Of course it was worth countering. If X has a price that would keep him in Boston, why would he NOT let Boston know? Making them play his guessing game doesn’t make him sound very serious…

I disagree that it was worth countering, and I disagree Bogey is playing any guessing games. The offer doesn’t make the Red Sox sound very serious, and that I agree. If the Red Sox make a serious offer, and then it would be Bogey’s turn to either accept, or make a counter offer, but not until then. For once Moon, and I agree.

Neither side chooses to play the Cashman game and go public... except for the side strategically "leaking" info to Heyman, of course.

As for whatever offer the Sox made that so discouraged Bogaerts the day before the season, does anyone think for a second that our ivy-league front office doesn't anticipate every possible outcome of their very deliberate decisions in advance?

There's no chance it was spontaneous at the last minute, like Ah, offer him 30 for another year -- what's the worst that can happen: a flock of lame ducks apathetic about winning for a lost cause... banging the doldrums slowly?

Does anyone doubt that Bogie's gloom suddenly makes it likely he'll accept a midseason trade to a more "respectful" club that shows it really wants him?

John Henry is Ivy League? I didn’t know that.

Ok if you don’t think the Sox sound serious. But what has Bogaerts done to tell you he is? Negotiations are not a one-sided affair…

I don’t go into it that deep. I’ll leave that up to you to over analyze the whole thing.

Right. You’ve already written this whole narrative about how Bogaerts felt disrespected and didn’t even see the point in making a counteroffer, but really, really wants Boston as his top choice, but the Evil Management won’t let it happen…

Not a narrative, and just an opinion that you have a hard time accepting. Evil management? You make things up as you go along on your lonesome road. Can I get a hell yea?

And what I said is just my opinion. Aren’t others allowed them?

I never had a problem with yours, but you can’t say the same about mine, which wasn’t the only one like it on here.

Regrettably, I would like to insert a spurious comment on, of all things, the bullpen.

Today's game suggests another value for Whitlock's long-relieving. It's like a day off for the rest of the bullpen although today Strahm did also go an inning.

The early returns on the Sox bullpen are definitely an overall positive…

I thought Houck was going to go 6 today, but didn’t quite make it. Good point about Whit giving the pen for the most part the day off. The only problem with Whit going long is that the Sox don’t have a reliable closer at the moment that could be a problem going forward.

Aren’t we closer by committee this year?

John Henry is Ivy League? I didn’t know that.

John W. Henry reportedly attended a community college and then took classes at three University of California campuses -- Riverside, Irvine and Los Angeles -- where he majored in philosophy but did not graduate.

Chaim Bloom holds a bachelor's degree in Latin classics from Yale.

Latin classics is a requirement for building a farm system.

We speak of 'serious' offer but no one knows what that is......I don't care what other shortstops received.

If offered amount is correct, then Sox simply doesn't value Xander as much as many fans do.

No freaking way I give Xander $30M for say 6 more years. TV ratings only go down if Sox becomes non competitive. With a payroll of $230M, I doubt we become the Orioles. We'd have the dumbest front office in that's the case.

How many of you are going to quit watching the Sox if he goes elsewhere? That's the real question.

Are you now going to become a Dodgers fan?

I have two options. Watch the Sox or don't watch the Sox. I don't care to watch another baseball team. As long as there's a hope of the team being competitive, I'll watch them.

Who are all these teams lining up to offer bogey 30 million a year? Houston? New York?

Why $30M?

$24M will beat the Sox offer.

In incremental terms, all they offered was 1 year @ $30 mill.

And the overall value of the contract is less than what Story received. I'm sure that didn't sit well with Bogaerts.

I think Bloom values defense more than most fans do, and I also think many Sox fans overvalue Bogey's "steady D."

I really think that is why Story got this offer, and Bogey got that offer. I honestly think Bloom will not raise his offer to meet, let alone exceed, Story's deal.

The same ones who were all over Correa for even less?

I agree that Bloom probably values defense more than many fans do. I'm still not convinced that the offer was accurate, but maybe. Regardless of Bogey's poor defense, I think the offer, if true, is a slap in the face.

I am wondering what impact, if any, Bogey's seeming unwillingness to move off of SS has on negotiations with him. In an interview before Story was signed, when asked about the possibility of changing positions, Bogey's response was "I'm a shortstop", when it should have been "I'll do whatever the team needs me to do."

Agreed. But do you think Bogey was reciting a rehearsed line fed by Boras, reminding that his biggest market value will always be as a shortstop?
