bloom took over.

So for the robotic umpteenth time -- if Bloom has been operating according to ownership mandates, preferences, and modern trends (the Snoring Twenties) -- then he's doing a great job. And his badge as Chief Baseball Officer is not in any jeopardy of being pulled off his shirt and skipped across the Charles River.

I agree with this whole heartedly but i disagree that Bloom is safe. There’s more than one way to skin a cat, and if Henry decides to change direction Bloom is the perfect scape goat

And certainly an avenue Henry has chosen before.

I’ve been postulating that Bloom is safe if he is doing what Henry wants. But even that only applies for as long as Henry still wants it. He might change direction at any time, too.

But it’s also worth noting Cora is a pretty good scapegoat, too. For all the blame Bloom receives, he isn’t in the dugout and he isn’t running the game decisions…

IF and only if the Sox are sellers, Paxton may be the best chip.

If they want to buy and sell, I suppose hypothetically you could think Paxton buys you Assets and Sale/Houck come back for the playoffs

But if you actually had faith in Sale looking like he did when he comes back and playoffs see realistic, why would you not want Sale/Bello/Paxton leading your playoff team?

The only other chip IMO might be Duran (or Rafaela). The turnaround of Duran and the glove/promise of Rafaela have turned CF into a position with potential depth to deal from and IMO the Sox best trading chip to land effective SP.

I doubt this happens but the Sox could deal Duran and use Dunn as relief while they break in Rafaela…

I thought Ben was doing what JH wanted, too.

Bloom could offer it right now. Paxton still has 3 months in which to hit the IL again, after all.

Which is just more proof that we have no idea what JH is actually thinking.

That's a mixed animal metaphor, sir.

Not to mention, I’m no fan of the whole “more than one way to skin a cat” metaphor. I mean:

1. How many ways do we need? Or has anyone ever needed?

2. Why would anyone ever want to anyway?

Not to mention, the whole thing is a pretty disgusting result that even dog people would find revolting…

Dennis Miller used this in one of his bits: "what is that one way?"

Simple and effective. Dennis was good that way…

I think it would be bad optics to hold on to Paxton after letting Eovaldi and Wacha walk. Although we really don’t know what the offer was to Eovaldi..

I think Ben had a better foundation to work with and the Pablo, HRam and Rusney signings were too much to stomach.

I don’t think Yoshida and Story look as bad as those three.

If Paxton is traded, which I guess is likely, assuming he continues to pitch like he has been, wouldn't that kind of indicate that this season is basically over for us? Do you think that the return gotten from him would give us anything that might come close with respect to the value of a top of the line starter. I don't - I guess that is why I think that it would be silly to trade him. I'm not quite ready to give up on this season.

We could have paid down almost all of the salaries of those FAs to be, reset and gotten nice returns.

I think they'll wait a few more weeks to make the call. Our chances aren't great but we're not completely out of it.

In the 20/20 hindsight game, it was a big mistake to go over the tax threshold in the first place last year.

Attempts may have been made to do so. Only Bogaerts was reportedly told he wouldn’t be dealt, but I bet in the right deal, he would have…

Some feel in foresight, too.
