Some of these guys at the bottom, as you know, were above-average defenders, so may not deserve to be on a thread of "worst" players. Griffin, Pena, and Burleson won Gold Gloves in Boston, where the Rooster also was a three-time All-Star who received MVP votes in four seasons. Barrett is overlooked now, but was one of the leaders on the field for the '86 AL champs, and hit 24-for-60 in that postseason.

Maybe they weren't great, but they also weren't Gorkys Hernandez or Chris Owings...

I agree about Pena, Barrett and Burleson. With some of these guys you have to look at WRC+. For Remy, the majority of his years in Boston were above 80 WRC+ with decent defense.

Plus his heroics in the 1978 playoff game (sigh).

Plus, back then, 2Bmen and SSs often had low OPS. Burleson's .688 was probably about average for SSs in that era.

One Boston sportswriter said Buddin's nickname was E-6.

One wag said he thought his name was Elmer Buddin because every time he looked, it said E- Buddin..

Interestingly enough, Fangraphs list the worst season by any full time Red Sox player since 1930 as Troy O’Leary with -1.3 fWAR in 1996. Pablo Sandoval (2015) and Glenn Hoffman (1982) come in right behind him with -1.2 fWAR…

Doug Griffin looked like the heir apparent to follow Mike Andrews for us at second base. His injury spoiled what possibly could have been a very good career.

...and one more thing - no list like this is complete without taking a look at Felix Mantilla or maybe even my much respected Chuck Schilling.

Frankly it's incredible how putrid Sandoval was in a Red Sox uniform.

Mark Lemke was pretty bad, but Craig Grebeck was the worst of all time.

Grebeck definitely is in the discussion.

All things considered, I'll go with Pablo. On a 5 year contract for 95 million, he failed to give us even one season that wasn't below replacement level.

It ended up being a terrible contract. Going into it, it shouldn't have been nearly as bad as it ended up being.

oh what hands he had! lol

I clearly remember Buddin letting balls hit right at him through between his legs. I think he was the worst shortstop that I have ever seen.

The worst player isn't the same as the worst contract.

I think he fits into a lot of Worst categories for Boston. Including “worst player to invite over to dinner.”

Yes, that stuff never gets old to me…

IDK, I think I'd rather have Pablo over for dinner than Sale. Pablo would eat a lot, but Sale would just pick at his food.

Only because he would tear a ligament in his elbow trying to cut the entree…

I think Pablo would just be a better hang too.
